“Club Med finally get with the times”

Club Med Cancun Yucatan

My family just returned from a week at this newly renovated Club Med.
The property was significantly damaged by a hurricane and recently re opened after extensive renovations. We were somewhat reluctant to return to Club Med after our experience at Club Med Ixtapa 12 years ago. We vowed at that time never to return....it was relatively expensive yet the accommodations were deplorable.

I noted an Ad in The Canadian Globe and Mail indicating that the rooms at Club Med Cancun were renovated and updated. I went online to
the Clubs website and was surprised to see that the rooms looked very
nice.

We decided to give Club Med another chance! My children aged 11 and 14 yrs had an awesome time. My wife and I were pleasantly surprised and had a wonderful week at this Club. The accommodations are bright,
modern and comfortable. The bathrooms are modern and no longer have that musty smell I remember from years previously. The bath and bed linens are a far cry from previous Club Med visits.......absolutely comfortable. Each room has a small sitting area as well as a balcony.
The rooms have flat panel TVs and a stocked fridge and a coffee/tea maker. Even room service is available.

The food is abundant and of high quality. There is always something to choose from. Staff are very friendly and helpful. The beach is the nicest in Cancun. It is sheltered from the large waves by a rocky prominentry and is always calm.

As you can see, I am impressed by the significant improvement in Club
Med and would return without hesitation.

So what's the downside? Unfortunately there is not enough shade on the beach or around the pool given the number of guests. I met people who woke up at 4.30 in the morning to place personal items on chairs for later that day! This is not what I would call a relaxing part of a vacation! Management are planning to erect more pallapas on the beach but until that happens I would avoid the Club during peak periods.

This place is top notch. We had a wonderful time...even with 3 children ages 7,5, and 18 mos. The babysitter, Ileana, took such great care of our youngest daughter. The other two kiddos loved the mini club med. especially Michael!! They really play alot with the kids...no just sitting around and watching them. The food was amazing...same place every night but never the same food. You could also sit in a variety of different rooms which made it feel like you were dining in a different place each night. The staff here was unbelievably friendly...I could never walk far without a friendly hello in English, Spanish, or French...primarily English. Stay here and you will not be disappointed...and you HAVE to try the flying trapeze at least once!

Just returned home yesterday from my first trip to Club Med, following a week of beautiful weather, delicious food, and a wonderful mixture of guests from other countries. The first thing that interested me in a vacation at Club Med was the “all-inclusive” deal. All of my food, drink (including alcohol), and activities were included, except for the body massage. I snorkeled over a reef, took really fun tennis lessons, and sat by the pool relaxing and working on my tan. I watched kids and adults alike learn how to swing on a trapeze; that was really cool. Although our kids are teenagers, the younger kids really enjoyed the kids club; best part was even though there were a lot of kids in the resort, it didn’t feel like it. It was quiet enough to read a book by the pool or at the adjacent beach and was enough activity to stay very active around the pool. Only problems I saw at the pool were the lounge chairs being “claimed” very early in the morning and not being used for hours at a time and when the wind did come in, the umbrellas sometimes fell over (a heavier base maybe?).

The food was very good; sadly I probably took an extra 5 pounds home with me…the chocolate banana bread and white chocolate bread were too good! The GOs (resort staff) were awesome. I enjoyed learning tennis in the morning with the tennis GOs and have lunch or cocktails with them in the evening. The GO concept is unique and really made a difference in my stay. They were always fun, bending over backwards to make my vacation phenomenal! I really can’t see myself going to a conventional resort again, especially with stuffy staffs.

I was told the resort was just rebuilt after hurricanes a couple years ago. My room was great, with a view of the lagoon; I hope I can get a sea view the next time I vacation there. A couple remarks: my room safe did not work (I saw new safes which appeared to be ready for installation); plenty of closet space; the beds were OK; very colorful rooms.

There were three restaurants, one of which was built over the ocean. This restaurant was very romantic and we really enjoyed the atmosphere as we watched the sunset over drinks, followed by a wonderful dining experience.

The best part of the vacation was not worrying about the kids having fun while we were enjoying reading or walking on the beach. The teens enjoyed the teen club which included basketball, sailing, kayaking, and dancing in the evening (while we were out socializing with other adults!) Club Med greatly exceeded my expectations and look forward to our next visit.

