We just returned from Hyatt Caribe on Easter Sunday 2008. I had read the recent reviews before our departure (3/15) and had my doubts on what we had gotten ourselves into. We were pleasantly surprised! We stayed in the hotel room for 1/2 our trip and then in the villa for the rest of our stay. We enjoyed BOTH! The shower in the villa was amazing! And we were right on the beach, so the view was spectacular! All hotel rooms face the ocean as well, so there isn't a "bad seat" in the house!
The service was GREAT! Everyone went out of their way to be of assistance, and we developed many friendships among the staff. I am convinced that people who complain about unfriendliness are undoubtedly that way themselves, no? The peacocks were a treat! We bought a loaf of Bimbo bread (don't you love that name?) and got them to eat out of our hand. Amazing birds. We delighted in the male's feather display and took many, many photos.
We found the facilities to be beautiful - marble floors, columns, etc. and everything was SO CLEAN. The staff is always busy and this was the cleanest place we've stayed in Mexico!
There are steps - and no other way into the hotel to check in. Consider that if you are bringing handicapped people with you. We brought my mom - nearly 80, and I was just recovering from surgery on a leg, so we were a sorry sight to start our trip. We have found this somewhat typical of many places we have stayed in Mexico - steps, steps, steps. We've even found that true for some high end restaurants in various parts of Mexico - and not always railings. That's just how things are done, nothing to complain about - after all you are in another country! Their codes are not like America, you know.
The pools were beautiful. The ocean was a gorgeous turquoise color, and couldn't have been prettier. The beach is cool at all times - sand is not silica (which absorbs the sun's heat) but very powdery fine coral shell (?) which stays cool. You do not need to run to the ocean or wear shoes to protect your feet from the heat.
The wind was unusual the week we were there. We heard the weather everywhere was odd. That happens at home, too, you know. We had 2 very windy days where we could not sit by the pools or the beach. In fact, we could hardly stand up outside! The rest of the stay was much calmer. Flags were always clearly visible to note the ocean swimming condition, and there was a lifeguard on duty during the days. (I have not seen this before, but it was comforting.)
The food was great! We ate mostly at the Cocay Cafe right there at the Hyatt. They had a different theme each evening - Caribbean, Asian, Italian, Mexican, etc. and they decorated daily according to the theme. Breakfast buffets varied a little each day also, so you didn't get bored with the exact same choices. Keep in mind we were there during their "high weeks' and the prices were high. $20 per person for the breakfast buffet and about $28 for the eve. buffet. We took a taxi out to eat once or twice, but by the time you pay round trip ($16 round trip) you mjight as well have stayed there. The food was great, the service excellent, and the convenience woth it!
The pathway areas should be repaired or replaced as it was very uneven and not great for walking from the room to the pool or beach. Again, keep this in mind if you are bringing elderly (I always held mom's hand as she walked with her cane.) or if you have small children, DON'T LET THEM RUN.
If you read negative remarks on this hotel, please remember there are always people who are never satisfied. I always feel you travel to a foreign country for a different experience. If you want to have everything the way you are used to at home, then stay at home. Right?
We loved the experience and would recommend the hotel and the villas.
Oh - the pool by the beds was awesome. There was a rim around one edge where they had lounge chairs, so you could be in the pool on a chair. Very clever.
There was a more than ample supply of lounge chairs around all the pools, so what I appreciated MOST was that we never had to get up at 4AM to save a spot like we've had to in other Mexico locations.
