Considering the price it isn't a bad little hotel at all. The worse thing are definitely the rooms, we booked a twin and it was very shabby. The shower was a tiny high-pressure jet of water which was painful to stand in and the floor was constantly wet due to an inability to drain properly. No plug for the bath and no plughole cover, meaning you had a good view of the Mexican drain system during showering. The toilet was the worse, with a poor flush meaning that the only way to get rid of a number 2 was to fill up the wastepaper bin with water from the bath and pour it into the toilet bowl! We did try not flushing paper down the toilet, as recommended in Mexico, but still the flush problem never resolved itself. Air conditioning was noisy and relatively ineffective. No elevators to the rooms was a problem when struggling with heavy bags in 30 degree heat. The room also lacked one thing I always thought of as vital in a hot country - a refrigerator! No mini bar either. Not only that there was a lot of noise from a nearby late-night bar which blasted music out until 5am (fortunately I'm a good sleeper).

The only positive sides to the rooms were a good selection of TV channels and the plug adapters, which saved me a trip around the electrical stores.

OK, the positives to the hotel: first of all the location, during the day at least its quiet but at the same time just 2 minutes walk from the heart of Cancun and all the nightlife and shopping. We went to Cancun to party and you couldn''t ask for a better hotel. Its perfectly safe to walk to/from the centre at any time of the day or night. The pool, though shallow, is also fantastic, as its a long one great for swimming lengths. No loud music by the pool either so its great to relax. The breakfast and meal bar by the pool was a bit rudimentary but with so many restaurants and bars within 10 minutes walk, that wasn't a problem. Being next to the lagoon was also good for wildlife, lots of lizards and iguanas on patrol, crocs swimming in the water and an osprey visiting every morning.

The tour desk was also very helpful.

For people wanting to party hard and relax during the day, this is the perfect hotel. However, the crowd was generally over 45, so its fine for the old ones too. I would never recommend it for a romantic break, more for people seeking party action or value for money with the freedom of not having to go all inclusive.

The Clipper Club proved to be clean and dry. It was a stop-over for us on our way to Playa Del Carmen, and although close to the "action", we found ourselves way too old for the nightlife (we're in our mid-40's).
The hotel is adequate. We stayed in a suite on the third floor of what appeared to be condominium/townhouse type buildings. The suite included a very large bathroom, a kitchenette, a dining area, and a bedroom with a king size bed and a twin bed. The amenities were fine. We were not expecting a five-star hotel, and we were not disappointed. The only problem we saw was not due to the hotel at all, just the fact that two years prior the area was ravaged by hurricanes and the cleanup is still an ongoing process.
The Clipper Club afforded us a dry and comfortable bed, a good buffet breakfast, and good proximity to a lot of dining options and shopping areas. We got what we paid for. We were satisfied.
Our recommendation would be that before booking this hotel, request a suite (we had friends in a "regular room" that was on the first floor and thus had the smell of mildew from the hurricanes and was not a appealing).

We just returned from the Yucatan last week. We stayed here for one night before we headed off for Tulum, Merida and then Playa Del Carmen.

This place worked out perfectly for us. It was little tough to find because we were driving in the dark when we arrived and there wasn't much signage. But, we managed to find it anyway.

The hotel is located off the lagoon and all rooms have a view of the lagoon - so that is just great. And, we were fortunate enough to be assigned a beautiful 20ft ceiling room on the top floor. Our expectactions were not very high based on some of the reviews we read. But, we were very pleasantly surprised. The room was in great condition - clean; well-maintained; nicely and simply decorated; and the view was great. The room was very quite. We slept very well!

If we were staying more than one night - the lack of direct access to the beach would be very frustrating - but, if you don't mind that, this little place has a nice pool and trampoline for the kids. The little restaurant facing the lagoon is also very nice. And a good price for breakfast.

This hotel is basically a dump. It's not just that the hotel rooms need updating, it was dirty. The floor drains in the bathroom do indeed smell like poop, which fills the bathroom. The only plus is the location, it is near a lot of clubs and restaurants. We stayed a week at an all inclusive in the Rivera Maya and finished our trip with a night here just to experience a bit of the party side of Cancun. Anything more than a night would be terrible.

I sent the following letter to Best Western after a terrible stay at the clipper club.
December 18, 2006
Gentlemen;

A month ago it was our misfortune to spend time at your Cancun Clipper Club while on a business trip to Cancun. My two office colleagues and myself could not believe this is a Best Western hotel. Our company almost always chooses Best Western not only because of the amenities that the vacation traveler might enjoy, or expect, but for the considerations that the business traveler both expects and demands in a hotel.

Before we booked our rooms at the Cancun Clipper Club we were assured that we had twenty-four hour internet access, fax capabilities, copy machines, a meeting room, etc., etc. After we checked into the hotel we scheduled meetings for that day with our Cancun, and Merida customers. At our Cancun clients’ request, our meeting place was to be at his office in downtown Cancun instead of the Clipper Club – thank God. As it was later learned, the meeting room at the Clipper Club was being used as a storage room, filled with tables, chairs, old televisions, a pool table, etc.

At the end of a very long, but productive meeting my colleagues and I darted back to the Clipper Club to put our notes in order and sign onto our company’s WEB site to upload notes, meeting minutes, proposals, and recommendations to our company’s mainframe in New York. We finally got back to the hotel, and none of our laptops could pickup the hotels’ WIFI signal. After asking the desk people what the problem was we were told that only half of the hotel could pickup the signal (obviously the half we weren’t staying in.) The desk clerk went on to say that we could use the computers in what was laughingly called the “business center.” The business center is a small room off the lobby with two desktop computers in it. The business center was filled with cackling young girls waiting their turn to Email boyfriends and girlfriends at home. There are no desks to spread out your paperwork, no fax machines, and no copy machines. Even if the computers in the business center were not in use we would not use those computers because of security reasons. We were told that because of the late hour (11:30 PM) we would have to wait till morning to use the fax and the copy machines. I was livid to say the least.

The following day had us at another meeting at 7:00 AM. At the end of the second day our notes were bulging out of our attaché cases, and we were starting to get impatient phone calls from our corporate office wondering why we hadn’t uploaded our business strategies. At the hotel we tried to get rooms that could pickup WIFI signals, but the night clerk said there were not enough rooms available on the WIFI side of the hotel.

On the morning of the third day I cancelled our scheduled meetings and called the Cancun Holliday Inn to see if they had any rooms for us, along with the business amenities we required – they did, and we moved. We stayed at the Holiday Inn another five days with no problems at all. After leaving Cancun we went on to Costa Rica, and then to China. We haven’t stayed at a Best Western yet, nor has anyone else at my company.

This type of treatment was unexpected, and totally caught us off guard. As stated above, our company uses Best Western more often than not, but this experience has made us gun shy, and will cause us to take a second look as to where we stay on future business trips. I hope this does not signal the end of a long, and satisfying relationship.

Sincerely,
Mary Chiazzese

I received an Email response from someone in management at the Clipper Club. In his response he said the reason we could not get a WIFI signal in our rooms is because "the walls of the building are too thick." Can you believe that? Evidentally they're not too thick on the other side of the hotel.
