“Thoroughly enjoyed our stay!”

We just returned from Hyatt Caribe on Easter Sunday 2008. I had read the recent reviews before our departure (3/15) and had my doubts on what we had gotten ourselves into. We were pleasantly surprised! We stayed in the hotel room for 1/2 our trip and then in the villa for the rest of our stay. We enjoyed BOTH! The shower in the villa was amazing! And we were right on the beach, so the view was spectacular! All hotel rooms face the ocean as well, so there isn't a "bad seat" in the house!

The service was GREAT! Everyone went out of their way to be of assistance, and we developed many friendships among the staff. I am convinced that people who complain about unfriendliness are undoubtedly that way themselves, no? The peacocks were a treat! We bought a loaf of Bimbo bread (don't you love that name?) and got them to eat out of our hand. Amazing birds. We delighted in the male's feather display and took many, many photos.

We found the facilities to be beautiful - marble floors, columns, etc. and everything was SO CLEAN. The staff is always busy and this was the cleanest place we've stayed in Mexico!

There are steps - and no other way into the hotel to check in. Consider that if you are bringing handicapped people with you. We brought my mom - nearly 80, and I was just recovering from surgery on a leg, so we were a sorry sight to start our trip. We have found this somewhat typical of many places we have stayed in Mexico - steps, steps, steps. We've even found that true for some high end restaurants in various parts of Mexico - and not always railings. That's just how things are done, nothing to complain about - after all you are in another country! Their codes are not like America, you know.

The pools were beautiful. The ocean was a gorgeous turquoise color, and couldn't have been prettier. The beach is cool at all times - sand is not silica (which absorbs the sun's heat) but very powdery fine coral shell (?) which stays cool. You do not need to run to the ocean or wear shoes to protect your feet from the heat.

The wind was unusual the week we were there. We heard the weather everywhere was odd. That happens at home, too, you know. We had 2 very windy days where we could not sit by the pools or the beach. In fact, we could hardly stand up outside! The rest of the stay was much calmer. Flags were always clearly visible to note the ocean swimming condition, and there was a lifeguard on duty during the days. (I have not seen this before, but it was comforting.)

The food was great! We ate mostly at the Cocay Cafe right there at the Hyatt. They had a different theme each evening - Caribbean, Asian, Italian, Mexican, etc. and they decorated daily according to the theme. Breakfast buffets varied a little each day also, so you didn't get bored with the exact same choices. Keep in mind we were there during their "high weeks' and the prices were high. $20 per person for the breakfast buffet and about $28 for the eve. buffet. We took a taxi out to eat once or twice, but by the time you pay round trip ($16 round trip) you mjight as well have stayed there. The food was great, the service excellent, and the convenience woth it!

The pathway areas should be repaired or replaced as it was very uneven and not great for walking from the room to the pool or beach. Again, keep this in mind if you are bringing elderly (I always held mom's hand as she walked with her cane.) or if you have small children, DON'T LET THEM RUN.

If you read negative remarks on this hotel, please remember there are always people who are never satisfied. I always feel you travel to a foreign country for a different experience. If you want to have everything the way you are used to at home, then stay at home. Right?

We loved the experience and would recommend the hotel and the villas.

Oh - the pool by the beds was awesome. There was a rim around one edge where they had lounge chairs, so you could be in the pool on a chair. Very clever.

There was a more than ample supply of lounge chairs around all the pools, so what I appreciated MOST was that we never had to get up at 4AM to save a spot like we've had to in other Mexico locations.

“Beautiful Resort”

Hyatt Cancun Caribe Resort

Went to the Hyatt Cancun Caribe the 3rd week of Jan with 3 girlfriends. The 4 of us are early 30's and single. It is an absolutely beautiful resort. We had an ocean view. The room and the view were spectacular. It is in a good location. Close to the club district and local plaza (25min walk or 5 min by bus). The beach is absolutely beautiful. Water is the clearest and most beautiful colour I have seen anywhere. (i travel alot). There are rocks when you are getting in which can hurt your feet and my friends chickened out because of that, but once you are in it is absolutely amazing. (apparently that is the case along most of the resorts along the strip) The water was calm although we had heard it had been rough for a few days just before we got there. The security from the beach stopped peddlers from bothering us which was much appreciated. The hotel has a hot tub which was a plus. The four of us went in at 3am and happily noone bothered us. Breakfast on the outdoor patio is amazing. The view, the service, the food is A+++. (about $18 with tip). Not 1 person bothered us the entire time about time shares which was surprisingly nice. The only negatives i can say is that the hotel doesn't have a fitness gym. You get one free bottle of water in your room everyday but we tried to explain there was 4 of us and they refused to give us 4 bottles. The toilettries were not replenished unless we asked for it. We were there for 3 days and everyday our room key would disactivate automatically and we would be locked out from our room and have to go down to the lobby to reactivate it. The 2nd time it happened there was another frustrated lady at the front desk complaining about the same issue only her room was a 5 min walk from the lobby and she had 2 small kids and mine was only 2 min. walk. However this was still annoying. Doors slam really loud because of the breeze from outside. There was not alot of action or excitement there. This can be a plus though for people looking for peace and quiet and relaxation. It was mostly older couples or families with older children. A beautiful tropical and serene vacation!

“Great Hyatt Regency Club experience”

Hyatt Cancun Caribe Resort

Mar 19, 2008
3/3 found this review helpful

My advice, upgrade to the Regency Club level. You'll enjoy a private breakfast room with waves crashing just below and great snacks and drinks in the evening, enough to avoid hitting the crowded strip restaurants if you choose. The staff in the Regency Club is superb and helpful. The in-room jacuzzi and rainfall shower are perfect after a long beach day. The Regency pool is quieter and void of riff-raff Spring Breakers too.

