I was starting to get a bit worried about going to the Tucancun after some of the reports on this site. However, we had an excellent holiday - absolutely loved it. We had a room in the north tower and did not have an ocean view as we are students and had saved hard enough for the flight and hotel as it was! We ended up having a view of the back of the shopping centre but weren't bothered because we were never in the room anyway.

The room was MASSIVE, great big TV, no remote but so what? you can get one from reception if u really want one. We had 2 double beds, a bit hard but nothing too noticeable if i hadn't of read it on here before sleeping in one. The maid service was excellent - they gave us towels everyday and picked all my clothes off the floor!

The food....breakfast - brilliant, eggs, sausage, fruit, hash brown, AMAZING bacon, pancakes, rolls, muffins, croissants, cereal etc
Lunch - sometimes went in to the restaurant for lunch but was a bit too much for lunch - things like chicken etc which i dont' normally eat at lunch. Dinner - the mexican restaurant was lovely and we enjoyed steaks and chicken in there. The other two restaurants are average but what I would expect from a 3* AI hotel. We ended up eating out 7 nights out of 14 which I knew we would end up doing bcoz i like eating out and having a wide variety on the menu.

The entertainment is good - karaoke on the saturday is a good laugh!

Went to Xcaret, wet n wild, dolphin discovery and jungle tour. Jungle tour - absolutely petrified on my speed boat - the engine cut out and no one noticed we had gone :( coral reef is amazing however.

Back to the tucancun, the staff were working hard all the time, always saying hello. Staff at front desk can come across as rude but i think the language barrier is the problem. No hairdryers & lack of sockets beside mirror in bedrooms??? confused by that but only a minor prob - had my own dryer anyway. Have to pay for safe but i've paid for every safe in my hotel rooms on every holiday so no big deal.

All in all, great time, lovely views of the carribean sea. I would definately return. Would have liked better food, but didn't expect 5* quality anyway!

There were 3 couples that went to this hotel, and we were all very disappointed. The people behind the front desk were very rude, and could have cared lesss that one couple with us didnot get the balcony room they had paid for. We were told the first night no keys were available for the safes in the rooms. Two days later, one key was available but the price was $3 a day! How can you advertise safes in the rooms, then charge for the key? There was no water in the room. you had to buy it acroos the street. There was supposed to be hairdryers in the rooms . The fifth day, I got a hairdryer. The hotel was clean, but none of the staff were friendly, seemed like they could care less if any one was there or not. The drinks were good! tThe food was the same thing over and over. You are only allowed to eat in their "fancy Mexican" restaurant one time the whole week. We had better Mexican food at home at Tequila's. The entertainment was very bad. No disco or anything every night. To get to do something at night you have to take the bus down the strip.
The young guys at the pool spent all their time trying to pick up young girls insteads of entertaining or running activities. This is fine on their time, not when they are supossed to be in charge of activities. The music by the pool was in Latin and very very loud. after the second day very few people were at the pool bar because no one wanted to listen to spanish music. they made us be outside the hotel to go the the airport at 7 am, even when our plane did not leave until !:00. Bad service.

We will never go there again, As we were waiting to get on the plane, people all around us were talking about the horrible hotel they stayed at. I asked where they stayed. It was the Tucancun! So it wasn't just us.

I am NEW to trip advisor - hence the reason this report is a smidge late!.

This was my 2nd time in Cancun, & we had previously stayed at the Jack Tar Village, & boy do I wish we had again!.
We paid a LOT extra for a sea view, & got a shoe box on the top floor. This would have been ok, if the weather was always dry & no wind. If it rained, you'd come back to find your room flooded - I may as well have slept in the pool!. We went to the front desk to complain on several occasions (Short, sharp, bursts of rain are not uncommon!), & they promised to send someone up to rectify the problem - which was to send up the maid, with lot of towels for US to soak up the mess with..... I kid you not. Well, after the 3rd or 4th time, I had had enough. I marched down to the reception & demanded to speak to the manager, & plonked ALL the sodden towels on his desk. They then decided we had 'suffered enough' & moved us to a Villa on the beach...but wanted us to pay for the privallage. After a 'small debate' they upgraded us free.
The 2nd problem was the attitude of some of the activities staff. One afternoon whilst minding my own business in the pool, a 'cockatail making' demonstration was taking place at the bar. I am, I admit 'Over Weight'...however..... I DO NOT expect to have insults thrown at me by activities staff - so, as you could imagine, I was not best pleased when a member of the team shouted ''Hey Mister Chubby..Come over here''. I was outraged. I dare say the person concerned was highly amused, I however was deeply upset & insulted. I go on Holiday/Vacation to relax..not have crap rammed down my throat - by some kid who thinks he's a star!.
The shows in the Theatre?. Why do we have to be told to clap?. I will clap as & when I choose, not because some member of staff tells me to.

