My husband is 24 and I am 22. We're not big partiers but, like everyone else, I had come on here to find out if the Grand Oasis would turn out to be a good honeymoon destination. My husband's brother and wife strongly recommended the hotel to us as they had been there twice before. Like you've probably heard, most reviews were negative, some positivity scattered here and there. For our honeymoon overall, this hotel was just so-so: nothing super impressive, nothing super terrible.
We purchased an all-inclusive plan through Apple Vacations which worked out great. As soon as Apple Vacations got us to the hotel, we were greeted by the bellmen who gave us a ticket so they could hold on to our luggage as we checked in and got into our room. Check-in was no hassle whatsoever. We showed the check-in girl our confirmation papers, she got us our black wristbands, gave us a map of the hotel grounds and restaurant locations, then called someone to check if our room was ready - which it was. We paid (before we got to MX) for an upgrade to a Grand Oceanfront Room through Apple Vacations- which we got. FYI: For those of you sensitive to heat, I would NOT recommend going to Mexico between May and August. The main lobby of this hotel is NOT are conditioned. They have ceiling fans going but they just moved around the hot and very humid air.
Our room was nice and cool when we got in. Ordered room service right away which took only about 20 minutes, but we brought TONS of $1 bills to tip which I STRONGLY recommend doing. Every hotel staff member was friendly, we left dollar bills in the mini-fridge to get extra beer and water restocked everyday. We also left tips for the maids. There are TWO separate people who clean and restock your room! Leave a tip for the maid, then leave a tip in the mini-fridge for the person who comes and restocks your fridge so each person gets their tip.
The restaurants were so-so. We ate at the VIP lounge for breakfast which offered little pastries and jam. Also ate at Sarrape, the Ibiza Lounge (which I would NOT recommend), Tunkul Rodizzio, Tunkul, and Dos Lunas. Tunkul Rodizzio will fill you up! They bring around tons of meat on skewers: Lamb, Beef, Sausage, Turkey wrapped in Bacon, Beef Kabobs, etc. Dos Lunas and Room service, we found, had the most american food down there.
Pool and Carribean Sea view was OUTSTANDING. We ordered drinks at the swim-up bars whenever we wanted w/o paying because of our all-inclusive black wristbands we had already payed up front. The portion of the pool near the Phase 2 buildings was more of the party area, while the portion of the pool near the Phase 1 buildings was more of a kid/family area. We hung out toward the middle in between the Sarrape and Ibiza restaurants which seemed to be more of a couples area - until they opened the swim up bar.
We set up parasailing through our Apple Vacations representative at the hotel located near Phase 2. Ran us about $50/person. Headed down to the beach the next day near Phase 1. The Parasailing company used jet skiis to get us out to the boat and bring us back to shore. This was definitely worth the money! Very peaceful up there and good private time for you and your significant other : )
If you're just planning on sitting by the pool and sea and not really leaving the hotel, 5 days in Cancun is plenty! We booked 7 days and actually ended up leaving early. Not because of service or food, but because you can really only lay around by the pool in the 95 degree heat and humidity for so long, especially at this time of year.
Aside from the hotel, be prepared for customs coming INTO Mexico. After we got our bags, it took us 1 hour and a half to get through customs! Took forever! Maybe it'll go better for you :) We could've just hit the airport rush hour :)
My husband loved the resort, loved the drinks, thought the food was so-so and said he would recommend this hotel but would love to come back with a group of friends as a couples trip. I think MX would have been a lot more enjoyable if you don't go during the summer, but then again I am sensitive to the heat and humidity.
