 How to prevent Montezuma's Revenge?

I know the basics: don't drink the water, etc. But I'd love to hear everyone's input on what they do to avoid getting sick while in Cancun.

If you get it you can also take Lomotil in moderate doses but watch your drinking while taking it. The farmacias have it readily available for approx $7 US. Take too much and you will have the opposite problem however. Learned this trick from my friend's mom who was instructed by her doctor prior to her trip to Mexico many years ago. Had the Monte twice prior in CUN and this did help quite a bit. Sometimes you can try your hardest to avoid getting it but when it's gonna happen, it's gonna happen. No sense worrying about it. Just be as cautious as you can. Never had problems in Mexico like in DR though. I think the DR needs a lesson on cleanliness and sanitization.

What works for us? Chew up one Pepto Bismol tablet after each meal while in Mexico and for a couple of days after your return. Cheap, simple and effective.

Just got back from Cancun and stayed at the Gran Melia. Did not get sick. I did not do anything out of the ordinary besides use bottled water to brush my teeth and never drink plain tap water. Most larger hotels have purified water but I just did that as a precaution. I ate everything as I normally would and came back perfectly fine. As long as you are in the Hotel zone, I wouldn't be too concerned.

For those of you who must have ice cold beverages like me -but are leary of the ice cubes - here's a tip that works with any drink that comes in an aluminum can - take the can (prior to opening) and roll or spin it in a bucket of ice cubes for about 1 minute - pop open and presto your drink will be ice cold! works every time as if though you had been chilling it for hours.

I agree with Nancy...been to Mx many times and use the Pepto Bismol tablet before every meal...sometimes after. We've been told by doctors several times that Pepto Bismol is actual better to take than immodium if there is no diarrhea. It will actually help fight the bacteria more effectively. Just our two cents...

I just got back - 1st trip

I didn't eat yogurt, I did brush my teeth with a drink their water.. No problems!

I even ate fruit and we ate tacos from a road side local taco stand..the whole family is fine

From what I understand, Cancun has changed/improved their water purification over the years...it doesn't have those same problems it once was famous for..

as another post stated...don't over do the sunning, eating, or drinking and you will be fine!

water purification systems in the hotels are only as good as their upkeep, for that reason I always recommend not drinking water from the tap and using bottled for brushing teeth, (better to be safe than sorry!)

Drink plenty of bottled water, most people get sick from dehydration rather than from food.

Remember what Mom always says, "wash your hands" :)

I always carry antibacterial wipes or that gel if ther's no place to wash hands.

Another tip I learned along time ago was to use that lime, you know the one that comes on just about every plate of food you order, squeeze a little lime juice on your food or in your beer, they say it keeps the bad germs away. I don't know, but I rarely get sick and I like the flavor :)

What re your thoughts on eating raw fruits and veggies? They are grown in the "unfiltered water" so do you think they also pose a substantial risk?
