My wife and I stayed at the Hilton Cancun in May of 2009. We enjoyed our stay very much. Here is a quick list of facts based on our stay:

1. BEACH: Yes there IS a beach, people who say there is no beach must have stayed at some other hotel or need a new pair of glasses. PLENTY of beach, NOT rocky like some other hotels. PLENTY of chairs and palapas by the beach.

2. POOLS: amazing pools! Wow! probably nicest set of pools I've seen at any hotel. There are also 2 large jacuzzis. Pools and jacuzzis open 24/7.

3. FOOD: we had the European plan (not all inclusive) and we found the prices of food/drinks to be really expensive. It wasn't just expensive compared to Mexican standards, it was expensive compared to US/Canadian standards. (ex: $8 a plate of nacho chips and guacamole). Can't say much for the restaurants since we ate out during the entire trip. They looked nice though, but be prepared to shell out lots of $ if you eat at the hotel. We bought breakfast / lunch food at the convenient store 5 minute walk down the street, we used the minibar fridge to keep our beer / food cold. As long as you put everything back in the fridge before you leave they won't charge you. The restaurants in the Zona Hotelera are pricey. They tend to be fancier upscale restaurants, but there are also some 'cheap' places in the Party Center. In any case, most of the food is American and over priced. If you want real authentic mexican food and don't want to pay ridiculous prices, take the bus to the town where you'll find plenty of really good restaurants at really good prices. Check out the area around the Mercado 28. And when I say "good prices" I mean less than $20 for 2 people with drinks included!

4. DRINKS: as mentioned above, drinks at the hotel are pricey, expect to pay anywhere between $5-8 per drink. On the other hand, a 6-pack of beer at the convenience store down the road is about $4. they also sell hard liquor at the convenience store for really cheap prices. And if you want to pay even less, take a short ride to the town (20 mins in the bus) and go to Walmart. $10 avg. for bottles of hard liquor, and $3-$5 for six packs of beer (same exact beer that is sold for $5 a can at the hotel bar or $8 can in your mini bar). We did one trip on our first day and stocked up for the rest of the trip. Saved a huge amount of money doing this.

5. TRANSPORTATION: Some people will complain that the hotel is far from "everything". If by "everything" they mean the insanely noisy Party District with nonstop loud music and annoying drunk tourists, than yeah, you could say its a good distance away (which in my opinion was a good thing!). In any case, there are busses passing in front of the hotels in cancun every 3 to 5 minutes 24 hours a day 7 days a week. Cost is 7.50 pesos (about 50 cents). You can get to the party district in about 15 minutes, and to the downtown area in about 25 minutes. Don't even bother with taxis, they are ridiculously expensive. EVERYONE takes the bus.

6. HOTEL: The hotel itself is very nice, spacious, clean, etc. The hotel grounds are well kept. No complaints whatsoever about this.

7. ROOM: the room we got was a "regular" room on the 7th floor with an ocean and pool view. There was nothing "regular" about the view. Wow! Amazing view from this "regular" room. The hotel is built in such a way that everyone has an ocean view, so don't pay more for an "ocean view room" since they ALL have ocean view. The Bed was unbelievably comfy, sheets were also clean and very comfy as well. Large HD flat screen TV with plenty of channels both in English and in Spanish (a few other languages too: French, Japanese, etc...). cleaning service was very good and discreet. I think we saw the cleaning lady only once but the room was always made upon our return. We did not feel any risk with our belongings, but use common sense and put jewelry, cash, wallets, cameras, and any other valuables in the free room safe.

