There are so many Mayan archeological sites scattered all across the Yucatan Peninsula that it is easy to overlook a site like the Ruinas del Rey. But it is well worth a visit. It is right on the edge of busy Boulevard Kulkulcan at the south end of the hotel zone but once you enter the ruins you are in a different world. Somehow, it is impossibly quiet and peaceful in the ruins.
The Ruinas are largely overlooked by the toursits who crowd Coba, Tulum, and Chichen Itza.

The ruins are actually quite extensive. We hired an older man who offered to act as a guide for US$5. He showed us round the stie for over an hour and we were impressed by his extensive knowledge. I paid him US$20 and it was a bargain at that price!!!

There are a large number of iguanas in the ruins. According to the guide, the Mayans brought the iguanas to the site and used them for food.

The site is easily accessibly by bus or taxi and outside of a very steep entrance ramp, is accessible by wheelchair. Visitors can climb on most of the ruins.

One tip: When we visited in December 2006 they were doing renovations and the restrooms were closed. In fact, from the street, the entire site looked closed. Once we went down the ramp there was a man selling entrance tickets for a nominal fee.

We went to the Ruins with the Jeep Adventure, it was everything they said it would be. It started at the ruins, which we caught the bus too. They gave us a great tour, we got to feed the iguanas also. Then we took the jeeps to the jungle, to do the zip line, it was amazing. The guide that is in charge of the zip line and lives in the jungle does an amazing job. It is so much fun. Then we swam in the underground caves (cenotes). BEAUTIFUL. Then we had lunch in Puerto Morales and went to the beach and then the zoo. It was truly worth every penny and was exactly what they said. The guide was fantastic, he even dropped us back at our hotel, instead of having us catch a bus from the ruins.

We decided not to take the 3 hour bus trip to Chichen Itza and go to El Rey instead from our hotel, we took the bus for 65 cents.

They charged us 8.00 each for the tour, when the sign said 3.00 for entrance. I was going to argue, but considering we were the only ones there and didn't feel sooo safe, we just paid up.

We probably could have skipped the tour since they had some explanations near the ruins. The tour guide was helpful, but after a while, it was sooo hot that I just wanted to leave. There is bearly any shade. The tour is about 30 minutes.

I suggest bringing sunscreen, some bread for the iguanas, a hat, cool clothes and icy cold water for the trip.

The iguanas were the highlight of the tour. I'm glad we went to do something touristy, but could have skipped it. If you want an easy tourist excursion, this is an good option. I'm sure that kids would get a kick out of the iguanas.

We visited El Rey last week, soon after we checked in at our hotel as we didn't have much time - we got to the ruins at around 4.10 pm & they close at 5 pm but it was sufficient time. I expected the area of these ruins to be much smaller than they were & it was a nice surprise. We found it to be very hot there but we had just arrived from a much cooler Mexico City. The employee in the ticket office was semi naked & fast asleep so we had to wake him. We were the only visitors there. The ruins are lovely & we meandered about & took photos. We had applied insect repellent beforehand as we were told the area was infested with mosquitoes by a friend who had been the week before but we did not see a single mosquito. There were signs warning that there is an abundance of mosquitoes there so it's best to take some anyway. There was not too much shade when walking around the structures so lots of sunblock, hats etc are needed. I think this site was probably the best attraction in Cancun along with the beaches.

I didn't want to go on an all day trip to see ruins. These ruins are across from the El Pueblito. It costs $3 and is well worth it. There are restrooms there also. Make sure you bring bread because you can feed the iguanas. There are tons of them. We spent about 2 hours there looking at the ruins and feeding iguanas. I found it enjoyable. It would be great to bring children there. Anyone would enjoy it.
