Stayed at the Avalon Bay for my vaction recently. I went with 4 friends whereby we shared two rooms. However, the room accomodations were not the same even though we paid the same price. Our room had no phone and poor air conditioning and the other room had a phone and good air conditioning. When we both asked for bottled water in our rooms, one room got just a bottle of water, we got a bottle of water with a despensor.
The hotel itself is of an old decor and quaint. It does have a lot tropical character and demeanor to it, and the beach is nice and quiet.
The hotel staff told me that the place never fully fills up even in the in-season. There must have been five or 10 people there when we stayed.
The menu is small and the food is average.
If you are on the all inclusive deal, you will find that the grand is much, much nicer, and if you are going as a couple you will really like the reef hotel. You can snokel there and drink at the pool bar. A boat will even take you over to the reef island for free. Conversely, the grand has three pools, beautiful surf / beach, beautiful views of the ocean, and beach volleyball.
The food was awesome at both the grand and reef. When you get there, you will be amazed by the service. The staff at all three hotels treat you like kings. However, even though it is all inclusive, you will get awesome service if you throw a few dollars the waiters', bellmens' way ect..
If you are looking for a place just to crash for the night. Avalon Bay is your place. If you are looking for a nice place, try upgrading to the grand. You won't be disappointed.
In closing, my Avalon expereince was awesome. They took really care of me and my group. We went in the off-season Oct. Sept.-Oct. is suppose to be Cancun's rainy season. We didn't get rained on at all, and we had an overabundance of staff to wait on us. They only allow the all-inclusive deal once, and it was worth every penny. Oh yeah, and I didn't get sick and neither did anyone in my group. They wash there fruits, veggies, ect. and cook with bottled water.
