Stayed at the Omni for 10 nights end of January/ beginning February 2004. Since the reservations were made through Hotwire at a terrific price, thought the room would be the worst in the hotel. What a nice surprise to be upgraded to an ocean view on the 5th floor. Had a gorgeous view of both ocean and lagoon and all of Cancun to the north from the balcony. The much-reported musty smell was absent, except for the telephone, the insides of which were very moldy for some reason.
Used the phone in the bathroom instead, which was not moldy. The room was fine, but the marble floors throughout the hotel are worn, as was the bathroom, and most of the furniture and decor are quite cheap. The hotel does not begin to compare to the glitzy new luxury hotels in Cancun, or even newer hotels in its price range, and is in need of remodeling and updating and refurbishing. Not likely, however, since it is apparently sold out on a regular basis. It is well maintained, and quite clean. Overall, for the deeply discounted price, it was a very good value. Unfortunately, as is the case throughout Cancun, the food and beverage prices are ridiculously inflated and not a good value. On top of that, the food was okay at best, not great. Service ranged from excellent to indifferent. The pool area was the nicest part of the hotel, and from certain parts there were lovely views to the beach. All in all, a nice stay. Bottom line: This is an acceptable older, mid-range hotel for those who can't afford the Marriott, which had rates at 2.5 that of the Omni for the same time period.

My boyfriend and I just returned from the Omni. This was our first trip to Cancun and we loved it! I used Trip Advisor to select the Omni (I often checked reviews twice a day), so I wanted to pass along our personal experiences. First, the food is way above average. Make sure to make a reservation at Da Vinci's early the day before (we took turns getting up at 7 a.m. to reserve...and always got a reservation). The food at La Poloma is also very good (great breakfast buffet, even though I am not a fan of buffets). But...be warned that the service is slow (yet friendly). Second, get up early to reserve an umbrella at the beach. It is definately worth it (and they will bring drinks right to you). Third, the lobby is not that grand and the lobby bar is a little lame, but we went out to the different bars each night (arranged through the hotel), so we didn't mind. Make sure you go to Coco Bongo...it is the most amazing bar/club we have ever been to. Finally, the bus stop is right outside the Omni. It is the greatest form of public transit I have ever come across (only about 6 cents each way) and we never had to wait more than 3 minutes for the bus.

My wife and I just returned on February 23rd from a short week in Cancun, staying at the Omni. We thought the facilities were great. This was our first trip to Mexico - excluding the border towns of TJ and NoGo. We will definately be back and would more than likely stay at the Omni again. The service was excellent with all the staff wearing a smile. The hotel has marble floors throughout and the room was spacious enough with a king size bed and balcony. We did not have a view of the ocean but the lagoon view offered us a sunset every evening. We had no hastles with time shares or anyone else trying to sell us something - at the airport, however, it is a different deal. We have both travelled extensively through much of the US and a trip to Canada and Europe on business and pleasure and the Omni ranks up there with the best. You could pay more for a better hotel but I feel for the money it is a great value. We did not choose the all inclusive option as we like to explore different restaurants and bars but spoke with several persons who took the option and were very happy with their decision. In addition, we took the scuba certification course at Aqua World and found ourselves either in their pool, classroom or diving in the ocean much of the time. We would not have gotten our monies worth at the Omni. Next trip, however... I had read complaints in previous reviews about the musty smell in the hotel. It is my experience that this smell comes from being close to the ocean in high humidity locations. This did not bother my wife nor I as we slept with the slider to the patio open each night. There is one smell, however, that I saw no mention of in any other reveiws. The Omni is located 150 meters east of a sewage treatment plant and if the wind is blowing the right (or wrong) direction, watch out. In fact, the Captains Cove restaurant across the street from the Omni gets more of the stench. There was one time early morning that I got up to close the slider as the smell was too much.
Most people may not even notice the smell. All in all the Omni exceeded my expectations.

We just returned from a week at the Omni Cancun Hotel & Villas. We always take an annual trip to Mexico, but this our first time in Cancun. This was by far the best vacation I have ever taken. Cancun has everything - spectacular turquoise waters, friendly people, endless sights to see and lots of nightlife. We will never visit the Pacific side of Mexico again. The Omni had everything we needed. There?s no need to leave the resort if you don?t want to. There are four pools and a swim up bar ? all crystal clear and clean. The beach was about as perfect as perfect gets ? just beautiful. This was definitely our best all-inclusive experience, which included free use of the tennis courts and fitness room. The food was plentiful and drinks were not watered down - overall the quality was exceptional. When ordering cocktails, ask for premium brands, otherwise they serve the bar shelf liquor. They serve up the best liquor coffees! All restaurants offer a la carte.
Breakfast at the beach side restaurant was always really good - looking out at that incredible view while being served by delightful waiters was great. The room was squeaky clean and spacious with two double size beds, an armoire with a TV and extra drawers for clothes, a table and chairs and a wet bar with mini fridge. The view from our balcony was like a painted picture; it overlooked several pool areas, the beautifully manicured lawns, and I don't even have words to describe the beach, let a lone the breath-taking Caribbean Sea. The Jacuzzi beach bar was great. We tried every restaurant, theme dinners, beach service and room service. All of it was equally wonderful. My favorite was getting everything and anything I wanted brought to me by the cheerful wait staff while lying on my chair soaking up the rays of the Cancun sunshine. I can?t say enough about the friendliness and cheerfulness of the staff, they truly aim to please. The staff had a constant smile on their face and a bounce to their step. This is something that I have never experienced at any other hotel that I have stayed at. Yes, people are friendly, but the staff at the Omni makes you feel like you are special. They are eager to please and always smiling, which is exactly why I will be going back. I loved the royal treatment. Just say ?no gracias? to the timeshare people and they will leave you alone. If I were to criticize anything it would be that the pools were shallow (only about 3 1/2 feet). However the activities that they offered made up for it. I really can't say enough about this wonderful little piece of paradise.

Stayed at the Omni for a week ending February 17th. Hotel is nice, beach is great and staff were all very nice and helpful. Others have mentioned the signing for everything if you are on the all-inclusive plan. It is a pain, but I can understand why they do it. Many who stay here are not on that plan or are members of the Vacation Club (the plan they try to sell you when you check in). This was our third trip to Cancun and we love the Mayan culture and the ocean. We are not party people so we like the family atmosphere at the Omni and the fact that the beach bars close at 6:00 pm. We had a beautiful ocean view room on the 6th floor (they call it the 19th and noone ever told us why they do that). The DaVinci restaurant is very good and the wait staff do a great job. The food is beautifully presented and not large portions.
They do not hesitate to serve you drinks with premium liquor if you are on the AI plan. The tropical drinks were well made and the service on the beach and in the restaurants was adequate (great if the signing could be eliminated). With the modern technology all around one wonders why they don't use scanning of your wrist band to accomplish this task.
The beach is beautiful and there are life guards (not all hotels have them) who are agressive in watching since the undertow is quite severe.
We both had massages in the spa which is very nice and the work-out room charge is included in the AI plan. There are two tennis courts, but we didn't play. There is a bus stop right on the main street in front of the hotel and the bus service is used by everyone. We will return next year.
