We just returned from the Condessa on November 27, 2003. I must say the hotel is beautiful from the grounds to the rooms to the lobby to the beach to the pool. The service, while not overwhelming, was perfect for the family vacation. The hotel appears to be an older hotel but they are discretely updating the rooms. We looked at many of the hotels in the area and the Condessa was certainly one of the better looking resorts on the entire strip. Some of the hotels on the strip could have been in any city in the USA. We felt like the Condessa had a real tropical and Mexican feel. The Condessa does not feel like one of the huge resorts. Despite it's size it feels like a smaller hotel. The lobby and the restaurants are about as nice as any hotel on the strip.
The beach was beautiful. The pool was huge and the pool area was one of the most tropical of the 5 or 6 hotels we visited while we were there.
However, the pool is getting on in age and will require a major overhaul soon. We saw a pool guy taking measurments for an entire day.
Is there an overhaul ahead? They tried to cheaply fix the problems with the pool by putting a new substance over the old tile, but it is peeling away and won't last long. It did not deter us in the least from having all the fun we wanted. Most of the time the pool was emaculate.
But if I was going to make a reservation at the hotel in the future, I would make sure the pool was in good working condition and will be until my trip was complete. The rooms were great. We were in a part of the hotel that was just renovated and the room was really nice. The room was more than big enough for the 4 of us. We had a balcony and I highly recommend requesting one ahead of time through email. I also recommend an Oceanview room if possible. They are renovating rooms in all areas of the hotel, but again, it did not bother us in the least.
The food at the hotel was above average. Not too expensive during lunch. $6 to a high of $11 for lunch. Beware of the $3.20 sodas (no refills), a common theme throughout all of Cancun. We did not eat breakfast at the hotel because the Captains Cove, about a 1/4 of a mile down the street, had a great breakfast buffet for $8.95 and 1/2 price for kids. Speaking of the restaurants. We did not have an all inclusive package so we ate dinner at the local restaurants. Most of them were a huge ripoff. Go downtown for good deals on food and groceries.
(example, $4 for a bottle of water on the strip and .75 downtown) La Parilla and Pericos downtown were excellent restaurants. The prices at the touristy restaurants in Cancun (along the strip) were outrageous and the food was average. Except for La Fisheria. Excellent. Stay away from Lorenzillo's unless you have to have a lobster. We passed on the lobster and the food was mediocore and the meal was over $100. Just to let you know, I'm not afraid to spend money on a good meal. I just think you should get what you pay for and what you pay for at some of these restaurants is not worth it. Stay away from Pat O'Briens. This is coming from a person that has been going to the Pat O'Briens in New Orleans for 25 years and thinks it's the best bar in the world. They took something off my table and threw it in the garbage. When I told them that I needed it back they told me it was in the garbage if I needed it. They made me dig through their garbage even though they made the mistake. I was treated terribly there. Don't go no matter what.
Speaking of drinks, the drinks at the hotel were expensive. A rum punch was $9. All in all we loved the Condessa and will return if the pool is not being worked on when we want to go. We will go all inclusive the next time. Beware of the people selling timeshares. They are everywhere and a pain in the neck if you just want to relax like we wanted to do.
We were not in the hotel 5 minutes and we were sitting on a couch trapped. Many people told us they went on some of the timeshare trips and they were great. It's just not my cup of tea.
