We stayed at the Cancun Plaza Condos from Aug 16-Aug 19 2006 for $60 per night.
This is not a hotel. These are condos - there is no front desk - just the little office of the owners you are renting from. Don't go expecting to get waited on. This is the kind of place for people who like to do their own thing - no all inclusive here.
Our 1st room was a basic hotel room size with 2 double beds, a microwave, mini fridge & kitchenette area. It had a sink, dishes, toaster & coffeemaker. This room had a small balcony overlooking the pool. It has cable tv and a small table & chairs as well. We ended up having to switch rooms due to a toilet that didn't want to flush right but it was no big deal.
We moved next door which was bigger but only had a mini fridge & table & chairs. This room did not have a balcony (it was an adjoining room to the other one we just left) but we were ok with that as we were traveling with a climbing baby.
This hotel/condo has gotten a little older looking each time we come, but we still return year after year. Each condo units are owned by different owners. This is the key to getting a good room at a decent rate. Some there were paying $150 a night for the same kind of room we got for $60!
There are different types of rooms depending on your needs as some have kitchens and some don't. The pool is very nice & big with one side being a wading pool great for small children. The other half that overlooks the ocean is big but is only about 4 feet deep. No deep end here.
There is a small store there and also a woman who is selling fruits & pastries in the mornings. While we where there the small palapa bar where you could get snacks & drinks was being rebuilt as was the bigger store/& laundry. They are working hard to recover from Wilma and seem to be doing great. It will be a plus when this reopens as there is no restaurant onsite anymore.
The beach was huge! It was more than double the size it used to be. This is the southern end of the hotel zone, away from the bars and such so it is quieter, but only a short bus ride to get there if you want to go. This hotel is located a few buildings down from the Hilton as a reference.
Positives - very cheap, on a great stretch of beach, good security, nice pool, units are made to make you feel like you are at home.
Negatives - dated building, thin walls - you can hear people in the hallways very clearly, gaps around doors, bathrooms have that "sewer smell" (but I've smelled that in many hotels in Cancun).
We will definitely be back.
