Grand Caribe Real Dec. 15, 2005

Just drove by and the demolition on the front part, the new consturction by the beach and the complete overhaul of the entrance area is in full swing and a huge banner outside says "We are remodeling...Opening December 23."

Hey jimincancun,

Are you speaking of the hotel that is next to the Flamingo and houses the Tony Roma restaurant?

That's the one. Used to be the Continental Villas Plaza.

Hi Jim,

How much constuction is going on there? We are thinking of staying there on Dec.30-Jan 2. Do you think it will be too much constuction to enjoy oneself. Also, I have called and asked about the beach reconstruction. They have told me that it has been in progress and it is going well - they have usable beach. Do you know if this is true? We have a couple of other resorts in mind the RIU's or possibly Blue Bay Getaway. Any recommendations. Thanks so much for all the info that you put out.

The construction is extensive. I have 3 pics of the street side of the hotel taken last week. We have friends who were planning to stay there Jan 15 for a week. Based on what we saw, we recommended that they change hotels. I will send you the photos if you send me your e-mail address.

I think I would agree with Kansascitykid that there is a lot of consturction going on there--it is a beehive of activity. Perhaps the Riu Cancun or Palace Las Americas might be better and, no, I can't confirm that they have a usable beach. They have had the dredgers there for 2 weeks but the waves have been to much for them to use them much.

Hey Gymgirl,

Check out my review of Golden Crown Paradise Spa. It is open, all inclusive, adults only and an awesome place. Also completely operational with only very minor repairs continuing. You will see in the pics. They DO have beach and you are guaranteed to have a blast.

Thanks guys for your input. Does the GCP have an outside hot tub? Saw some good rates for that hotel. How are the beaches at RIU Cancun and the RIU Caribe. I'm really needing a break - just shoveled for 2 hrs. We have 10 inches of fresh snow here on the ground and more is coming!

We have switched to the Gran Caribe from our original hotel and really don't want to go through the process of switching hotels again. We are travelling Jan. 22-27, think things will be any better by then?

We too will be at the Gran Caribe. A group of ten Jan. 10th thru the 24th. Wespoke to the hotel directly and were told they would be open and everything fine, hope so as we don't want to change hotels either. Vacationhelp perhaps we'll run into each other as we'll still be there when you arrive. Look forward to seeing fellow midwesterners. Please post if you hear anything else, as we'll do the same.

Thanks jimincancun guy and to all that posted a reply for the original question.

Three friends and I are planning a trip to the Gran Caribe on March 3rd. Two of us have stayed there on three different occasions and have totally enjoyed our week of vacation.

I am concerned about the pool. jimincancun guy have you seen the pool and if you are about your travels, could you take other pictures of the hotel if permitted. I love the small restaurant they have next to the beach (basically under the pool). They serve a tasty steak and the lunches are worthy of a aftenoon nap.

If you could post any pictures that might be helpful to those of us that could use a solid visual of this hotel, you'd be lionized!
