Just returned from an 8 night stay at the Barcelo Tucancun Beach. Overall it was a great stay and well worth the price paid. This is not a five star resort, however I was pleasantly surprised with the resort and found it to be much nicer than expected considering it was the least expensive all-inclusive deal in Cancun. Here is a breakdown of the check-in, rooms, food/drink, shows, pools, beach, spa and staff.

Price
2 adults. Paid $870 pp for 8 nights and flight from Providence RI. (Note if you book through Expedia, coupon code Entertain200 will give you $200 off a vacation of 6 or more nights)

Check-In
Arrived about 3 pm and there were a few people in line. The staff was great. I was helped by Paola, a trainee. I had booked a standard room (lagoon view). I tipped her $20 USD and requested a room with a balcony. I was upgraded to a 4th corner room in the South Tower with a balcony on two sides. It took them about an hour to prepare the room however we were immediately given bracelets to begin using the resort amenities.

Room
South tower rooms have the largest balconies, most are two sided (this is where I stayed). The center tower have very few balconies, ever for the ocean view rooms. Overall the room was nice. Two queen beds with pillow tops, 3 closets, an armoire with tv, desk, minifridge, iron, hairdryer, and modern bathroom with glass enclosed shower. Great sunset view of the lagoon over kulkukan plaza. Maid service was consistent and the minibar was always full. We requested that they fill with water, beer (modelo) and coke light. It was well stocked the entire trip. We did tip a few dollars each day for the maid and minibar.

Food
The food was ok. The buffet was pretty good the first night (Saturday), it was Italian themed and there were plenty of options. Every night there was a salad bar, vegetables, and several entrees from which to choose. Other nights such as chinese and seafood were a little sketchy although there was usually something that you could eat. Lunch was hot dogs, hamburgers, pizza, fries, chicken, salad, etc. Breakfast was the best option with plenty of fresh fruits, cereal, sausages, omlettes, fresh juices, croissants, etc. There are also 3 a la carte restaurants on site. La Claraboya (Seafood), Mexico Lindo (Mexican) and Don Quixote (Spanish). I tried La Claraboya and Don Quixote. Ordered a steak filet at Claraboya (not impressed) and a T-bone at Don Quixote (pretty good although service was slow). I did get sick (turista) one day however, I'm not sure if it was from eating/drinking at the Barcelo or something else (swallowing sea water, excursion to Xcaret the previous day).

Drink
The only beer on tap at the Barcelo is Corona which was ok with me. The well drinks were not bad although I pretty much stayed with beer and tequila shots. Try the Maya Riveria cocktail, a three colored mixed drink that has the colors of the mexican flag. You can upgrade to top shelf for a couple of dollars per drink. There are 3 pool bars and a lobby bar which is open late (says 7 am). It was easy to get drinks and we were able to get a table every night with quick service at the lobby bar. The crowd was young to mid aged with Canadians, Mid-westerners, Brits and Americans. People were generally friendly although there were a few obnoxious drunks. There are few slot machines in the lobby but for a better selection go across the street to the second floor of kulkukan plaza.

Shows
Only saw the Mayan show and tail-end of the 80's show. Both were very good. The Micheal Jackson impersonator was spot on and very entertaining.

Pools
There are 3 pools, all very clean but pretty cold. For most of our stay the pools were nearly empty. The ocean was definitely warmer than the pools. We found that if you went in the ocean first, the pool temp wasn't too bad. The swim up bar in the activity pool is mostly in the shade ans usually attracts the party people.

Beach
It was red flagged the entire week with big waves, there was a lifeguard who would let you go in a small section as long as you didn't go out too far. We went in everyday, the water was warm, beautiful and amazingly blue. The waves were fun for us however not good swimming or younger children. The beach itself is significantly eroded with 10-30ft from the wall to the water (at night, the waves were hitting the wall). We did go to Isla Mujeres and spent the day at Playa Norte. The water was very calm and better for swimming (take the bus to Playa Tortuga and it costs $15 r/t to the island via high speed catamaran).

Spa
Paid $70 for a "relaxation massage". Was supposed to be an hour but ended up being more like 45 minutes. It was ok, but you may want to try out the spa at a nicer resort (the Ritz is a short walk down the beach)

Staff
Everyone was extremely friendly and attentive during our entire stay. We did tip our servers, maid and mini-bar, and received great service. However, I believe that the staff was sincerely friendly and did not provide better service when tipped.

Summary
The hotel was in great condition, the staff was friendly and it was well located (across from mall, 5 min bus ride to the restaurants/clubs). The food was fair and drinks were plenty. Easy to book excursions (in the lobby, by Mexico Lindo, or by the pool). Shows were excellent. Considering the price we paid, I consider the Barcelo an excellent value and would go back. Enjoy your trip!