8. RECOMMENDATIONS & MISC: Cancun has lots to offer, don't just sit at your hotel all week, what a waste of money & time! There are lots of things to see and visit. I would highly recommend one of the Catamaran tours tat go to Isla Mujeres. Open bar on board, lunch on Isla Mujeres. Isla Mujeres is a must see. You can save a good 40% if you go buy your ticket directly from the boat owners at the Embarcadero (docks) instead of through the hotel tour desk. In fact, don't bother buying ANYTHING from the hotel tour desk, they markup ALL prices by at least 40%. Another recommendation for a day trip is Xel-Ha. Wow, probably the most amazing experience ever. Huge tropical sea inlet with tropical fish, stingrays, etc. and much much more. Save yourself $45 US per person that they charge for the bus to XelHa and rent a car. Renting a car for the day was $500 pesos (about $35-40). Go with another couple and split the cost of the rental in half, ends up being about $10 per person. If you do rent a car make sure you verify all sides of the car for scratches and make sure the guy writes them all down, most cars are full of scratches because most tourists treat them like crap. Also, some cars include radio CD player others don't, if you rent one with a radio make sure it works, ours didn't. If you wait until you return the vehicle to let them know, you won't get any refund. You have much more leverage with the company before you leave on your trip than after it is done. Obviously this is common sense and this advice should be taken no matter where in the world you rent a car, even at home. It is important to note that you can negotiate almost anything in Mexico. Whether its in the market (real price is about 1/3rd of what they initially tell you) or even with the car rental. We went to ask about the car rental the night before our trip and we ended getting the car at 6pm the night before for free. We only paid for the 24 hour period starting at 8am the next day. Try to negotiate everything. If you speak spanish, your negotiation potential obviously increases, but even if you don't, everyone in Cancun speaks pretty decent English.

CONCLUSION: Cancun Hilton is an amazing place to stay, don't even hesitate. We paid about $800 CAN for two people for the whole week and it was worth every penny. The other hotels on expedia at the same price (FiestaAmericana, Westin, Hyatt, Park Royal Grand, etc..) really have no beach, the Hitlon DOES. We would definitely go back to this place, especially for the amazing price/quality ratio.

Management response from Hilton Cancun, Manager
(Management representative)
Jul 10, 2009
Our beach is something we are most proud of: we have the most beach of any hotel on the peninsula. Depending on the time of year, the waves may be a little rough but there are lifeguards who keep an eye on currents and safe swimming areas. Our pool complex is also one of our best features, and we are proud to boast one of the largest and most beautiful pool areas in Cancun. We are greatful that these two important features are being highlighted in the feedback.

We stayed for two nights here at the beginning and end of our trip. Both times were exceptional! The rooms were large and comfortable with amazing views of the turquoise ocean and pools. We dined in the little grillside patio and the beachside restaurant. The menu was sophisticated and upscale and the food was elegantly served! The grounds were clean, well-maintained and functioning. Easy access to beach, beautiful infinity pools with swim-up bar, and also kid-friendly sections available! The lobby is beautiful with plants cascading from the top floors trailing down the sides giving an air of openess and spaciousness. The staff were friendly and accommodating.

I have to start off by saying we learned you can take a taxi ride to/from the Hilton to the aiport for $15 USD each way. You can walk down the hill a few steps from the Hilton bell desk and negotiate a rate with the drivers. Our favorite taxi driver was Felipe Gomez (who sometimes parks it in front of the Hilton waiting for business). You can ask for him or have the hotel call him for you. His cell is [--].

We stayed at the Hilton Cancun 4 days 3 nights in June. It was a Ghost Town due to the Swine Flu scare.
I found that Hilton Honors members do not get their own check in area/special treatment, you have to wait like everyone else. Also, you do not get access to the spa, only the gym. So if you are looking for that VIP H.H. treatment, don't be suprised that you wont be pampered like usual.
The hotel however was beautiful! The pool is spectacular, warm, clean, and enormous. Not to mention they have a swim up "pool bar" in the center. Two hot tubs on each side of the pool (one warm and one hot). Hammocks were tied all around the resort which was so nice to lay in at night and look at the sky. The beach had tons of seating/tables and umbrellas for Hilton guests. You could also order food on the beach. We spent most of our time in the pool area and had a blast.

