I was travelling to Cancun on business (so my needs were minimal) and I work for a nonprofit (so, I'm used to budget accommodations). Despite my very modest expectations, however, the NH Krystal still managed to be a profound disappointment.
Here are a few highlights:
* Lost my reservation and insisted on rebooking me at a higher rate even after I gave them printout of the confirmation email they had sent me.
* My room was small, dark and in a building that seemed all but abandoned.
* Although the hotel has a lovely pool area, it was impossible to enjoy it because of (1) the exceedingly loud rap and salsa music that was being blasted through poolside speakers almost constantly; and (2) the nonstop noise of jackhammers, drills and powersaws from the construction site in the middle of the hotel.
* This was particularly regrettable since, even though it sits on a world famous beach, this hotel has no beach access at all. To be clear--you cannot get onto any beach from the NH Krystal.
* Sleeping also proved tricky because of the aforementioned construction noise.
* It was difficult to enter or leave the hotel without being heavily pressured to eat in one of the pricey theme restaurants attached to it.
* Although my original booking had included meals for two people in the price, my wife (who arrived on my last night) was charged nearly $20 for sharing the breakfast buffet with me.
In the end, the dozen people I was meeting with all agreed to cut our meeting short by a day in order to limit our stay in this miserable hotel.
