“Good alternative to the all inclusive”

Cancun Plaza Condo Hotel

We stayed at the Cancun Plaza Condos from Aug 16-Aug 19 2006 for $60 per night.

This is not a hotel. These are condos - there is no front desk - just the little office of the owners you are renting from. Don't go expecting to get waited on. This is the kind of place for people who like to do their own thing - no all inclusive here.

Our 1st room was a basic hotel room size with 2 double beds, a microwave, mini fridge & kitchenette area. It had a sink, dishes, toaster & coffeemaker. This room had a small balcony overlooking the pool. It has cable tv and a small table & chairs as well. We ended up having to switch rooms due to a toilet that didn't want to flush right but it was no big deal.

We moved next door which was bigger but only had a mini fridge & table & chairs. This room did not have a balcony (it was an adjoining room to the other one we just left) but we were ok with that as we were traveling with a climbing baby.

This hotel/condo has gotten a little older looking each time we come, but we still return year after year. Each condo units are owned by different owners. This is the key to getting a good room at a decent rate. Some there were paying $150 a night for the same kind of room we got for $60!

There are different types of rooms depending on your needs as some have kitchens and some don't. The pool is very nice & big with one side being a wading pool great for small children. The other half that overlooks the ocean is big but is only about 4 feet deep. No deep end here.

There is a small store there and also a woman who is selling fruits & pastries in the mornings. While we where there the small palapa bar where you could get snacks & drinks was being rebuilt as was the bigger store/& laundry. They are working hard to recover from Wilma and seem to be doing great. It will be a plus when this reopens as there is no restaurant onsite anymore.

The beach was huge! It was more than double the size it used to be. This is the southern end of the hotel zone, away from the bars and such so it is quieter, but only a short bus ride to get there if you want to go. This hotel is located a few buildings down from the Hilton as a reference.

Positives - very cheap, on a great stretch of beach, good security, nice pool, units are made to make you feel like you are at home.

Negatives - dated building, thin walls - you can hear people in the hallways very clearly, gaps around doors, bathrooms have that "sewer smell" (but I've smelled that in many hotels in Cancun).

We will definitely be back.

“Great location, excellent value”

I visited Mexico for the first time in August '05 and if I was to visit again, I would definately return here. If you're expecting a 5* All Inclusive resort, then this is not for you, but if you're looking for somewhere cheap and cheerful, you've come to the right place.

The complex is situated at the far end of the strip meaning that it's in a quiet, but very convenient and easily accessible location (buses/taxis are very cheap and very frequent and they stop right outside the complex.) You're well out of the way of the noise (and Cancun is very noisy) and the beach is really quiet. Rocks - there is a small strip of rocks at the water's edge, but they are easily avoided if you want to swim/snorkel. Don't let this put you off. The turtles eggs were hatching really close to the hotel whilst we were here, so if the beach is good enough for them, it's certainly good enough for me!!!

The rooms are basic and as they're privately owned, the decor varies considerably. We had our beds made, towels changed and the bathrooms cleaned on a daily basis. The rooms were more than adequate and had great views. Why would you need a luxury suite anyway in a country with as much to see and do as this? Surely if you expect one, you'd be paying a lot more than these prices?

The pool area was lovely and the beach couldn't have been more easily accessible. The food at the pool bar was really cheap and very tasty and the staff there were lovely.

Overall, this place is by no means perfect. If you want silk sheets and waiter service, be prepared to pay for it. If you want somewhere that's good value, to leave your bags and relax quietly by the pool from time to time, this is the place for you.

“Great Time”

My family and I stayed at Cancun Plaza over Easter break. We had an awesome time. Peter Hartman and Chris were great hosts. Having the kitchen was a huge plus. We took the bus to downtown Cancun and loaded up on groceries, snacks and drinks. We mixed that with a few meals down by the pool and several diners on the strip.

The pool and beach were gorgeous and the sunrise from the balcony and morning coffee was to die for.

If you are looking to be catered on hand and foot this is not the place to go. If you are looking to be a little more adventuress and figure out things on your own than I highly recommend one of Tina and Peter Hartman’s rooms.

We will definitely be back

“Cancun Plaza is not a hotel”

Cancun Plaza Condo Hotel

We have stayed at Cancun Plaza many times over the years. We love it. This is a condominium complex, not a hotel. Units are rented by owners. You need to know the owner or get references about them. Cheap rent means, well, cheap. Figure it out. We rent from great owners who take care of their units. Tina and Peter Hartman manage many units and do a GREAT job. If you want your your every whim met, go to a swanky hotel or resort. If you are independent and willing to immerse yourself culturally (i.e. speak some Spanish instead of yelling English) you will enjoy your experience. Some owners and/or managers are not good, but that should not reflect on all the owners and managers who do a great job.
Cancun has done an awesome job recovering from Wilma. Reconstruction continues and it takes time.
