I stayed at the Sunset Lagoon with my husband and two children ages 8 and 12 for a week in July. We had a great time. The food was above average for Mexico and the service was excellent! Ask for Eduardo at the buffet for dinner, he was wonderful. Eduardo, the server at the pool was excellent too. The kids activities were "pretty good" my children said. The swim up bar was "pretty good" my husband said. Over all we had a great time and would go back there again.

My family had a great time at the Sunset Lagoon Hotel. As promised it was easy to go back and forth between the Sunset Royal, which is on the beach, and the Sunset Lagoon. We especially enjoyed the water taxi. There was food and drink whenever you wanted them at both hotels and the staff are very friendly and helpful. They do try to get you to go to a timeshare presentation, which we did, by offering you free day trips and other activities. Although the presentation took more time than they said it would, and was a hard sell, we found it was worth it because of the the benefits we got out of it. (We didn't buy.) They have activities every day, like Bingo, beach volleyball, dance lessons, and soccer. Also, you can also paint ceramics poolside, which my daughter and I enjoyed. If we were to go back to Cancun, we would definitely stay at the Sunset Lagoon.

I came with my husband, daughter, 10 and son, 6 for an unforgettable beach vacation. The first day was okay. We had a 30 min orientation about the resort. The room given to us was not at all perfect---it had bugs(ants), the toilet backed up 3 times, bedsheets & TV were old & worn-out. And it was close to the pool, that we can hear all the noises outside. Food was so-so, but they gave us no choice---everything was mexican! How bout the people who'd want to eat american food? And the restaurant was not air-conditioned, not so comfortable. There was only one pool in the whole resort. Was expecting the pool to be bigger to accommodate the guests. It was crowded!

The second day was even worse. There was the "presentation " of the sales people which was promised to be 90-minute, but turned out to be 4 hrs. We started 8:30am, ended 12:30pm. My children were already getting angry & bored with the discussion. Eventho, my husband already told the sales rep that we cannot afford it & that we don't go to vacations like this yearly. They won't stop until I lost my temper. I got so furious. They wasted so much of our time!

We had to go to Sunset Royal to enjoy the beach. There was no shower rooms or dressing rooms for guests who wish to change. The hotel lack these facilities.

The service crews were all friendly & accomodating though. No question about this.

I would not recommend this hotel to others. And if ever we come back to Cancun for a vacation, I'll check out the other hotels.

  • Liked — the people were so friendly & accommodating
  • Disliked — the room & the pool, lack some facilities

We "won" our three day stay on an on-line auction, it was all inclusive. We have not "done" AI in a long time, we just wanted to start the vacation relaxed, before going to Cozumel and PDC. (We go to Mexico every year). Since we aren't the typical tourist, it was a different experience, but very nice. We got a blue band, and no one knew what to do with us. We got asked all the time if we were all inclusive, and then our room number was checked. We refused to the time share demo which kind of put a kink in the beginning, but it worked out okay. If I had been considering buying a time share, I wouldn't have after our room location. Very nice room, always clean, but felt like we were in a dungeon, had a great view of the maid cart every day, not a great selling point. The breakfasts were the best, always enjoyed the lunch, went into town on the American buffet night to eat dinner. The grounds were well maintained and the staff was friendly. We had a great start to our vacation.

We bought in 2006 and stayed at Sunset Royale and this year we stayed at the Sunset Lagoon. What was nice was (unlike other time share trips) we didn't get ask one single time to sit in on a presentation, upgrade, etc. We throughly enjoyed the facilities and especially the cruse through the Admiral club around the Isle of Marquares. We went out on the skooby doo (first time ever), kayak, power boat trip and used the free ferrie several times. We would of loved to have the grand kids with us, but we did not. Food was very good and especially all the fresh fruit and friendly service available with every meal.

My only complaint is that the associated golf course was in very poor condition and they no longer had the associate deal with the Hilton golf course. I did play the new Marquares golf course (new development) as it was expensive but one of the best courses I have ever played in 44 years of golfing. It was about 1/2 hour taxi ride but worth one time anyway.

The next trip we might have a slight preference for the Sunset Royale (volley ball daily in the pool) and a few more restaurants, but recreational facilities are located at the lagoon. We also want to take a 24 hour cruise next time. Both locations have their distinct advantages.

  • Liked — Friendly atmosphere, good food and ready access to lagoon
  • Disliked — Golf options
