I'm 63 and went to Cancun by myself looking for a quiet, inexpensive, but unique hotel. Especially for the money, this fit my needs perfectly. I had a 4th floor room one unit away from the street but still had an amazing view of the pool, thatched roof restaurant, beautiful lagoon, and the high-rise hotel skyline in the distance. This hotel is surrounded by a small cluster of Mexico-high-end residences, some with boats moored at their private docks. Bus service is a half-block away and a few steps further is a good grocery store that can supply plenty of fruits and other breakfast and lunch staples you can use in your room. Next to the grocery are two sidewalk restaurants that serve a variety of breakfast dishes (about $3 with juice), generous sized sandwiches, and a variety of Mexican foods which are quite inexpensive. The restaurant at the hotel is superb. It draws both locals and guests of the high-price resorts looking for both excellent food and a gorgeous waterfront view in intimate surroundings. Most entreés are around $18-22 US and worth considerably more in a US establishment. I ate there three nights and each meal was outstanding.
I was greeted on arrival by a lady named Narda who is extremely friendly and eager to help you get the most out of your visit. However she apparently approaches each guest with a pretty persuasive invitation to attend a time-share presentation purported to last only 90 minutes. In exchange you get your choice of several area tours and a buffet breakfast before the presentation. As I was there for 7 days and could spare the better part of a morning, and since I'm always open for getting someting for almost nothing, I signed up. The facilities, a group of Sunset Resorts properties are impressive, but at least in part because Mexico has a law limiting solicitors to only a single chance at a prospective customer, the pressure can mount. Some guests I met walked out once the first 90 minutes were up. If you don't want to be exposed to this, tell Narda - if she's still there - that you're just not interested, be a bit firm, and I believe she will still be as cordial and helpful. If you are interested and like the property, be aware that Narda can get you back for a customer-initiated meeting with higher management so you can make a more reasoned decision and do some real negotiating.
In any event, I chose the most expensive excursion which would otherwise have cost $75: an all-day trip to the ruins of the Mayan seaport of Tulum and an afternoon at Xel Cha which is a gorgeous river mouth in which you can snorkel with provided equipment, eat and drink all you want at any of several restaurants and bars tucked in among the trees and mangroves surrounding the facility, and even (for an additional charge and probably with advance arrangements) swim with dolphins. If you go, walk to the upper end of the river mouth where it emerges from underground. It makes a nice drift trip downstream and the water is clearer for snorkeling. Lots of visitors never get that far and miss a whole dimension of the experience.
While in Cancun I walked a lot both day and night, rode the bus probably 10 times, walked to several nice beaches not more than 20 minutes from the hotel, read three books either on my balcony, by the pool, or once even on a park bench facing a mangrove-lined channel to the lagoon on my way walking to town. Had it not been so windy as to close the east-facing beaches, I would have spent more time in the water and on the sand.
My room was kept spotless, each day a fancy fold in the exposed end of the toilet paper roll, all 4 pillows from the two beds placed on the one I was using, no bugs, adequate kitchen facilities, very friendly and helpful staff, a firm bed (which I like, but others might find too hard), plenty of hot water, working elevator, and no bugs. Nothing fancy, mind you, but well worth the $60 per night I paid. The only flaw was a corner of the shower door entrance which hadn't been tiled and hence had discoloration from past mildew (nothing current). Having walked through several gorgeous high-rise hotels at 5 times the price, I still would go back to the Imperial Lagoon even at a 50% discount at the luxury spots. It was just comfortable for me and I could spend the savings on great food or other excursions.
