Just arrived back from a 2 week stay at the Blue Bay Club and was pleasantly suprised after reading some of these reviews! I was a little bit mislead as to the location of the hotel as it's about a twenty minute drive into central Cancun. However, there's a shuttle bus from the hotel which costs about 30p each way so it was easy and cheap to get to. If you're going for the Cancun nightlife the animation team at the hotel do a good job to make sure you have a great time. For a set price (between $25 - 50) they will take you to all the clubs and provide you with wristbands for your entrance and drinks. The only downside was making your own way home which was about $15/20 in a taxi, but between a few of you it's nothing.
The hotel itself was nice, clean and comfortable. The pool area was lovely, with a swim up bar and built in whirlpools and there was always lots going on during the day to cater for everyone. These included water and beach volleyball, quizzes, bingo, basketball and paper plane contests to name a few. All the staff work really hard to ensure you have a great time.
The downside to this hotel was the food. It was bland and repetitive and they had a very small selection. If you're not a fussy eater you'll be fine, but I found myself eating at the snack bar a lot during the day because there was little that I liked at lunch and dinner. The snack bar is lovely but I couldn't eat there every day. They do nachos, cheeseburgers, chicken, pizza etc which is all lovely but again it gets a bit repetitive. However, the a la carte restaurant was amazing so If you have vouchers to go I would say definately use them!
The beach was nice. White sands and the water was clear but there was a LOT of seaweed so if you don't like it then go over to Isla Mujeres for the day because it's the most beautiful beach I have ever seen! We went on yellow Ultramar ferries from the port just down the road. It's only $7 return in comparison to $70 to go there on a tour. The only thing different is they give you a snorkel and some food. Not worth ten times the price when you can go there much cheaper for yourself.
If you're looking for a lively holiday I would definately recommend going on the booze cruise organised through the hotel. It was $50 and they take you to Temptation Resort where you take a boat through the lagoon at sunset. It's an open bar and they have music and games on board. Then they take you to a restaurant/bar called Carlos and Charlies which is a must-visit if you're in Cancun. After that they will provide your entrance into the City nightclub which was a fantastic place.
Overall I would recommend this hotel to people of all ages. It's nice and relaxed in the day with the option of activities if you're interested and the evenings are the same, with Cancun only a short taxi ride away for those that want to party.
