When we were there: 26 June 04 to 03 July 04
Our Party: 2 Adults / 3 Children (10, 8, and 5)
Airport Transfers
The airport was a zoo. My recommendation is to have the video tape rolling as you step outside the airport terminal because it’s a strange sight not often seen.
The (bluebaycancun) web site provided for reserving the free shuttle didn’t work so we shelled out 400 pesos to get to the hotel. We read in the reviews that the cab drivers are likely to take you to the sister hotel (Blue Bay Gateway) instead of the Blue Bay Club and sure enough that was the case for us too. Perhaps an early indication that you are going to get the same ‘island tour’ is if your driver heads towards the hotel district instead of jumping on the main highway that takes you directly to Puerto Juarez Punta Sam. This caused a lot of initial tension as the drivers’ English was not very good and we couldn’t speak Spanish.
One other word of advice, the tourist information booths at the airport will try to get you to commit to visiting a time share and leave them a deposit to guarantee you will actually show up during your scheduled tour. I’ve always been skeptical of anything that is supposed to be free but you must pay for to get (or in this case – you are suppose to receive compensation for your time). We heard that some of these groups really take advantage of the tourists once they have you at their property so please be careful.
Restaurants
The food was very good with an ample range of selections. Deserts could have been better but everyone liked the ice cream.
Ostras and Oysters – We ate at this restaurant three nights (the maximum allowed). The facility provides beautiful views of the marina. We found the selections to be noticeably better and the restaurant provided two menus (one for RCI and one for all others). The restaurant was kind enough to allow us to mix-and-match items from both menus to build that perfect meal. The service was very good.
We were pleasantly surprised that our children were allowed to join us for dinner. Considering their age and the fact that we were not charged any ‘all-inclusive’ fees for the kids we felt this was exceptionally generous of the Blue Bay.
On the down side, wine was not included but could be purchased by the bottle. Two of the three nights we ate there they were out of lobster. I’d be whining to say this really mattered to us though.
Nachos Snack Bar – As the name implies, snacks. We recommend caution be exercised in snack selection by late afternoon. Some of the selections (while on ice) were out for several hours and the heat had begun to take its toll. I got sick one day and my best guess was some calamari I ate there in the late afternoon.
El Palmer – The main restaurant. Somehow we always managed to get a seat overlooking the ocean without really trying. The food was good and varied. Breakfast might have been the best meal there each day.
Theater – Provided a show and Mexican buffet every other night. The food was at least as good as El Palmer (maybe a little better). Bring mosquito repellant and a fan to cool yourself. We were disappointed that the hotel store ran out of repellant and never restocked it for the full week we were there.
Bars
I found the drinks to be stronger at the ‘sister’ hotel and if you’re a RCI member you had to almost always specifically ask for the ‘premium’ brands when ordering. ‘Premium’ included brands such as Smirnoff, Bacardi, and Beefeaters. Don’t expect much more unless you want to buy a bottle of good wine at Ostras and Oysters.
Our favorite drink was the Blue Bay.
Pool Bar – This was the defacto main bar as most people on the beach or around the pool flocked here. There was a swim-up bar in the pool but it wasn’t open – not sure why and we didn’t bother to ask.
Lobby Bar – Provided a relaxing environment overlooking the pool and ocean.
Theater Bar – The theater provided waiters so they ran to the bar throughout dinner and the show. This added benefit made for a relaxing and fun evening out with the family.
The Beach
Ample chairs and lots of places to find shade from the sun. There was far too much seaweed for our taste though. If you look at any of the photographs on the web sites or at Bluebaypremier.com you wouldn’t know this until you got there.
The Unit
We stayed in a two bedroom / two bath suite with a full kitchen overlooking the marina. The kitchen was not necessary and the in room coffee was pretty bland. The units don’t offer central air so it got real noisy with three air conditioners humming away all day. We opted to turn off the air conditioners (and use the ceiling fans) in the bedrooms at night just to reduce the noise. A TV and phone in the living room would have been a plus. Despite all of this, the units were more than ample and were all beach front (for RCI members). There is a separate building across the street (not on the beach) – I’m not sure how some people managed to draw the ‘short straw’ and get stuck over there.
The TV offered HBO and Cinamax along with programming in English, German, and Spanish - but who comes to Mexico to watch TV?
To be reached from the US or Canada, the hotel provided this number: 877-693-3996
Additional Benefits
Ilsa Mujeres – Everyone had a great time. We were all surprised the hotel included this tour in their all-inclusive package. Again, the Blue Bay showed its generosity by allowing our children to attend the island tour at no cost. FYI – the tour retails for $89.00 USD each.
Relaxing Massage – Difficult to find fault in something that was free (or included) but we thought the massages would be available on site only to discover that we needed to go to the sister hotel (BBG) to enjoy this benefit. The other hotel is all adult and we had small children so we opted to combine the two 26 minute massages and only one of us went. The jacuzzis and game rooms were also located at the sister resort.
Bus to Sister Resort – Approximately a twenty minute ride. The bus was not air conditioned so it got really hot waiting at the traffic lights. Check the schedule before you venture out – the bus runs no more than once an hour between the two hotels. The bus was free for guest to move between the two resorts.
Kayaks, Windsurfing, Catamaran – The staff was very helpful in not only explaining how to use the equipment but in also providing free lessons. How convenient it was to have the equipment right there.
Kids Club – By far one of the top two best benefits of the all inclusive. Our two youngest went four days and came back with big smiles each day. Activities were varied and included lunch.
Shows – We saw three shows in the theater during our stay: Chicago, a Mexican show, and a Celebrity Impersonator show. Even though they weren’t Broadway and they were lip syncing we all still had a really great time. The shows last approximately one hour. You might recognize the performers if you look close – they’re the same wonderful staff that caters to you every need during the day.
Laundry – The hotel provides a single washer and dryer. Change was difficult to come by but we managed to get the required ten 5 peso coins from the hotel store.
Maid Service – Provided daily. A big plus.