The only positives about Club Med Cancun is the beauty of the property, the food was pretty good and the daily cleaning from the maid service. The 20 million in renovations made the place look good, but they forgot about the details, including ones pertaining to their guests' comfort. You better hope that you have sunny, beautiful, dry days with a cool breeze. We had rainy weather the whole time and the walkways flooded. So, walking anywhere (even dinner) meant wearing flip flops to save ruining shoes (with pants rolled up) or barefoot with shoes in hand. The complimentary golf cart-like transport they offer around the Club was useless and we were told could not reach our room...but of course a pick up truck doing renovation construction could. My pillow case was stained and I waited to see if it would be replaced. It was...on the second to last night I was there (the only flaw I could find in the otherwise excellent cleaning staff). The air conditioner in our room was so loud and did not take any moisture out, so we just turned it off sometimes for some peace or to be able to sleep. Since the weather was wet and the a/c, did not take moisture out of the room (no matter how long we ran it), our clothes were damp the whole time...even the ones sitting in the suitcase or hanging in the closet. The room with the sink and shower has no ventilation (i.e., no fan or window). So again -moisture, moisture, moisture and of course, fogged up mirrors that had to be wiped down since they would not clear. The hall lights in our room went out twice and our toilet stopped up once in the course of seven nights. They fixed the issues on the same day when we called to tell them. If your next door neighbor is a loud talker, has children or has the TV on, then you will hear it through the shared wall. The hairdryer is one of those types that you have to hold the power switch down the whole time you use it to keep it on. So, if you have long hair like me, be prepared to be frustrated and have a sore thumb. If you are not just the right height, then you will not be able to see yourself in the mirror the Club provides at the outlet while you blow dry your hair. The hairdryer must be used in the main sleeping area, under the TV because there is no other outlet in the entire room to use it (i.e., in the room where the shower and large mirror are located). Therefore, if someone else wants to relax or watch TV while you blow dry your hair, good luck cause you're in the same room. If you are under 40 and single, do not come here. Most guests are families and middle aged couples. I enjoyed that the majority of the guests were French and French speaking, but that meant that English was sometimes the second language spoken for announcements or in common areas. If that bothers you, then you may not be comfortable here. Though the Club provided a daily list of activities, most are outdoors, so if it rains, there is not much to do at the Club - seek entertainment in Cancun proper or at the ruins. In one instance, they changed the planned evening activity, but we only found out because we overheard a guest saying so. There is no digital message board or anyone purposefully telling guests of changed plans. I wrote a letter to Club Med about the items above and our other poor experiences at the Club during our seven night stay and never received a response.

We are a family of 4 (2 girls ages 14 and 11) and stayed at club med from 3/11-3/25, 2007. We absolutely loved our vacation!!

Beach: amazing!!, there are several spots to chose from as the club is surrounded by water on three sides, it could use a little more shade... The beach is public so you see walkers and the occasional bather, but they do not use the chairs. Actually, you wouldn;t notice them at all unless you looked for them

food: delicious!! as good, if not better, than a 4 star restaurant.
something for everyone...we ate in the "reservationf" restaurant once, it was just ok.

room: typical club med, don't expec the Ritz and you won't be disappointed. Clean, amazingly comfortable beds, everything worked. Note: only in the concierge level (upgrade) will you have beer and soda in your room as another writer had.

Staff: friendly GO's, a great team!! local employees: very nice, smiled often. The GO's for the teen club were wonderful...keeping our girls enagaged in the activities and making their vacation as much fun as ours.

Beverages: this is the only negative: the wine was not the best, tasted more like poor sherry than wine. We bought wine only 3 times in 14 days because it was expensive ($50 for a $20 bottle)
bar drinks were weak, apparently their shot is a 1/2 shot or so a GO told us. We just asked for a double hot and the drink tasted more like what you would get sateside.

Safety: the club is located on the base of the strip, far away from the Cancun party action, so you don't have the spring break "problem". Guards are sprinkled throughout the club for our protection. The beach is a public beach but the guards insure that no one enters the club without permission. We did not worry about our kids safety and that is high on my priority list.

We would go back in a heartbeat. We have traveled a lot, stayed in many all inclusives..this one gets an A from all of us.