Food was terrible. Buffet style food that looked old and lacked flavor. The drinks were cheap and bland. Vodka and rum were bottom of the barrel quality. Long lines just to get seated to eat at the buffet and terrible service from the front desk. Windows only open about 6 inches because of liability issues. Used to be a big party hotel for spring break. Pools okay and nice view. But overall very pathetic. Food poisoning is very common so pick wisely what you eat. We ended up eating out instead.

My daughter and I just returned from 4 nights at the Barcelo Tucancun All-Inclusive Hotel. I had read numerous reviews prior to leaving and frankly was a liitle leery. However, we were pleasantly surprised with an oceanfront room which was very clean and bright. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful with the exception of the front desk personnel. I am not sure why they only have 1-2 people working at the desk at any given time. There was always a long line with people making dinner reservations, checking in/out and paying for purchases from the gift shop. I found them to be surly and curt.
The pools are very nice and the food was par for a 3 star all-inclusive. The beach was almost non-existent due to erosion but still very beautiful. If you are looking for basic food, warm sun and clean rooms and grounds this hotel will be fine for you.

The hotel is one of the last hotels on that part of the cancun peninsula. There is no beach left post-hurricane, the pictures are deceiving and pre-hurricane. The pictures suggest a good hundred yards of beach before the ocean, that is all gone. It is a 15-20' retaining wall with steps down. When the tide is out there is roughly ten feet of steep beach. The hotels on either side of it are boarded up and there are squatters living in one of them.

The hotel is nice, clean and the staff are very nice. The food is mediocre at best. I would not recommend staying on the first 3 floors - there is a disco on the ground floor and it is loud.

It was sunny and cheap - 500/person rt airfare from the NE included.

  • Liked — the accomadation was clean and great
  • Disliked — the disco downstairs could be very loud

This was me and my boyfriend’s first trip so we were advised to go to Cancun because it's very modern and very easy to navigate around for inexperienced travelers.

We originally decided on the Palms Oasis Beach Resort in Cancun but due to an error on our travel agents behalf we were not able to stay there because of our age. Apparently a lot of the hotels and resorts in Cancun have a new very strict policy about students on spring break. My boyfriend and I aren't students however we're 22 years old and the rules are "No students or youths between the ages of 18 and 24". There was no getting around this even when the travel agent told them we were married! Since we had booked with Sunquest Vacations there was no way we could get a refund and look for another vacation package. We were then given the choice between what looked like a retirement home in the Maya Riviera or the Barceló Tucancun Beach in Cancun so we chose the Barceló.

The Barceló Tucancun Beach was very clean and the open concept of the lobby was very inviting. Our room was very nice with a balcony overlooking the giant mall in front of us even though they called it a lagoon view. We were also suppose to have a king sized bed but instead had two doubles.

The staff at the Barceló worked around the clock and we're very friendly. The service was very good at the buffet and at all the bars. The food was ok, nothing spectacular at the Buffet.

The Barceló also had three A La Carte resturants... Spanish food, Mexican and seafood. We tried making reservations but the time slots went fast and had to be in before 2pm so if you don't want to wait until 9pm to eat dinner then you should book days in advance! We didn't eat at any of the restaurants due to this and also because of my allergy to shrimp and because of health issues...

My boyfriend ended up with food poisoning our last night there. We weren't exactly sure what it was from but he was very sick!
He'd also had a tooth ache and was in a lot of pain the last few nights. Our last night there we'd gone through our 2 bottles of water they provide us in the mini fridge because my boyfriend was sick. When I asked for more water they told me to go down to the front desk. When I got down there the guy gave me one bottle and when I asked him for a second one he looked at me like I had three heads and proceeded to ask me what we did with the two we were given. I tried to explain that my boyfriend was really sick and he gave me a lecture about how only two bottles come with our package. I was so outraged and furious that I shouted and said that's fine and stormed off! I couldn't believe a bottle of water there was made of gold apparently! So my very sick boyfriend and I had to ration off of one bottle of water the rest of the night and next morning and when you're told not to drink the tap water in Mexico that becomes a little difficult. Water is only the number one basic necessity of human life!

On top of this incident, we were also skipped for house keeping a couple days and had to call down for clean towels and toilet paper. You were also not allowed to bring any food up to your hotel room from the buffet if you didn't feel up to dinning in, and there was almost always a long line up to get in for dinner.

We were told that The Barceló Tucancun Beach was a four star resort from both our travel agent and by Sunquest but even though we are by no means seasoned travelers we knew there was no way it was more than 3 stars. I say that because my mom and sister were in Cancun for two weeks just before we arrived and they even got room service free of extra charge at their four start resort. At the Barceló it was 40 pesos just for the service and the prices of food weren't listed. We ended up having pizza delivered to our hotel.

Our stay wasn't all bad; the pools even though they weren't heated were still very clean and well maintained. The pool side bars were excellent and the two shows that we went to were fairly entertaining. However it wasn’t enough to make us want to stay there again.

  • Liked — The pools and the ocean and soaking up the sun with a pina colada in hand
  • Disliked — The front desk personal and lack of food varity
