Personally, I got sick eating scrambled eggs in the morning for breakfast. It was horrible! It wasn't just the "revenge" that was nasty, it was the painful cramping. I thought it was the ice in the drink they gave us when we first arrived, so I avoided it the next day, but I still ate the eggs, and I still got sick. When I went to the market, I noticed that the eggs were kept OUTSIDE the refrigerator! That made me realize that it wasn't the ice after all, it was the eggs. So, I stuck with plain toast in the morning, drank my margaritas at night, and was fine. The very last day, I said what the heck, and had a full breakfast again, instead of plain toast, and by the time I returned back to the U.S. I had a bad case of cramping and montezuma's revenge yet again.
So, next time I go, I will refrain from having eggs for breakfast. The water did not bother me at all, nor did the ice.
You can get antibiotics right there in Mexico. You don't need a prescription for it. You just go to the drug pharmacy (or wherever) and ask for it.
I always eat and drink what I want and no problems.
I did get sick after coming home and still am. not sure why. I had a test and everything was normal. we got home March 22 and today is april 29th.
Number one thing not to eat, is the SALSA that is sitting out on the tables, or on the bars, Watch when you travel around with the Fruit platters,,,,, MMM do they wash those cantalopes? (were have a recal on them here in NY today) GEE to they wash those lemmons or limes they push down into those beers? MMM what about there hands while prepping those fruits.........
One thing for sure, If you do get the poops, Go scuba diving and do a 60 foot dive, the poops will be gone and the rest of your vaction will be great! and you will remember the dive for the rest of your life! (and NO you don't poop in the water) it just compresses your inners........ Worked for me!
Wssh those hands especially after Holding on while traveling on the bus or in the taxi.
now a day's you can't sanatize to much!
I second the advice on the acidophilus. I have a very sensitive stomach that seemed to get upset even when travelling in the US (probably from indulging more than I do at home in both food and drink versus catching a bug), but I started taking a supplement before my trip and didn't have a single problem. I'm guessing it probably wouldn't help if you were actually exposed to something. A friend took a "preventative Pepto" every morning and ended up a little, uh, backed up, so I guess you just have to know your own system. I'd ask your doctor to get the best advice.
In my younger days when I was working in the Northwest Territories the Indians used to say to eat two pounds of cheese.
I have acid reflux, and take prescription meds for this. My husband and I have been to the riviera Maya 3x and the Dominican 2x. I find I seem to get ill more often than the husband, even though we eat and drink basically the same things. I have read that the meds for acid reflux may make some of us more vulnerable to stomach problems-kinda makes sense since your stomach acid naturally kills lots of nasty stuff you ingest. I now take the acidopilous a few weeks before we leave, and always bring pepto and immodium, as well as Cipro. I have only needed the Cipro once-but I would have been totally miserable without it. Better to have and not need than need and not have! Also-if you are from the US-buddy up to one of your lovely Canadian neighbors! My husband thought he was dying during a trip to the DR until a wonderful Canadian nurse shared her Gravol with him. Too bad we can't get that here!
