Spent 6 days/5nites in Avalon Grand in early August '03 with 2 other families, overall we all agreed we had a great time. I found it hard to understand some of those bad ratings I read here because it was just not true! We hesitated about going there after reading some of the harsh comments about the property. Here's my version of Avalon Grand: The hotel is in a nice part of Cancun, not a 5 star but may be a 3-4 star. They did screwed up on one of our reservation and since we arrived late on Friday night they couldn't call the travel agent to clear things up until the next day. Other than that the people there were all very friendly. We got a 2 queen bed room with partial ocean view, quite happy with it. They only came with 2 sets of towel (there are 4 of us). A phone call to housekeeping took care of that after a 30 min. wait. The imfamous "hard bed" was non-existent, I would rate our bed as a little on the firm side but comfortable. Tried room service several times and were quite satisfy with the waitng time and quanlity of the food, very friendly waiter and I did tip them. There's an elevator on our building and never had to wait for more than 1 min. The foods were quite adequate for AI-Bella Vista was good on 3 out of 4 nites, Kelly's was very good and Mi Casa was also above average, but the wait was very long (about an hour after your order!). The drinks were hit or miss, depending on who's your bartender. The pool and beach is average but we only spent 1 day @ Grand's beach. Avalon's other hotel in Isla Mujeres was much better than the Grand, we spent a whole day there and really fell in love with it. By the way we did go to the time share and it was a very nice experience, low to no pressure and lasted about 80 minutes. When we said "no thanks" they didn't give any pressure and I found their salespeople very professional, with an exception of that blonde thin mexican lady at the Timeshare desk. She was superfriendly before the timeshare and turned 180 degrees after the time share presentation, unbelievable! By attenting the timeshare we were able to book all our tours from the hotel at an average discount of 40 % (big savings!). We would love to go back to the Grand if the price is right.

We stayed at the Avalon Grand in Cancun 8/29 through 9/2/03. The hotel LOOKS great but service and ammenities are seriously lacking. When we checked in they put my friend and I in a very small room with only one full sized bed. We were told by our travel agent we would have two queen sized beds. I slept on the tiny loveseat couch the first night.
Despite complaining and the staff promising to "look into it" it was only after we paid additional for an upgraded room that we got the room we were "supposed" to have all along. The beds were hard as a rock. We couldn't get towels and washclothes without requesting them several times from housekeeping. The "daily" maid cleaning consisted of throwing out the trash but not much else. When ordering room service the employees didn't speak or understand much English so our order was always wrong. On the positive if you want a resort "right on the beach" this is it. I wouldn't stay there again.

Do not stay at this "all-inclusive" hotel. The food is absolutely horrible, looking even worse than it tasted. Only one "cafeteria-style" restaurant and the other restaurant is used to entice "club purchasers." You can make reservations for dinner at the other restaurant, but the chances are they'll screw up your reservations, as they did ours. Taquilas and vodkas are very cheap and give you a headache the next day. For 116 rooms there are 3 umbrellas at the beach and two covered spots by the pool. The rooms are adequate, but no effort is done to soundproof. To get coffee in the morning took at least 3 reminders and 20 minutes. No service at the beach, except for the walk-up bar (poorly stacked). The beach is gorgeous! but stay anywhere else in Cancun!

Read the reviews went to see for myself. Stayed at the Avalon Grand 2 - 16 July 2003 Beach A1, Pools fantastic, plenty to eat and drink. The kids loved the hotdogs and hamburgers at the Poolside and Kelly's at night. Staff fantastic especially Jose in Kellys and Carlos by the pool. the only downside was that there wasn't any entertainment for the kids. Best holiday I have every been on, I didn't want to come home and that is not me, usually 10 days does me. Would definitely go back. (but hope to miss the hurricane warning next time)

I just returned back from my trip to Cancun 8/14-8/19 and had to review my stay at the Avalon Grand. This site is wonderful and very helpful tool when looking for info. on hotels etc. Anway Avalon Grand, is not a 5 star resort as they claim! After reading the comments listed below I was prepared and anticipated a few things which were very much truthful. The beds are very hard! You have to enjoy a massage at the spa after sleeping on them for a number of days. The rooms were small, had an ordor after a while and the water (showers) didn't get hot at certain times throughout the day. To note the first day they actually placed us in a room next to the kitchen where we heard banging of pots and pans up unitl 1 am and early as 5am. They finally moved us the 2nd day to another room, which was smaller but away from the kitchen. The food display in the buffet sytle restaurant is not appetizing, but the food was decent and well seasoned. The Mexican restaurant was also OK, the prices at the Porter House were a bit expensive so we didn't dine there. Overall the food was a 6 on a scale of 10. Don't bother to order a pina colada if you want to taste alcohol, I felt I was drinking a coconut shake. I had to ask the bartender to put an extra 3 shots of bacardi rum (that's what the bottle label claims, who really knows) for me to taste any kind of alcohol. If you are an owner, they will treat you better. Don't do the so called 90 minute tour if you're not interested in buying a time share. Otherwise you will waste 3 hours of your time anyway. Of course they show you the 2 bedroom suite which I'm sure is the only one on the whole property. We met a couple who bought into a 1BR, and they never saw it. They were put into a studio apt instead even though they booked their stay 6 months in advance. As far as activites only a few which center around the pool area. The location of the hotel is in a good spot across from Planet Hollywood & Flamingo Plaza which is a small mall. You can take a short bus ride to hit the clubs etc. If you go over to Isla Ma Jueres you can enjoy the other Avalon which was OK, smaller and more private. If you have the all inclusive package. Oh yes and all inclusive you're not supposed to tip, but they are looking still looking for tips.
