Stayed at the Omni for 10 nights end of January/ beginning February 2004. Since the reservations were made through Hotwire at a terrific price, thought the room would be the worst in the hotel. What a nice surprise to be upgraded to an ocean view on the 5th floor. Had a gorgeous view of both ocean and lagoon and all of Cancun to the north from the balcony. The much-reported musty smell was absent, except for the telephone, the insides of which were very moldy for some reason.
Used the phone in the bathroom instead, which was not moldy. The room was fine, but the marble floors throughout the hotel are worn, as was the bathroom, and most of the furniture and decor are quite cheap. The hotel does not begin to compare to the glitzy new luxury hotels in Cancun, or even newer hotels in its price range, and is in need of remodeling and updating and refurbishing. Not likely, however, since it is apparently sold out on a regular basis. It is well maintained, and quite clean. Overall, for the deeply discounted price, it was a very good value. Unfortunately, as is the case throughout Cancun, the food and beverage prices are ridiculously inflated and not a good value. On top of that, the food was okay at best, not great. Service ranged from excellent to indifferent. The pool area was the nicest part of the hotel, and from certain parts there were lovely views to the beach. All in all, a nice stay. Bottom line: This is an acceptable older, mid-range hotel for those who can't afford the Marriott, which had rates at 2.5 that of the Omni for the same time period.
