It was incredibly hot when we landed in Cancun in September 2005, but the people at Dreams were immediately so helpful and friendly that it was easy to forget about the sweltering heat--especially when they greeted us with those cool mint towels.
Check-in was extremely quick and easy and we immediately got to check out the premises and enjoy all the fine food and drinks that Dream had to offer. There were amazing views from nearly all sides of the hotel, which was also a quick walk to many American chain restaurants, bars, flea markets, etc. Warning, the merchants were all quite aggressive and weren't afraid to call out to anybody who looked like a tourist.
The room was amazingly beautiful. We were on the fourth floor of the pyramid and our room included a huge king-size bed and a wonderful view of both the ocean and the lagoon/swimming pool area. The room was at a perfect temperature the entire stay (75 degrees!) and included anything we could have ever wanted--the mini fridge and bar, large towels, plentiful supply of toiletries, plenty of open space, great balcony, etc.
The food at both Seaside Grill and Oceana was amazing. I tried the mahi mahi, the grouper covered in cornflakes and coconut, the filet mignon, and the surf and turf meals and they were all cooked to near perfection. The chips, salsa, and guacamole were of course great. Himitsu was just average in terms of sushi and food but it did have a great darkly lit ambiance and wonderful service. All restaurants provided outstanding service and most guests seemed to leave behind tips to reward them. A photographer took pictures at dinner each night--and charged $25 for framed pictures and $10 for just the pictures.
Drinks were a little weak at the bars but that was fine by me since I'm not much of a drinker to begin with. The banana and strawberry dacquiries were quite good as well as the pina coladas. Coronas were everywhere and so were many kinds of top-shelf liquors.
On the negative side, I can't say our experience with room service was very good. We waited about an hour and fifteen minutes one morning when we ordered breakfast and it came very very cold and unpalatable. Another time we ordered dinner and it also took a while. There weren't as many food options so I definitely recommend catching your meals at the restaurants--I especially recommend getting the watermelon juice at the World Cafe for breakfast and also the coconut ice cream at any of the restaurants for lunch or dinner. It is definitely worth the trip to head downstairs and find the many alternatives to room service!
Another few negative things about Dreams... There were only two elevators and neither of them worked for much of the trip. They don't have sensors so they can rip an arm off if you're not careful! Also, the travel agents within the hotel charge up to two times what other travel merchants charged for day trips to the Mayan ruins. As long as you're careful and you shop around you should be fine. The good thing about Mexico is that everyone there is willing to bargain with you.
I would overall recommend Dreams for the food, the view, and the experience. Just be prepared for anything!
