The property is quite beautiful. I thought the landscaping was nice. There is, however, a lot of cement with many lounge chairs. This is necessary because there is practically no beach on the east facing side of the island. The beach is hard to walk because it is very narrow and steeply angled towards the water. We knew this going in, as we have been to Cancun numerous times. We had a room in Building 4, third floor. The room is nice; it's small but has a comfy bed, kitchenette, washer/dryer, and a small balcony. The bathroom had a shower with separate tub; it was nice but like others, we did have some minor flooding from the shower. Easily fixed by a towel. Our view was slightly obstructed as the room was adjacent to the next building. It overlooked the pool and sea, but we could not see "beach". This may be because the floor we were on was too low, or just because there isn't much of a beach. We were disappointed that you couldn't hear the sea and waves from the hotel area (pool or our room balcony). There are fountains that are turned on 24 hours a day which drown out the sounds of the sea. The pool was great; we did not find it cold. It's very large and beautiful. The pool bar was also great.
Service was 3 star. Housekeeping does show up every day for renters vs. vacation property owners. For us, this was around 5 pm, which was the end of our beach day, so we did not use housekeeping services. Two restaurants were available - by the pool and the main one. We did not eat there. We tried to order room service several times, but nobody answered. We tried for 30 minutes without success. We had trouble exchanging money at the hotel. They did not have enough pesos for $100 usd. We got a handful of change, a stack of very small bills, and "we owe you 2 pesos". There were very few people at the hotel, and in Cancun in general. Like another reviewer, we tried to upgrade our room but were told no rooms were available. I prefer honesty, and that was clearly a lie. The staff was friendly but not very helpful. I will temper this by saying that we typically stay at the Fiesta Americana Grand Coral Beach when in Cancun, which is clearly a 5 star property. While we were not expecting 5 star services, we did have higher expectations than what we experienced. We checked out 4 days early to move to the Coral Beach. Upon checking out, we were a little surprised that the staff did not even ask why we were leaving early.
Overall, it's a nice property. Service could be better, but I think it is on target with the hotel rating. I prefer the north shore beaches; they are bigger, the sand is powdery white and soft, and there are gentle lapping waves. The east side (which the Westin Lagunamar faces) has coarse sand, steep slopes, and rough waves - which are fun for a while. If you love the Westin but want a nicer beach, take the bus to Playa Caracol or Playa Tortuga on the north side.
