we stayed at the caribe hyatt 1/20 to 1/24 /05- we had stayed their 18 years ago and not much has changed (maybe the sheets hopefully!)
great beach- i walked with my wife about a half mile each way north and south and the hyatts beach was by far the best.
waves were 3-5 feet a real blast but not recommended for small kids or scaredy cats- pool beautiful as well
food ok- blue bayou restaurant quite good- cafe cocay buffet dinner 25.50 per person- rip off!
i'm from milwaukee so heres a list of money saving tips-
you can walk to convenience stores for beer, snacks, soda, water, etc. about a twelve minute walk from hotel. previous posts suggest doormen hassle you for carrying stuff in- not true
take the bus- 65 pesos- super fast trip to anywhere in hotel zone and el centro
you can barter/bargain with the guys doing the water sports just north of the beach- not so if you set it up with the hotel.
most restaurants are expensive but try la casa das margaritas at the la isla mall- great food and fun atmosphere- live music, dancing-
previous posts complain about time share hasseling- i didn't see it at all except for a few polite "senor?- would you like some information?"- just say no thanks-
for a no hassle trip to and from airport we used cancun valet- excellent service
have fun
p.s. dont bother changing your US cash to pesos- 95% of merchants are happy to take cash- use a dollar when riding bus- they'll give you change in pesos
