“Royal Beach Club is the Way to Go @ the Westin”

Westin Resort & Spa Cancun

Mar 18, 2008

We stayed at the Westin 5 years ago for our Honeymoon & I must say we were very concerned before we left based on some of these reviews. (we stayed March 2 - 8 this year).

We booked our trip thru Orbitz & I must say we got a great deal. We upgraded to the Royal Beach Club so we could have a balcony overlooking the ocean.

Pro's:
The Royal Beach Club Ocean View. If you have the option get it. It is worth it the sound of the ocean is awesome.
The Happy Hour & Breakfast included is well worth it.
The Beach is secluded & Quiet (way better than the Main Building Pool area which is like Disney World with all the noise & chatter. 30 mins of free internet each day while we were there since we were in the royal beach club. RBC was very nice & quiet. Other than happy hour or breakfast you didn't run into too many people in the hallways. Very nice. The people that were staying there the same week were very nice (other than the group that had the loud kids & didn't discipline them)

Cons
We didn't get the king bed we were promised. They did offer us a King on the Lagoon side which was a joke. I paid for an ocean room & there was no way I was going to downgrade.
Rude & Loud children at Breakfast that almost made breakfast unbearable. Time share pressure. Not only did they ask us the second day we arrived. But we had a problem w/ our internet & they tried to get us again. What nerve. The noisy machine the grounds crew used to filter rocks out of the sand. Nothing like trying to relax next to the ocean & a loud squeaky sound coming from a machine as it is driven by your lounge chair. Seriously get some WD-40 for that thing or use it at 4pm when most people have left the beach for the day. The in room coffee maker is soo friggin small. It only makes one cup at a time. You would think they could get some 6 or 8 cup coffee makers for the high end Royal Beach Club. We had to go to the main building to use our free internet. It would be nice if they had a computer lab in the RBC

Some pointers. If you go to the Happy Hour tip the waiters a couple bucks. We tipped them every nite & we would walk in & we would have cold beers waiting for us at our table. Even if it was busy. Happy Hour get there early. We showed up around 5:15 & got plenty. If you show up at 6pm or later the food may be gone & they were slow to refill anything or put out clean plates.
The breakfast is a great deal. Scrambled Eggs, sausage, cereal, hashbrowns, toast, danishes, milk, OJ, apple juice. There was always plenty to eat for breakfast so no need to get there early.
Make sure you get plenty of $1's before you leave for mexico. I took $200 in $1's & it made for easy tipping (nobody in mexico has change) We tipped freely & it made for good service. The double red flags on the beach indicate there are rocks in the area. Nobody tells you this. I went out & was trying to swim & my feet were very sore from the rocks (some of which are huge). Only to surface & have the lifegaurd tell me I shouldn't be swimming there. You would think the front desk would mention it at check in.. but nope they sure dont

The bus is like 60 cents per person. If you need to go somewhere take the bus. I don't understand why people think they need to rent a car in Cancun. Why risk getting arrested when $2 will get you there & back?

The safe was nice & we didn't have them clean our room the entire time we were there? Do you change your sheets everyday? We figured why risk having them in our room.
We were disapointed that the RBC pool was not an infinnity pool. Not to mention the pool they do have is small & my big toe was cramped in the jacuzzi.
Just shop around if you are going to stay here. We talked to one couple that was staying there & they were paying $400+ per nite. We were paying a 1/4 of that.

Overall we were pleased with this hotel. It was pretty close to a perfect vacation. I would definitely go back in a heartbeat to the Royal Beach Club. Very nice. I think the people who have nit picked really were digging for issues. Most of my cons I wouldn't have mentioned but I just wanted to be up front about them. They really weren't that bad - well except for the unruly children. Just cause you are on vacation doesn't mean your children can scream like animals on the discovery channel without being talked to. The same group was breast feeding & changing diapers at the breakfast table. Honestly who changes a diaper at the breakfast table while you are breastfeed the kid? Yes the mother was breastfeeding the baby & changing the diaper at the same time. The guy brought them their ticket & didn't even say a word. YUCK!
Also the Westin is building a new hotel in the heart of the strip. It will be interesting to see how it turns out. It looks like it will be a "mega" resort like the hilton or other similar hotels.

This hotel was NOT up to our likings. We stayed in the Royal Beach Club Room and and it was not cleaned very well. Also, the maid left room after she was done and never shut our hotel door. We returned to the room hours later, likely we put our belongings in the safe.
Also, someone opened our hotel door in the middle of the night( 2 times) and one of the staff members claimed it was a mistake! Likely we had the sliding lock on our door so they were unable to enter our room.

