we stayed at the caribe hyatt 1/20 to 1/24 /05- we had stayed their 18 years ago and not much has changed (maybe the sheets hopefully!)
great beach- i walked with my wife about a half mile each way north and south and the hyatts beach was by far the best.
waves were 3-5 feet a real blast but not recommended for small kids or scaredy cats- pool beautiful as well
food ok- blue bayou restaurant quite good- cafe cocay buffet dinner 25.50 per person- rip off!
i'm from milwaukee so heres a list of money saving tips-
you can walk to convenience stores for beer, snacks, soda, water, etc. about a twelve minute walk from hotel. previous posts suggest doormen hassle you for carrying stuff in- not true
take the bus- 65 pesos- super fast trip to anywhere in hotel zone and el centro
you can barter/bargain with the guys doing the water sports just north of the beach- not so if you set it up with the hotel.
most restaurants are expensive but try la casa das margaritas at the la isla mall- great food and fun atmosphere- live music, dancing-

previous posts complain about time share hasseling- i didn't see it at all except for a few polite "senor?- would you like some information?"- just say no thanks-
for a no hassle trip to and from airport we used cancun valet- excellent service
have fun
p.s. dont bother changing your US cash to pesos- 95% of merchants are happy to take cash- use a dollar when riding bus- they'll give you change in pesos

TELEPHONE CALL RIP OFF

The telephone in the room gives a two digit number, I believe it is is 66, to make a credit card telephone call. If you dial this two digit number someone comes on very promptly and takes your credit card number.

I made a telephone call to the United States of two minutes or less using this two digit number and got charged $41 by some thief in Tiajuana. I know the call was two minutes or less because the recorder that I left a message on limits messages to two minutes.

The normal fee would be about $3.00 and I expected a charge of maybe $10.00 which I was willing to pay rather than use a telephone card at a pay phone.

I am amazed that the Hyatt chain would particiapte in this type of theft from their customers. They will get their share of my $41. But they will never see me as a guest again in any of their facilities. WIth all of the emphasis on corporate ethics for a company to befraud a customer of even this small amount of money is outrageous and fraud is what this is because the fee was unconscionable.

We love this beautiful hotel

We stayed in one of the villa rooms at the Hyatt Caribe from Jan. 8-13 and had a wonderful time. This was the second visit to this hotel for my husband and I, and the first for our two kids, who are 6 and 3.
What I love about this hotel is that it doesn't look like a monstrosity jutting out from the sand, but is unobtrusive and fits into its surroundings beautifully. The natural, jutting cliffs on the beach blend into walkways and stairways paved in stone throughout the grounds, which are well-maintained and lovely.
The beach has separate, private coves, and you can choose to sit in the more populated area near the pool, or farther away in a secluded setting. There are plenty of comfortable chairs that the staff will bring onto the beach for you, if necessary.
If you stay in one of the villa rooms, you have access to a second small pool and jacuzzi outside of the Regency Club, from which you can look down onto the stunning ocean. Included with the Regency Club (which is basically an upgrade from a hotel room to a villa room) is a continental breakfast buffet each morning with fresh-squeezed juice, cereals, fruits, yogurts, baked goods and meats and cheeses. Then, each evening from 6 to 8 p.m. there are cocktails and hors d'oeuvres. We really liked having access to that.
The staff was friendly, and our rooms and the grounds and the pools were extremely clean. We were never even approached on this visit to listen to a time-share presentation as we let them know on our last trip that we were not interested.
Our kids had a ball frolicking in the waves (although they stayed very close to shore as the tide was strong) and playing in the sand.
We've made 5 or 6 previous trips to the Caribbean and Mexico, but this is our favorite destination. We came for rest and relaxation in a beautiful setting, and that's exactly what we got. We typically like visiting new places each trip and this is the first time we've gone back somewhere twice, but it looks like we'll be making our third visit to the Hyatt Caribe next year. If you like low-key, lovely places, give it a try. You just might find a place you'll cherish.

We stayed at the Hyatt Cancun Caribe the week before Christmas 2004. They upgraded our room for free, so we were in one of the villas right on the beach with a beautiful view. The room was clean, housekeeping each day. Our a.c. didn't work the first night, but they fixed it right away. All the staff we talked with were very friendly and helpful. Would highly recommend this hotel.

The only downside was that the restaurants in the hotel were very expensive. It is better to go into town for meals. We stocked up on bottled water and snacks in town, where these items were about a quarter of the price.

We have been going to Cancun for more than 20 years and usually stay in 4 and 5 star hotels. Although this is not a 5 star hotel, we liked this place and felt it was a good value. Here are my hits and misses. The hotel staff was polite and helpful. Our room was recently renovated. It was very clean, comfortable and everything worked; something you don't always find at the older hotels in Cancun. The pool was really nice, and big but I missed a swim up bar. The cement around the pool was little rough and somewhat uncomfortable to walk on in bare feet. There were plenty of chairs with shade by the pool. The beach was nice. Good surf. I like waves. There was a slight undertow during tide changes, but it was December and windy. This would be calmer in spring/summer season. No long walks on the beach though. The beach was isolated from the other hotels due to beach erosion. This too may change in spring/summer. The beach in front of the hotel was great and had no exposed rocks. The food was good at the restaurants but a little pricey. We really only ate either breakfast or lunch there and then went out for dinner. We saw the time share people but they didn't bother us. Maybe they can tell we have been saying no for 20 years?

We stayed here this trip because we were accompanied by another couple who's budget didn't allow a 5 star hotel, and since they had never been to Cancun before they trusted me to find the hotel. I wasn't too worried if the Hyatt didn't measure up to our expectations because we were only staying there for 3 days before we ventured south to an AI resort Playa Del Carmen for 7 days. This was the other couples honeymoon (second marriage for both, no big deal) and they had never been out of the US so we gave them their "Cancun orientation" and then cut them loose for their remaining 4 days. I choose the Hyatt because all rooms are ocean front and it has been recently renovated. And also for it's location on the hotel strip. Close to shopping and good dining and all the touristy stuff our first timers would want to see. I have to say, the Hyatt didn't disappoint me.

Over all I give this place 4 dots but for value I give it 5. I would stay there again. Here is a link to our pictures. http://bill-and-val.com look in photo gallery/ travel pics/ Cancun/ Hyatt Caribe
