We got taken in by their timeshare spiel. It was our stupid mistake, and we should have known better. We're still paying down the contract as it was too much of a hassle to get out of it. They're very persuasive and persistent. In the end, we'll be out the price of a nicely equipped, new S40 Volvo! Don't let your memory of Cancun be marred by a dumb mistake!

Check-in was quick and easy. Gave up credit card and got bracelets. Drinks were ordered for us while we sat down with the "Here's what's included" Lady. All-inclusive package explained to our satisfaction in about 5 minutes. Offered a time-share presentation. Politely declined. Offered to us again with about $4-500.00 in freebies. Politely declined. No hard hassle.

Signed up for free snorkel tour. Signed up for horseback ride. Snorkeling very very very bad. Although we had lots of fun with the little speed boats.

Horseback riding was excellent. Quality mounts with great guides. Got to check out some horse royalty at the hacienda. The lunch provided was pretty good. Got to gallop around, helmets optional, didn't have to plod along single file. Highly recommended!

Room given to us was better than what we exchanged for .Bld. 1 bottom floor, great view, very clean, comfortable, large showers, hot water, great water pressure. Mini bar in room. No additional charge. Left note to stock with 12 pak of beer daily. No problem.

Staff friendly, housekeeping excellent, resort grounds clean and manicured, room service included for no extra fee, buffet decent, something for everyone, Italian restaurant very good, lobster dinner not so very good at same restaurant.

Hammocks to lounge in. Plenty of lawn chairs with shade and pads. Nice jacuzzi right up next to lagoon by snack bar. Snack bar has good food, great view.

Pool is a little small. split in 2 sections. Slide to lower level with water volleyball. Upper portion has a swim up bar (with way to many children on their floaties next to mommy and daddy) Sometimes it was really hard to get to the bar. Pool closes at 9:00 pm but the pool bar closes at 4:00. Makes no sense to me.

Free boat ride to sister resort. Leaves about every 20-30 minutes until 4:00. Otherwise free shuttle bus on the hour until 9PM. Royal Sunset pretty happening. Nice beach area. A few vendors. People drinking 2 liter bottles of beer from beer bongs. Way Cool. Didn't have to order drinks from Jauquin(best waiter). He just brought a round every 20 minutes or so. Didn't eat there, but heard the food is better.

We have 3 timeshares and travel alot so we're kinda biased and rate resorts a little harder than we used too. We could probably nit pick about some little minor things but nothing major. We really loved our stay here.

I stayed at Sunset Lagoon throught RCI in December of 2007. The check-in was uneventful except there was already a woman complaining about her room.

We were promised through RCI accomodations for four people. I can honestly say that room was built for two! The room had two levels the bathroom and mini kitchen are upstairs and the bed and nasty pull-out couch was downstairs. The pull out couch was dingy and dirty. It waw not a typical pull out. It was like a convertible futon. The unit was in need of a serious makover. It was very old and very unappealing. The shower was completely broken and it took days to get it repaired. We had absolutely no shower for two entire days!

The most comical part of the experience is that they actually had the audacity to try to sell me a unit at this place. Even after I explained to them how bad our unit was. I called the front desk several times and complained about the shower situation. They eventually got to it but, were not even apologetic about it. They just did not care! The only redeeming quality about this place was the occaisional night entertainment. I caught a show a couple of times and they were quite good. Needless to say, we spent a lot of time away from the resort adn made the best of our vacation in spite of the Sunset Lagoon.

“Very Nice Bayside Hotel, avoid the timeshare people”

Sunset Lagoon Resort Hotel & Marina

Apr 25, 2008

We signed up for a week all-inclusive at Lagoon without knowing what to expect, so I was pleasantly surprised. In my opinion, the hotel is very nice and they are doing an excellent job with maintenance and upkeep. This bayside hotel has a villa atmosphere, with open courtyards leading to the rooms, and long winding custom staircases leading to the upper rooms. It seemed to be protected from the wind better than the oceanfront hotels. We were there during a windy week in March, so I thought we were very fortunate to be at Lagoon.

