I have not tried to walk the beach for any distance...just between the Riu Palace and Riu Cancun. A previous poster stated that they walk one hour on the beach from the Riu Palace towards the Riu Caribe. Other posters have stated that the beach is rocky in some areas and you must climb over rocks at some point. The beaches change all the time due to weather conditions...I think it's hard to predict what it will be like when you go.
Before last September, I was able to walk over to Riu Cancun on the beach. When we were there last September, the outer bands of wind from Hurricane Ike passed thru and washed away part of the beach between the Riu Cancun and Riu Palace, bringing the water up to a retaining wall of Riu Palace. From recent pictures that I've seen, it looks like maybe that has resolved.
I think there are areas on the long part of the 7 (the Riu's are at the top of the 7) where you can walk for a distance...hopefully someone else will post those areas for you.
When staying at the RPLA last year we were able to walk to the Caribe via the beach. It is quite a walk with some rocky, but accessible as long as done safely, parts. It took us just over an hour. It was really nice to have a good nose at all the other hotels etc along the way. Amazing also how different the hotel beaches are from the public beaches. I would definitely recommend getting a taxi back. We would stay at the Caribe for a few hours and have lunch before getting a taxi back.
