My wife, 2-year-old daughter and I had a fantastic one-week stay in early November. We are middle-class people from the midwest, and, hopefully, this review helps you. If money is no object, then this review is not for you. If you are an inpatient person, then ignore this review, too. If you are a normal, nice person, then read on...
The pool area is fabulous! It features interconnected pools of varying temperatures so you can pick the one right for you. Our daughter loves the water, so after seeing the pictures, this was the place for us, and it won't disappoint you if you're after a quiet pool experience. Because this is a smaller resort, there are plenty of pool chairs (you avoid fighting for a good seat) with either shade (good for little goods) or sun. The entire pool/spa/gym area is very tastefully done--the landscaping is outstanding. The beach, like everywhere in Cancun, is amazing--beautiful sand. Kids and families are very welcome at the Le Meridien pool area. Our daughter played with many kids during the course of our stay. If you have older kids or want something more lively in the pool area, the JW Marriott looked pretty good (more crowded, more "beach-volleyball-esque").
Overall, this is a classy, understated (in the nice sense) hotel. We found the front desk service, while not perfect, excellent as a whole and very apologetic for any mistakes. There was a problem with getting us our requested room, and (partially because we were nice) they gave us a suite for three days. We had some minibar charges that were wrong (you'll read plenty of people complaining about that in other reviews), and they immediately fixed the bill. Bottom line: be nice and they'll take care of you; don't be a spoiled brat.
The food at the pool is very good and not too expensive for pool food (it's "American" prices--$20-25 for two lunches with tip). Typically, we ate a small "snack" breakfast in our room (we brought breakfast bars, etc., and bought local fruits, drinks, etc. at the supermarket downtown--more on that later), split two adult lunches at the pool, and then went out for dinner. They have a big breakfast buffet in the hotel, but it's a little expensive ($15-20 per person or so--we didn't try it). If you want a big breakfast, catch the bus to (I can't remember the name) the breakfast buffet south of the Le Meridien (the conceriege will help you find it). For $9 per person, you get a very good buffet and the staff is friendly (although they will give you a soft-sell for a time share).
We had a lot of fun taking the bus into town for our evening meal. The bus system was safe. Our daughter is very social and enjoyed seeing the tourist and locals. The meals in town are better and much cheaper than on the island (and why would you want to eat at an American/European place in Cancun--if you do, you can stay on the island and enjoy the Outback). All the restaurants downtown were good, so I'd just go by word-of-mouth or wander around and find one you like.
There is a supermarket downtown. I would HIGHLY recommend buying your snacks, sodas and alcoholic drinks there. The island convenience stores are VERY EXPENSIVE. This supermarket is very reasonable. Go on Day One and bring your food and drinks back the hotel.
Yes, Cancun is very touristy. We've traveled to many out-of-the-way places, and Cancun isn't one. However, if you want to RELAX, hang by the pool, read, and experience an amazing beach, this is for you. We stayed a week (a little too long), and I'd recommend 4-5 days, and you'll be re-energized.
