This was the first non all-inclusive we've stayed at in Mexico so we didn't know quite what to expect. It cost about $700 less than an all-inclusive, so we thought we'd try it out. It didn't end up being much of a cost-saver after all. The restaurants/deli at the hotel were very pricey. We had lunch at La Concha our first day. I ordered a club sandwich and a coke and my husband ordered a hamburger and a Corona. The bill was $40. They ask if you want refills on the soft drinks - but they are not free. We had the breakfast buffet our last day and it was $32. We ordered two small strawberry dacquris at the pool-side bar and he gave us two larges instead and the bill was $20! $10 for one dacquri - ridiculous. Needless to say, we ate out the rest of the time. You can't bring any food or drink back to the room - not even bottled water or snacks. And, of course the bottled water at the hotel is expensive. I would suggest sticking with an all-inclusive unless you don't mind venturing out for every meal, snack, or drink.
There are two great restaurants across the street from the hotel - Limoncello and Lorenzillo's. You can also take a bus to the La Isla mall and there are several places to eat there. Warning about the bus - if you miss your stop, get off at the next one and walk. They do not circle back around. We made that mistake and were on the bus for about an hour and 30 minutes and had to get off one bus after the driver stopped at the end of his route and get on another to take us back.
The hotel was pretty clean. The pool area was nice, as was the beach. My only complaints about the room were the bed was not real comfortable and the pillows were awful. The sheets looked clean, but did not smell clean at all. It was pretty gross. And, the towels smelled like kerosene or some sort of gas. And, the blow dryer that was attached to the wall through a switchplate came out of the wall as I was using it.
Other misc. things - you have to pay $2 per day to rent the safe in the room. The prices at the hotel gift shop were very reasonable.
