Try Aqua World. Our first trip to Canun last year was my husband's first dive. He had a great time. This year when we went back to Cancun my son went along and they went to Aqua World for his first dive too. We stayed at the Sun Palace and booked the dive there. The guys did a practice dive in the dive tank the day before there at the hotel and then went to Aqua World the next day for the actual dive. They both had a great time.
If he just wants to try it he should do a Discover Scuba Course with any of the reputable dive shops close to where you are staying. Are you actually in Cancun or in a resort on the Riviera Maya? If he wants to be certified then he can do the 3-4 day course or do half the course at home and then do only the dive section here. Lots of choices and it is something he should talk directly to the dive shop about, a search on www.padi.com will bring up PADI certified resorts in the region
You coudl try a company like Aquaworld but they are very BIG - and use what we call cattle boats - you may prefer a smaller operator........
Personally, I wouldn't use Aqua World as a newbie or experienced diver. Scuba Cancun the same sentiments. I agree with Morales, use the smaller dive ops. They all have a beginner scuba course. My personal recommendation is Manta Divers, run by an American couple. Their discover scuba course is $80 and once completed you can do additional dives during your stay in Cancun for just the price of the dive.
We got back from Cancun yesterday and my boyfriend went Scuba Diving with Aqua World. He'd never done it before, and ended up doing it three times coz he loved it so much. If you do it with Aqua World, in some hotels you can do your taster lesson in the pool of your hotel.
divegirl is a diver, I run a dive resort, trust us.
I'm a certified diver and will be in Cancun in June. Does Manta World offer dive packages? I got the price list from Aquaworld, and it seemed pretty reasonable. What are your recommendations? I will be staying at Caribbean Village, which I think has a shuttle to Aquaworld, will not have a car... Do other dive operators provide equipment as part of the price, as I don't have my own BCD, regulator, just mask, snorkel, fins. Will I need my shortie wetsuit?
Another diver here........go with Dive Gal and DivePuerto's
recommendations. Over the years, I've done AquaWorld on
only one of many, many dive trips. The AquaWorld folks do a
a nice job for the tourist "cattle call" experience and have a
a good retail (but pricey) dive shop. However, there's a
myriad of wonderful dive operations on all the Isla's that will
cater a much more personalized experience and better
diving vacation. As for newbies and novice divers, these
folks need experienced guides, very small groups and
personalized service more than anyone for SAFETY sake
alone. Diving, IMHO, is one of the most fantastic experiences
a person can be involved in but with that comes a real and
present danger that requires that safety be paramount in all
situations. It is not something to do without researching
considerably, one's health, conditions, swimming ability,
physical conditioning, quality of dive operation, equipment
weather and water, especially, the water and location.
I've dove with Aquaworld before and never had any problems. To me they are the superior marina in Cancun. I guess it's just a matter of opinion which is the best.
