We went to Cancun for our daughter’s spring break to relax and get some sun. Most of the hotels have lost their beach but the Omni still has a little one with a cute little bar on it. You can’t swim in the ocean because of the waves and the rocks. If you walk down to the Hilton—they had a small patch sand where people were swimming but it would too dangerous for children. My daughter loves swimming pools anyway so she had the best time.
We did not do the all inclusive here because we wanted variety but did eat breakfast everyday which was yummy. The dinner buffet restaurant was passable but let’s face it, inclusives are not gourmet. The Da Vinci restaurant was just ok. One night we went across the street to Captains Cove for dinner. The view of the bay and the sunset was beautiful. The food was good (I love seafood). The best part of dinner was the resident alligator who would swim up beside the tables and beg for scraps—my daughter and all the other kids loved this. Note—this is probably why you would not want to swim in the bay. On other night we went to Harry’s steakhouse, a short bus ride and then we walked back—it was expensive and high-end. The staff there was very nice and the food good. My daughter also loved the shows and on the Friday all the kids got on the stage after and danced.
We did the Chichen Itza trip. Don’t let them fool you—it was a 3 hour bus ride there and 2.5 on the way back. It was fun but a bit much for a 5 yr old.
We got a basic room facing the Bay. It had a nice view and balcony but they face the air conditioner fans which you can here sometimes. I would splurge for the ocean side if this is your main vacation of the year. The rooms were clean and fairly updated and had flat screen tvs. There was a damp smell when we arrived—as is the case with most Caribbean locations—but it diminished during our stay—when you get your own smell in. I would recommend that the hotel get a nicer smelling cleaner—they clean the floors with ammonia which is not that pleasant. The beds were comfortable enough but no luxurious linen or pillow top mattresses.
Tip: join the Omni hotels rewards club before or when you get there. We got wireless internet throughout the whole hotel and morning coffee, newspaper and beverage everyday for free!
The grounds are well kept and there are 3 pools. You have a great view of the ocean from the pools and it is really beautiful. One reviewer mentioned the hot tub and they are correct—kids in it constantly. In my opinion the Hotel should not allow babies with diapers—that just gross. The swim-up bar on the beach is a hot tub too—so go there to get away from the kids.
We thought the staff was very nice and helpful without being obsequious. The hotel had games and contests for the kids but it wasn’t like some hotels that blare “party” music all through the day. We were approached for the time-share but after saying no once—no one bugged us again. We were also there during the Swine Flu scare (we found out later) but not of us got sick.
All I can say is we had a great relaxing time. Just what we needed.
