My fiancee and I stayed at the Le Meridian Cancun for 3 nights (Friday-Monday) before traveling to some of the other Starrwood properties around the Yucatan (the Haciendas). We used Starpoints to for our stay. Check in was simple and quick. We were given a king room overlooking the series of pools and ocean. I was hoping for a balcony but our room did not have one (from the layout of the hotel is appears that 50% of the rooms have a balcony). We are very picky about beds (we have a temperpedic at home) and were very happy with the beds at the hotel. The bathroom was spacious and overall we were very pleased with the room.
The pool and the service is what makes this hotel great. The pools are all different temps (the coldest one is the middle one) and the pool area was never over crowded. We got down to the pools around midday and never had problems finding 2 chairs together. Unlike other hotels, the Le Meridian did not cram as many chairs as possible into a small area, the chairs were actually spread out fairly well. The pool service was great for drinks or food.
It might be sad to say but our favorite meals in Cancun were all at the Pool Bar / Rest. The margaritas were our favorites we had in mexico and we loved the guac / salsa / chips. I ate the Cibatta con Pollo almost everyday and it was excellent. We ate at some of the nicer places in Cancun and were consitantly dissapointed by the food (it was all good, just not really good considering the prices we paid). We went to Lorenzillo's for the famous lobster and it was good but not great (we did spend almost $200 and didn't even get a bottle of wine). We also went to Laguna Grill which would rate a 5 out of 5 for the atmosphere and a 3 out of 5 for the food. It was a really cool place with pretty good food. The other place we went to was Paloma Bonita (Mexican) and the food here was pretty good and they had a lot of live music.
The concierge at the hotel was top notch. They were incredibly helpful with re-booking out car rental and saving us money in the process (they got us a 15% discount with Hertz). We worked mostly with Sandra and she went out of her way to help us.
If you want a more romantic couple trip this is a great resort. We did not see may kids or activities for them. Also we were there during the beginning of spring break and not many spring breakers stay at this hotel.
Use the buses! We took a taxi to the Laguna Grill rest. on the first night and it was 9 dollars (we are from NYC and the walk was about 10 blocks distance or a 1/2 mile). That would be a 3 or 4 dollar cab ride in NYC. The buses are the best way to get around... if you are looking to stay in the hotel zone you can get on any bus (ignore the numbers and routes since those all apply to different parts of downtown cancun). It is 6.5 pesos per person (about 60 cents). Just be sure to sit near the front so you can tell the driver when to stop or where you want to go (they do not stop everywhere, only where they are flagged down or asked to stop).
FYI - after our trip around the yucatan we spent one last night in cancun and stayed at the CasaMagna Marriott since the Le Meridian was full. To keep it short we missed the Le Meridian. The pool at the CasaMagna was crammed with as many chairs as they could fit and the rooms were just OK. They did have a good Hibachi place for dinner. Overall if you are looking for a place for a family and kids the CasaMagna is a better choice because it is a bigger hotel and more family oriented.
IF we ever return to Cancun we WILL stay at the Le Meridian. It was a great property with great service.
