My husband and I have just returned from one week (Feb 5 to Feb 13, 2005) in Cancun and one week in Merida. The Hyatt Caribe is a lovely, well kept older hotel built on an incredible white sand beach. The staff in all cases were friendly and very polite. Please remember, people, to be polite yourselves!!
We had a slight glitch upon arrival, but my husband did not scream and pound his fist on the counter. We were offered another (lovely) room in the hotel for the night and the next morning we were taken by golf cart to our room for the remainder of our stay.
We enjoyed having a very nice dinner in the Blue Bayou. The live Jazz band starts every evening at 8pm til 10:30 pm. Cafe Sol (open 24 hours) in the lobby carries a tasty selection of pastries, fresh made sandwiches and coffee. My personal favourite was the puff pastry with fresh fruit and sweet cream filling. The fresh made sandwiches were excellent 650 pesos ($6.50), and were more than big enough to share with my husband.
The hotel has a contingent of Royal Vacations personnel stationed in the lobby annex along with tour personnel. A polite "No Gracias Senora or Senor" was all that was needed to fend them off. This was not a big deal.
We had a lovely time at the Hyatt Caribe and look forward to our next stay.
Other places we tried while in Cancun: Casa de las Margaritas in the Isla Shopping Center for great dinner and live Mariachi Band.
The Plantation (within walking distance of the Hyatt). Get the hotel to make the reservation for a much better table. Great seafood. We sat at a table looking out over the bay. No shorts or T-shirts here. It is a little more pricey.
Maria Bonita (60 pesos cab ride from Hyatt Caribe). Very close to the Fiesta Americana. Very beautiful restaurant with delicious Mexican food. A little pricey. I did not wear shorts or T-shirt here. Get the hotel to make the reservation.
Carlos n Charlies in the Forum Shopping Centre. What a fun - shorts and tee shirt place with great food, great music. We had fun people watching.
Cambalache the Argentine Steak House in the Forum Shopping Centre. Pricey, wear something nice, great steak - huge steaks!!
Pat O'Briens - This is a Tshirt and shorts kind of place with great burgers, fries, shrimp, ribs. Great loud music and a big dance floor - so get out there.
Also, there are all kinds of markets within walking distance for water and snackies and beer.
Have fun in Cancun, please don't be rude and do not forget to tip
bye for now.