Our room was a studio with ample space for four people. A comfortable pullout sofa made the stay a little easier. One downside is that the rooms seem to have a swampy odor that bothered my wife more than me. I'm not sure where the smell was coming from. Other rooms confirmed they had the same smell. The smell didn't bother me. I think its part of the air conditioning.

The staff was courteous and helpful. My wife and I brought our two small children (2 and 5) and I really felt we were treated like VIPs b/c we had the kids. Every meal and every day at the pool the Lagoon staff worked hard to make a stay a pleasurable as they could. The woman in charge of daytime entertainment for the kids, Malyna, did a fantastic job gaining our kids trust and keeping them occupied during pooltime.

The food at Lagoon was excellent. Meals were served buffet style so I would not give the dining service a "5 star" rating, but if you appreciate good cooking you will love this food. They attempt a different international theme for each night's meal, and they did well. Whether they called it french night or american night, the food still retained a traditional mexican twist, and traditional mexican dishes were available for each meal. I over-ate consistently, and I over drank too. Beer, wine and rail drinks are included! I got my money's worth. The bartender in the lounge area at night, Leonardo, makes the resorts best Margerita on the rocks with salt. I would go out of my way to get drinks from Leonardo.

I will never forget the Lagoon breakfast buffet. They feature five different kinds of excellent fruit juice, unlike anything I've seen before. They had fresh fruit every morning, and some great fruit too. I loved their red grapefruit, overindulged every morning.

The main dining is open air. You are under a roof, but no walls or glass facing the water. Routinely black birds would be perched on neighboring tables. Definitely added a sense of wildness to the very secure resort.

One solid recommendation I will make to all: use a strategic tipping plan. Find the best servers and tip them well. They will come back. Tip your housekeeper everyday. When someone makes a good drink for you, or does anything that makes you happy, tip them well. They really appreciate it, and it keeps them coming back to you. In my opinion, dropping 200 pesos for good meal service early in the week is money well spent.

Lagoon featured some kind of dinner show at their amphitheatre most nights. The kids really seemed to enjoy those dinner shows, which had some excellent dancing, singing, and comedy. The shows highlighted my main complaint about the resort. The stage performers propagated consistent anti-american sentiments. I think Lagoon would be better to tone that down.

We enjoyed the sister hotel, Royal, our first two days in Cancun. The bus service to Royal was prompt and easy. The Royal also had good food and beverages, also part of our all-inclusive rate. We had some excellent service at Royal. Our 2 yr old daughter fell asleep in the dining room and the staff pushed chairs together for her to sleep on, and treated us like royalty.

While our daughter slept, we listened in on a timeshare negotiation at a neighboring table. As trained govt negotiators, my wife and I both believe Americans should avoid these deals. If you could secure a legit deal from a legit broker in the US, it might be worth buying a membership to Sunset, because these are very good hotels. The negotiation we overheard had an unpleasant sound, and the brokers must have wheeled in five different "managers" like some kind of car deal on steroids.

We wisely passed on all overtures to take the "90 minute" tours or spend any time with the time share people. The sunset brokers were very aggressive when we arrived, but they seemed to have specific orders to back off if customers declined twice, which we did.

To conclude on a positive note, Sunset offered a very good offshore fishing trip deal that was $150 for me and free for my 5 yr old. I caught a 60 lb sailfish, and we brought home some other fish which Lagoon's chef expertly prepared for us, no extra charge.

Being an RCI member we were given the choice of an exchange at this Resort.
Mandatory All Inclusive, which, unless you join in & enjoy all the facilities, is quite expensive.
However,we enjoyed the food,accomodation,sun & relaxation.
Used the Spa once, which was very good and reasonable rates and $30 off, from the All Inclusive.
Food was very nice, plenty of choice although, very repetative.
Took the free shuttle boat over to The Sunset Royal, which was also an excellent Resort, but not a patch on the Sunset Lagoon,in my opinion
The Staff were really helpful and friendly.
Monica from VIP Services was wonderful!
If i ever return to Mexico, I would like to stay at this Resort again.
