just courious about timeshare people in cancun

Hi,

I am going to Cancun next month for the first time. I just wonder why there is many advise posted here regarding to avoid timeshare people at the airport.

1) What is so bad about those time share people

2) What can I do to get out.

I want to know it upfront in case I accidentally get involve with them. Since this is my first trip, we may need help to find the right airport shuttle to my hotel as well as the help for other direction as needed

3) this questions is out of this topic. Is there any laundry mat in the hotel zone? I may need to do laundry during my trip. Thanks.

uop

As far as getting away from the timeshare sales people in the airport, just keep walking until you get outside. Your transport will be there, or one of the other transport companies will help direct you. The thing that is so bad about them in the airport is they will lie to you. They will ask about your transport and say they will take you to them. Instead they take you to their desk and try to get you to leave a deposit to go to their presentation the next day.

I am currently in Cancun and talked to a couple last night that were told the company in question was for the Sun Palace (Where they were staying.) The couple gave the guy a $80 deposit. He even wrote Sun Palace on the form along with a list of things they would receive. When they arrived at Sun Palace they were told this was not Palace Resorts that had solicited them in the airport. When they turned the paper over, it had the name of the actual company.

Hi uop...as Penny said, after your luggage has cleared and you are heading for the outside where the transport companies are waiting, just keep walking. Someone may come up to you and offer to carry your luggage...just say "no gracias" and keep walking. You may have to say "no gracias" more than once...they can be quite aggressive. Don't let anybody help with your luggage until you get outdoors and you find your transport company.

I think I remember from a previous posting that you are staying at the Riu Palace or Riu Cancun. Many hotels have timeshare people in the hotel trying to get you to go on tours of their hotels...this doesn't happen at the Riu's.

There is a laundry across the street on the lagoon side and down a ways toward downtown Cancun (away from the airport). A previous poster stated that it is across the street from the Presidente Hotel, approx km 7.5 (Riu Cancun and Riu Palace are at km 8.5 approx) I'm sure you could ask at the Riu desk and they will point you in the right direction.

JUST KEEP WALKING! We have been through this so many times, they will look like they are their for YOU but it really is a cruel scam to try to sell you a timeshare. Don't look their direction or they will trap you! LMAO

Agree to just keep walking, though disagree about saying 'no gracias'; from experience not just with this but other people eg shopkeepers etc trying to badger you (try visiting Turkey and Egypt for hassle!), I find it's best to look straight ahead and avoid making interacting in any way, whether through eye-contact or a polite 'no thank you': this delivers the message loud and clear.

I often feign deep conversation with my partner and pretend I haven't heard.

I can be quite aggressive though and some prefer the more polite approach, so whatever works for you but DO NOT engage in conversation of any kind with them. Once out of the airport, you'll see the reps so head straight for them.

We just got back from Cancun last week. At the airport we ended up talking to the time share people. They were from Cancun Palace. For a $50 deposit they offered to provide a free taxi ride from and back to the hotel we were staying at to Cancun Palace on the day of the Time share presentation. In addition for attending the presentation we got a good Buffet Breakfast for the family ( four of us) and 8 tickets ( 2 for each member of the family We could choose two activities from Chichen Itza tour, Tulum and XpulHa tour, All Inclusive day at the palace Resort, Zipline tour Isla Mujeres tour and couple of other activites. We ended up taking the Chichen Itza tour and Tulum / XpulHa tour. The presentation itself was about 1 1/2 hours including the breakfast time and there was no pressure whatsoever to buy. So we gave up about 1 1/2 hours of our vacation and for $50 got to see Chichen Itza and Tulum for the whole family and spent an afternoon at XpulHa an all inclusive resort. And By the way when they asked for a $50 deposit at the airport we told them we were not going to give a deposit and after a bit of hesitation we were given a voucher to just show up for the presentation - so we did not take on any risk. One last thing - in addition to these gift you have an option of buying other tickets at a discounted price. We ended up buying Xcaret tickets for $69.50 for adults and $34.50 for children -this is not all inclusive and this is the ticket price at the entrance gate but the price we got included transportation. If you buy the same package the cheapest we found was $89 per head at Cancun discounts.com.

Anyway hope this helps. It worked out really well for our family.

Once you get your luggage hold tight, walk fast, don't talk to anyone and don't make eye contact! You may feel rude, but it's better than getting someone reeled in. You're pretty much safe once you're OUTSIDE. Then look for a sign for whoever your transfer/travel company is.
