Cancun indeed used to be on the cruise ship schedule. Back in 1996, or so, I took a Norwegian Cruise Line cruise and Cancun was one of the stops. I believe it was shortly after that when ships stopped going there.
Cancun has never had a pier for cruise ships because it is not a deep water location. Some cruises used to list Cancun and take you there from elsewhere.
Robert is exactly correct, Cancun never ever had a cruise ship there. There is no deep water dock and never has been. I hear rumours they are building one near by, but the closest the ships ever docked to Cancun was over 60 miles away to the south. They may have listed it as Cancun but you sure as heck were not in cancun
In the past from my understanding, cruise ships that did visit Cancun, dropped anchor well offshore, and used tenders to bring passengers in at the dock at Playa Tortugas, where the old Fat Tuesdays use to be.
Dangers is correct. We docked just off of the shore and were tendered in. Definately not 60 miles away.
Steve, you are misinformed. Without a doubt, we stopped at Cancun. We tendered in to the dock at Fat Tuesdays.
this one might help you.

The OP mentioned Port and not anchored, that is a horse of a different color as an ex navy man port is tied to a dock or A place on a waterway with facilities for loading and unloading ships
