We had originally planned to arrive in Cancun early in the morning from a red-eye flight and continue on to Valladolid by car.
A delayed flight and missed connection later, we found ourselves in Cancun at 7 at night, with no reservations anywhere, no knowledge of the town (except for how to get a rental car at the airport), and no real sleep for almost 48 hours.
We managed to get to the bus station downtown, sat my mom and the kids down at a restaurant across the street from the station, then started walking around trying to find a hotel room(s) for 7 of us. After getting quotes from much sketchier looking places, we came full circle to the Plaza Caribe right next door to the chicken place we left everyone else at.
We got a decent price on connected rooms that had 4 double beds and a shared bathroom. After spending 8 hours in a sleep deprived daze in the Mexico City airport, this seemed like heaven on earth.
In reality it was safe, clean, comfortable, no more, no less. It actually had pretty nice grounds, with a surprising amount of green space for the location, a playground, a pool and an open air restaurant.
The shared bathroom was kind of weirdly set up- you could close it off to one of the rooms fully, but not the other. The toilet and shower were in separate stalls, though, so there was some privacy.
The restaurant was fine- a little pricey, but the food was fine, the atmosphere was nice, and the service was good.
There are probably better places for a longer stay, but for a last minute find, it was a very pleasant surprise.