I would not recommend this hotel to anyone. We are starwood members and we ended up switching hotels after two days of staying there to the Le Meridian. The Le Meridian treated us like royalty! That is the hotel to stay at!

We are a well-traveled family of four -- two teenagers (14 and 17) in tow. We booked through the JetBlue website and have never been to Cancun, although we have been to Cozumel.

We stayed in the Royal beach club, a separate building from the main hotel, over Presidents' week. Our room faced the lagoon and was large, clean and well-appointed. It has the Westin features including comfortable beds. The ac was not functioning (the unit circulated air but the compressor was clearly not working) when we arrived but as it was 1 AM when we settled in, so we waited until the next day to get it fixed. We also needed a rollaway and were charged more than expected per night. Those were the negatives and we could easily overlook them considering the way we were treated throughout our stay.

I showed my Starpoints card upon arrival and we were told they hotel would comp breakfast and the happy hour. There is no other place to eat nearby so we saved money and time with this deal.

I cannot vouch the rooms in the main part of the hotel which seemed to have been assigned to two different conferences that were held during our stay. Our room included an electronic safe, bathrobes, and plenty of towels for the four of us. It was large and there was a balconey with a table and two chairs.

There are a number of pools of the property both on the ocean side and the lagoon side. I walked quite a length of the beach and it appeared to me that the Westin beach was one of the nicest. It is wide and there are many chaises with umbrellas and other covers. Some early birds claimed seats but there were enough shaded spots to go around.

The breakfast and lunches were fine; it is a resort so the lunches we ate by the pool were not cheap. The selection of food at lunch was wide enough so my picky eaters always found something.

This is a relatively quiet place, closest to the airport except for Club Med. Groups did get some volley ball going but the well-known action is further on up, not here. Bus service is frequent and very cheap. If you any bit adventurous you can get around without renting a car or using taxis. My teens said they enjoyed the bus rides the best. One South American group of teens got on at one of the hotels and immediately began to entertain themselves by singing -- this is what my kids remember.

The hotel will suggest and book restaurants -- some have been mentioned in this thread. I would also suggest that you change some money into pesos before you get there so you can tip staff when you arrive. Cancun lives by tourism and good service should be rewarded.

My teens have both said they would go back to this hotel in a minute -- I would say that sums it up for us all.

We stayed at the Westin Cancun with our 3 children 5, 4 & 2 yrs old. We upgraded to the Royal Beach club rooms which included at breakfast buffet and happy hour with apps buffet in the evening. We found this great for those with kids because we did not need to wait for ordered food in the restaurants and the kids always got a good breakfast with lots of choices. Yes, the eggs could be a bit runny but they also served bagels, cereal, fruit, pancakes or french toast...lots of choices. The evening was hit or miss for the kids but no big deal it was nice to have the option. Our room was fine, we did not really spend time there except to sleep..no dresser for clothes, that was a little strange. The cleaners were sweet and our room was always clean no problems. The beach was clean and beautiful also 8 pools ot choose from. We never had a problem finding chairs. There are some children there but not so many that it is a crazy kid fest (even we do not care for that). The servers were fantastic, Marco was our breakfast server every morning and was so sweet, helpful and friendly. Bernardo and Juan were our servers on many occasions and were both terrific, friendly and very hardworking. The entire staff was hardworking and great. They never stop cleaning everything. I was so worried when I read the bad reviews..I had nothing to worry about. I understand that some times people will just have bad luck with a place, others are hotel snobs. The Ritz is right down the street if you want to pay the price. We were really happy with our vacation experience at the Westin.

Stayed 2/12-2/19 at Westin Cancun here are some pro and cons
PRO
Quiet beach with alot of chairs available and plenty of towels
Stayed in Nonsmoking (3rd and 4th are NS Floors) Room
Staff friendly and helpful, maidservice gave extra towels when asked

CONS
So far from town, cabs to restaurants nightly ran $25
Beach bar closed at 5:30 only lobby bar was open after that
Cokes $3.50, Drinks $7, Glass of OJ $5
Paid for ocean view room but they only have windows no balconies except for 6th floor which is smoking. Waste of money
Very windy this time of year all day long
Check your bill got phone charge and bellman bill added incorrectly

Cancun is like Miami beach, just as built up and expensive. Haven't been here in years and now there are 80+ hotels and 30000 rooms, the old charm is gone. Stay in Miami instead.
