If you are a thrifty traveler and want to be in the hotel zone (ie: you are not primarily traveling to experience Mexican or Mayan cultures) this may be the place for you.
Pros:
A couple of blocks off the hotel zone highway (literally)
On the lagoon - not the ocean, but a nice view.
Quiet pool and lounge area (no shallow pool area for kids)
Fridge, two burner stove, and sink that work.
Air Conditioning (although it was nice and breezy while we were there)
Friendly, helpful staff.
Cons:
Room lighting - which is not really that big of deal.
The pulsing beat of trance music coming from the discos across the lagoon from 10pm-ish to 7am-ish.
This would be an especially good deal if you are not extra-sensitive to rhythmic low tones that are a long distance away. When I read the reviews before we left, only a few people had mentioned anything about noise, so I wasn't too concerned. However it was annoying - some nights worse than others. If you don't mind ear plugs, that will probably solve the problem for most people. Personally, I like trance, just not while I'm trying to sleep.
If you are looking for a more off-the-beaten-path trip. Here is the advice I'm giving myself for my next trip to the Yucatan: fly into Cancun cheaply and book something anywhere but Cancun or the Hotel Zone. Pick up a travel book, read it, and choose your hotel based on what you want your experience to be.
