I am not sure how to describe my experience at the Omni Hotel Cancun since I have very mix feelings about our stay at this hotel.
My partner and I stayed in this hotel for five days in late September, from the moment we arrived at the hotel we had already problems trusting its employees.
Upon arrival David (the concierge) was very polite to ask for my name to check our reservation. Since I am a member of the hotel's loyalty program I was expecting to see my name on his list. Sure he had my name on his roster, he even gave me the room number we had assigned for our stay. To my surprise upon check in at the front desk the room number change (not quite sure why) maybe because this time I made my reservation with Priceline. However, I called ahead of time and requested an upgrade to an ocean view.
During the check in I was asked to pay for the difference in rate upfront and they charged my credit card for the difference upon check in. I thaught it was a bit strange since most hotels would ask you to sign an approval for the difference in rate and charge it to the credit card at the check out. This action by the unfriendly front desk clerk made me feel very unconfortable because I could not tell whether the hotel clerk believe I will not pay for the difference later or it was really the hotel's policy. I have stayed at the Omni Hotels in San Francisco, Dallas and New York and never had this type of problems.
Anyway, the hotel is kept immaculate, the pool grounds are very clean and so beautiful in general, the service is good (not to the Omni standards) but good.
One of my biggest complaints about the service was the inconsistence with the maid service; one day they did not bother to clean the room, i called the front desk to ask why since a part of the benefits of being loyalty member is a turndown service. To my surprise the room did not get clean for the day.
Since I travel very often I know the importance to tip the maids according to the party in your room in this case two adults so I left EVERY DAY the equivalent of $5 in pesos. which is more than the average tip specially in Mexico.
the second day I decided to give the hotel employees another opportunity so we went to the swim up bar which is very cute and nice. Unfortunately, the service was really BAD for a place that was literally empty.
The service in this hotel is very inconsistent some employees are very friendly and do whatever it takes to please their guest, but there are plenty of employees who do not understand the importance of keeping customers happy.
Our third day in Cancun we decided to spend our money in other hotels to our surprise the Hilton had a magnificence service.
The Omni is very far from most of the action in Cancun, so if you decide to stay here make sure the activities in this place meet your expectations. Call ahead to find out what pool activities will be available.
The hotel only have three restaurants therefore, I will not recommend getting all inclusive.
We ate at Pina Colada the food was very basic and average but it is right at the beach so we did not really care. The food in La Paloma is expensive and definitely not worth the money. There are so many great restaurants in Cancun make sure you shop around for a great dinner deal.
Another thing that made me feel very uncomfortable was the series of messages reminding me to leave our valuables in the safe lock(sometimes I received four messages in one day). I understand is a good service, but if it is over done can get a bit scary to the point we did not want to leave our room anymore.
As usual at the Omni Hotels after you stay you will get a survey regarding your stay. I was very honest and fair with my review.
Two days later Patricia the room's manager contacted me via email letting me know how sorry they were about the incident in the front desk. She offered to send me a voucher for upgrade to a suite for next time stay (so far I havent received anything).
Cancun is a very hip and chic place, so elegant and trendy with designer name store and very upscale hotels and restaurants definitely the place to be and to be seen.
I would recommend everybody to go to Cancun, but choose another hotel. There are plenty of beautiful resorts. One day we dedicated our day to check them out. We were very impressed with what we saw in the other hotels, The Casa Magna, the Hilton, The Aqua, Fiesta Americana, and the Hyatt were our favorites.
Do your homework and have a great time in Cancun.