First two nights we stayed in room 259 which was an King Ocean View room.
Personally I feel this is the best view in the whole joint. It has a front and centered view of the pool/ocean (see pictures). Down side is that the TV is very blurry (but who cares you're in Cancun), our shower had a bad leak and we had to get it repaired because it was flooding the bathroom, carpet was very dirty, and we had to call multiple times for service.
The last night we upgraded to room 532 which was a Spa Suite. We checked in and we had dirty dishes outside our room that weren't removed until the next day. No big deal just another reason it felt the hotel service was not the usual Hilton...Our Spa Suite had no pool view only beach. The jacuzzi on the balcony was an experience! This room was much larger with an enormous balcony complete with seating area, tables, and tons of space to hang out.
Our King Ocean View was $89.00
Our Spa Suite was $219.00
The two most annoying things about staying at the Hilton that you might want to weigh before you book your stay here:
-The hotel is just far enough from everything that it sucks to walk anywhere. The bus is only .60 cents but it was annoying to have to take it (or a taxi) to get anywhere. Because the Hilton food is a.) expensive to eat at three meals a day and b.) not very good at all! you will want to eat out or at least run to the 7-11 to get booze and snacks. Wished the hotel was a little closer to ANYTHING.
-The food in our opinion was terrible (and I am not a picky eater, neither is my friend).
My bacon/cheese omelette taste like paper and the bacon was literally bacon bits. The service was so bad that I had to get up to pour my own refill of OJ and also to ask for our check.
Our room service Pancake Breakfast came with three BITE SIZE silver dollar pancakes which were cold...you get the picture. Let's just say we were very excited to eat at the airport on day four instead of the Hilton.
The drinks at the hotel were great but we waited at a table for 15 minutes and then tried ordering again at the bar for another 10 before we could get the bar tender to finally give us our drinks. 25 minutes for a drink was a bit irritating especially when he kept saying he got our order ...made us wait...then came back and asked what we wanted again.

Food and servicewise the hotel was not up to par.
Everything else about the hotel- the pool, the beach, the views, the spa suite were all perfect. It was a love/hate stay at the Hilton Cancun, just wanted to share my experience.

*Swine Flu P.S. - We traveled the early part of June and Mexico was still taking Swine Flu precautions. We still had to go through the Health Department at the airport in/out of Mexico, complete with extra forms, and temperature reading. Also, airlines stopped giving out pillows so bring your own if needed.

We booked for a very good price and feel that we got more than we paid for. The pool and grounds were beautiful and well maintained. The lobby was also prettier in real life than in photos. Our room was clean and comfortable, nothing spectacular but on the good side of average. The beach was pretty but as previous reviewers mentioned, the beach was rocky, combined with the rough waves, I felt it was too dangerous to swim. 30 Yards down the beach, there was an area that looked a bit safer to swim between the Hilton and the next resort... but there was no lifeguard.

My complaints are few and minor:
1. There was always music playing at the pool that was too loud. it was especially a problem at night since our room overlooked the pool.
2. Since it was low season, many of the hotel services were closed like the spa and one of the restaurants.
3. The food was mediocre and a bit pricey. That is pretty typical for hotels in general.

With that said, overall we had a great stay and I would recommend it and would stay there again. Great value for the money.

We booked this hotel kind of last minute... It was a pleasant surprise when we arrived. The grounds are beautifully kept and the hotel pools were practically empty because people are afraid of the Swine flu. It's too bad because there are ZERO cases in Cancun and it's killed their economy.

We took the bus pretty much everywhere - for 15 whole pesos for both of us (roughly $1.20 US) we couldn't justify a taxi every time we wanted to go somewhere. We ate at this place called La Padilla and it was really great - food, service, atmosphere - everything. But you might want to take a taxi since the bus doesn't get you very close and if you don't speak Spanish, it might be hard to find. We did find a place the next day called the Tequila Grill in the Kulkulcan Mall that is by the same people, right on the bus route, much less crowded and equally great food. As for the hotel's restaurants, we only ate at the Kiosko (outside pool grill) and got room service. Both were good - the burger at the Kiosko was probably the best one we had in Mexico and was reasonably priced at about $11 US. We didn't want to do an all-inclusive hotel since we don't drink... and we spent less money finding our own meals than it would have cost to purchase an all-inclusive room anyway so it worked out.

As for activities, we did Chichen Itza as a day tour and Isla Mujeres on our own day tour. BUY ALL OF YOUR SOUVENIERS AT CHICHEN ITZA, NOT IN THE SHOPS OR RESTAURANTS. We found everything we had already purchased for 2 or 3x cheaper from the random vendors on blankets inside Chichen Itza. Learn from our mistake! You can take the ferry to Isla Mujeres for $6 per person round trip from UltraMar. You just need to take the bus that says PUERTO JUAREZ and you will be dropped off right in front. Give yourself an entire day - the beaches are more beautiful than any we've seen and you can walk literally a quarter mile out into the sea at the north end of the island. You can rent a golf cart and drive all over, but they have to be returned by 5 so get there early and make a day of it.

We really enjoyed our week in Cancun, and will probably be back someday.
