My brother-in-law owns with Avalon and we originally booked our room with his through Avalon; however we found a nicer room (a one bedroom) through Interval for three hundred dollars less and switched our reservation. We did this believing that we would receive member's benefits once at the resort as we were taking another member's room. Little did we know that Avalon does not honor member's benefits for anyone traveling on a timeshare stay. In fact, they place people traveling through Interval in the worst rooms without a chance of ocean view. We were only saved because we were traveling with a member.
After this large disappointment, the trip continued to go down hill. There is only one restaurant open and the bar downstairs was closed. I feel sorry for those who were all-inclusive, very few choices. The meals we had were decent with one exception. We entered the restaurant when 12 other guests were eating and it was too much for the staff. Three of the four meals were cold and my pasta without meat came with meat. I sent it back and it had been "picked" almost clean with some meat still present (pretty gross to think of how the meat was removed). The staff did nothing when this was pointed out.
The beach was actually a pleasant surprise. You could enter the water and enjoy the waves. There was no area to sunbathe, but it served its purpose. The pool area was kept clean, but there was a lack of shade.
We visited Isla Mujeres with our family (they had to go for the member's talk), but we were required to pay seperately for all of our transportation etc. My sister-in-law did not get the services as a member that she believed she would - but I will let her post about that is she wishes.
If you want coffee, bring it with you. We were charged 4 dollars American every morning for a packet that did not even make 3 full cups. If you are all-inclusive this would be free.
The biggest disappointment was the activities. Everything was cancelled and no alternatives were offered. We had three 14 year olds with us and when we asked about the pool party that was advertised we were told it was not happening, but the kids could go to the discotheque the next night for free - 14 and clubbing - they must be nuts.
Like the tag line says, we have visited twice in the past and never had problems. It is still a nice quaint resort with rock hard beds, but all of the service from Avalon is gone. The only people concerned and polite were the bellmen. I would not recommend this hotel to any one until they return to the level they used to be. Unfortunately, I wasn't the only guest that felt this way - I just hope they also post.