The food? Average at best. Drinks?. Good range.

The villa was lovely when we moved - but it wouldn't encourage me to ever go back!

If anyone has been put off by some reviews, let me put your mind at rest. This is MY opinon and everyone one has their own.

THE STAFF - Fantastic. From the cleaners upwards. They all said "Hola" in a morning or around the pool. They all made you feel very welcome any little problems were soon sorted i.e having no TV remote, blocked room toilet.

Everyday I saw them cleaning around the hotel, mopping floors, doing the windows or sorting out the gardens.

THE FOOD - The food was good to very good IMO. I'm sure the food was still as nice, but after 14 days there you just get fed up of eating and drinking :)

We usually ate Breakfast and dinner at El Café, mainly because of its location. Breakfast was always welcome -- fruits, cereals, toast, sausages, eggs (however you like them), bacon, hash browns, scrambled eggs (with different added extras) pancakes, english (cooked) sandwiches (ham/cheese) and french toast. A great start to the day :)

Lunch at the "snack bar" near the pool had Hotdogs, hamburgers, fries, pizza, salad, chicken nuggets, pork chops, bread. ice creame. not a great choice, but enough for a light snack.

Dinner - Various meats usually pork, fish, beef always had rice done slighty different every evening, pasta, salad. some evenings we had what I would say was Oriental food Beef with oyster sauce, pork done in a chinese stlye.

THE ROOMs - We was in the North tower with a ocean view on the 4th floor 4042. Nice big room with two double beds, fantasic view that will be with me for ever!!. It just needed a small fridge and coffee mking facilities and it would have been 10 out of 10 instead of 9.
The noise levels wasn't as bad as I feared, although the odd noise from banging doors or laughing in the corridor could be heard, which is what you would expect from a "party town" and they are on their hols too

POOL BARS - Hard working staff kept the drinks flowing through the day for the sunbathers. There is still a "swim up" bar in the "activity pool" we usually stayed at the big quiet pool area. The beds usually had towels on the shady areas by 7.30am, although it does say "no reserving of sunbeds"

Tip - Get at least 2 free towels per person, more if they'll let you :) and use them as padding because the sunbeds arn't very comfortable.

The Ocean - Please be very careful if you fancy a dip, the underwater current is very strong. You can feel the water pull you back into the sea (even when you are standing). we only saw the amber flag (swimming for good swimmers only) a couple of times. Most of the time it was Red flags (Dangerous) - The lifeguard is on duty between 9am-5pm - they did a great job blowing his whistle to warn swimmers/paddlers to move closer in or futher down.

We just returned from 7 nights at the Barcelo Tucancun Beach. The property was nice with a very pretty beach. All of the employees were nice and helpful.
FOOD- The food at the buffet was ok, plenty of fruit and no one in our group was sick. The Italian Restaurant was ok, somewhat bland. The Mexican Restaurant was excellent as was the service. With the low price of the hotel
we ate a few meals out. We enjoyed the grill lunch better than the buffet.
ROOM- OK and yes the bed was hard, but very comfortable. The room needed a small refrigerator to store water and sodas. We are early risers and became pretty thirsty by 10:00 when the bars open. We wanted a king size bed and paid $30 per day for oceanfront (the only king left was oceanfront). The view is incredible, so I'm glad we did. There was mold on the ceiling that might be a problem with someone with allergies. In-room safe charge of 2.40 per day and no remote for the TV but we saw people turning them in when they left,so they may have had a charge for them as
well.
HOTEL- 3 pools and plenty of chairs and towels. The swim up bar boarded up, but others available. We stayed at the beach most days. There were about 8 umbrellas you could claim for the day if you were there early. Plenty of showers coming from the beach. No non-motorized watersports that we could find. There were some boogie boards set up on the beach but they were for rent. We were given no info about the hotel when we checked in, restaurant times or where things were, which would have been nice. We had to ask for everything (in room safe, voucher for Mexican restaurant, restaurant schedules). Would we stay there again...probably not. The places we have stayed in the past were better and no more expensive.
If you have any questions, please contact me.
