Which tour would you recommend....Xcaret or Tulum/Xel-ha

As a frequent visitor to cancun I can't believe I can't make up my mind!!! But both look incredible, which one would you guys recommend? And does anyone know how much the Sea Trek and the swimming with the dolphins is at Xcaret?

We are a group of 4 that are going, all mid 20's. Looking for a fun full day tour with a little culture and sightseeing. Which both these tours offer, so we are in a bind in which one to do.

Hey PH. I was in much the same boat as you. Although we've been to Cancun a couple times before, we've never done the tours. This time we were trying to decide between the exact same ones as you. We finally chose Xcaret with a side trip to Chichen Itza on a separate day. We too will most likely be swimming with the dolphins at Xcaret.

After much much research, one of the best deals we found was through entertainment plus. They cover not only the private and public tours to Xcaret, but have the cost of the swim as well. Look under "public tours" to see what I mean.

I've been to both and they are both excellent. Xel-Ha is very water based and great for snorkelling and fun water activities. Xcaret has a lot more to it besides water and they do a terrific night show which is a must. When I can get to Cancun again I will certainly do both again!

I would like to make a recommendation. First, either way, Xcaret and Xel-Ha are fantastic eco parks. Xcaret is the more developed of the two and larger with more to do. Xel-Ha is the park I like better because it is smaller, more relaxing and they offer an All Inclusive meal plan. My recommendation is that instead of taking up valuable time to swim with dolphins at one of the eco parks, do the Dolphin Discovery program on Isla Mujeres. This way you get to spend the rest of your day on Isla after enjoying one of the best dolphin swim programs around.

I totally agree with 1212eric. His suggestions are the the best. You should plan to go to Tulum and Xel-Ha (AI) for one day, then take the ferry to Isla Mujeres for the swim with the dolphins. You will see so much more and have a better time taking in the dolphins at the Isla Mujeres, plus you will be able to run around the Isla and have lunch, etc.

CCC,

This is sooo funny, we have also planned a trip to the Mayan ruins in our next stay to Cancun.

Eric,

I do agree about dolphin discovery being the best I had a blast going through them last time. But this time I have the meet-up I planned going on so there isn't going to be time to take 3 day trips. So I figured the Cancun newbies that are coming with me could swim with the dolphins in the day trip to either Xcaret or Tulum/Xel-ha.

Anyone else with recommendations?

powerhitter - although I prefer Xcaret to Xel ha, I think Tulum combined with Xel ha is a good option for you. If some of your party have not yet been to Cancun, showing them some sort of ruins is a great idea. Tulum is nice and a good experience. Xel ha is great afterward to swim and get cooled off.

If I am choosing just between the 2 parks I like Xcaret because there are more things to do than just swim, but they are both fantastic.

Sorry, I don't swim with dolphins so I don't know much about that at either place. I'm sure someone will know.

I did the Sea trek at Xcaret and it was a lot of fun they only had little fish in the area. I can not remember what it cost I went in 2003. At Xel-ha the Sea trek looked to be better a lot of big fish swimming around in the area you go in at. If you go to Xcaret I would stay for the night show it is one of the best shows I have seen. We went on the Tulum/Xel-ha trip and it has nice but did not give you a lot of time at Xel-ha they offered us to skip Tulum and do a full day at Xel-ha. I want to go back to Xel-ha for the full day it is a great water park

and do the Sea trek there. At Xel-ha you have a lot of different choices of snorkling spots in the park. Both Park are great just offer different things to do. Jim

Took my kids on both tours last week. You can get both of them as all inclusive tours which means that snorkel gear and a meal are included in your purchase price. It works out cheaper than paying for those things at the park. You are required to leave a deposit of some sort ( drivers license, hotel key or cash I think to get your snorkel gear at Xcaret, Xel Ha was cash only for deposit for the snorkel gear). The meal at both parks was surpisingly good ( better than anything we had at the resort we stayed at in Cancun). Xcaret is great for the variety of things to do there. It's kind of a water park, zoo, theater rolled in to one. My one complaint about the place is that it must have been laid out by someone after a little too much tequila paths winding every which way, hence a lot of walking. Xel Ha is much smaller, snorkeling is the main thing there. Again remember to bring cash for deposits $10 per head I think. The tour of Tulum is after the stop at Xel Ha. You are at Tulum for a couple of hours, which was plenty for my son. At Tulum you are allowed to bring in your camera but they want you to pay extra to bring in a camcorder. Both Xcaret and Xel Ha require your suntan lotion to be biodegradeable. They will take away any other type of lotion. The tour to Xcaret is a much longer day if you stay for the show, a must in my opinion. Last week was my second time to both of the parks, first time for my kids when I asked them later which they liked better they could'nt decide, they had a great time at both.