Other tips, for safety Do close your patio doors at night and Do use the in-room safe to store valuables when you're out of the room and asleep. Better safe than sorry.

    • Disliked — Beach has eroded quite a bit b/c of the Hurricane.

“Fabulous Hotel and Vacation”

I booked this trip to celebrate my 40th birthday with my husband and 4 year old son. We booked the rooms in the new building on the beachfront. These were spectacular. New, clean, huge, balcony, etc. We had access to club lounge as well but they do not allow children so had to eat breakfast buffet at restaurant and sort out billing (we got a credit and it was free but they kept billing it wrong). the buffet was excellent - even if you do the "cold buffet" there is cereal, muesli (delicious), fruit, cheese and cold cuts. We did the hot buffet once but I felt like it was so heavy so early in the morning.

We were concerned about car safety so rented a car with our own car seat. You really don't need to rent a car - ours sat idly in the lot 5 of the 7 days. The bus is right in front of hotel and for a $1 you can go almost anywhere.

I did run to Walmart (about 1/2 hour drive in traffic from hotel) and bought fruit, soft drinks, a case of bottled water, candy snacks, wine and beers for the week. This saved us a ton of $$. I met a lady there who had the hotel call her a taxi to go there - well worth the overall savings.

The hotel has these king sized outdoor beds for lounging by the pool (see photo below). For those of you who've been to Vegas, you know they charge $250 a day to use these and a hefty food minimum. At this hotel, FREE, no minimum food cost, just get there early to get one. I lounged here for several hours three different days. My son actually napped on the bed and I had the most enjoyable time reading a book, taking a dip in the pool etc. while he was ten feet away from me. We did order some sandwiches by the pool, the food was good. The cost of a virgin pina colada was about $9 so beware if you go with kids. Mine was too young so he just had a juice box with his meal.

The glass enclosed restaurant is lovely and delicious. We had fish tacos for lunch twice. Excellent.

I would highly recommend this hotel. I travel on business several times a year and consider the service here excellent.

I was not bothered by anyone about timeshares. I think if you just walk by and avoid eye contact, it is fine. I have heard they go after tourists but they didn't bother my husband or I either together or separately.

I did Swim with Dolphins on my 40th birthday at the aquarium. It was great. My family came to watch and I bought the video and photo.

The BEST restaurant we went to was near the Aquarium (2-3 stops on bus down from Hyatt) and it was a Thai restaurant. The decor was amazing - we basically say in a tree house on the water for dinner. Went there twice. The best. My son was flirting with the waitresses (he was 4) as they were very cute and from Thailand.

Can't wait to go back to Cancun and would definitely chose the Hyatt if given the opportunity.

Safe travels to all.

“Disappointing Stay”

Hyatt Cancun Caribe Resort

We stayed at the Hyatt Caribe from 19th Feb - 4th March. The hotel consists of 3 buildings, the main building, which is the original one, and 2 others which are newly built, the Regency Club, and the Premier which we booked and paid for in advance. Having read some reviews of the hotel, we phoned ahead to confirm that we were in the Premier, and so would be away from the disco noise that some reviewers mention. We were told our room would definitely be in the Premier building, which has direct access to the beach, and good sea views. It would have 2 double beds as there were no king size in that building. When we checked in we were told our room had a king size bed and was in the main building. We thought there was some mistake and explained to the check in clerk what we had been told. At this point she simply stated that the main building was the premier. This is simply not true. We were reluctant to accept the room, but did so as having travelled for 20 hours were very tired, and as it was late there did not seem to be anyone else on duty. We were further disappointed when we looked out at the view, to find that we were overlooking the flat roof and staircases of the Regency Club, and although we could see the sea, it was not a good view. The bathroom was small and shabby.
The following morning, with the help of our travel company representative we did get moved to the type of room we had paid for, but not without a battle! We were asked if we would accept a room in the main building with a better view, we were told that the new rooms only had a shower and no tub. We just had to keep insisting that we wanted to have what we had been promised, and had paid for.
Our new room in the Premier building was lovely. We had a beautiful view of the sea and the little beach below our room.It was worth getting up early to see the sunrise. We loved the swim up bar and new infinity pool which we were near. Whenever the weather was good enough, we rented one of the big four poster beds around it. They were more comfortable than the room beds. The staff at the bar were friendly and helpful.
We ate 3 times at the Blue Bayou, where the service was good.
What we did like was that if we just wanted a light meal in the evening, perhaps one course from their menu , we could order it and have it served in the adjacent bar. The 24 hour Cafe Sole was a bit of a disappointment, as many items were often not available. The staff there however always tried to help.
We were surprised that there was no lounge area, so nowhere to just sit in the evenings, other than the bar.
We did eventually get an apology from the front desk manager for what she described as 'the incident' when we checked in. We were sent a bowl of fruit, and given a voucher for one free breakfast each, which compensated us for the $40 difference in the price between the two rooms.
I see we are not alone in having found the reception staff unhelpful. Before we checked out my husband asked them if they could please change 5x twenty pesos notes for 1 x 100 note. Without even looking the young lady replied that she was sorry, they did not have any big notes. (100 pesos, approximately $10 or £5 )
Apart from reception, we found other staff , waiters, bellmen, pool attendants to be friendly and willing to help.
