We stayed at the Imperial Fiesta Club (Casa Maya) the week of May 25th and had a great time. The sign and everything in it still says "Casa Maya". We were nervous at the prospect of staying there because it was contingent on attending a timeshare presentation. As I have used TripAdvisor before to help prepare with good results, I gave it a shot. I'm so glad I did! I was much better prepared for every part of the visit that it went very smoothly. First, I ordered the Brant Entertainment Plus Card ($15 at entertainment-plus.net) which gave us 2 for 1 meals at various restaurants and discounted tours. We also opted for private airport transfers through Brant. It was so nice to bypass all the "timeshare sharks" and go straight to the nice person holding a sign with our name on it. He was waiting for us at the airport, loaded up our luggage, and drove us straight to the Casa Maya in an air-conditioned van. He was friendly and even taught our son some spanish phrases. Through the reviews I had read, I knew to ask for tower 2 (newer rooms) and immediately asked for a mattress pad. We got a great room (one bedroom with an additional pull-down Murphy bed in the living room), but the mattress pad didn't arrive until the next day (and another couple of requests). The bed was so hard that neither my husband nor I got much sleep until the mattress pad was on. We also used the tip we learned to take the bus to Walmart and a taxi back. It was much cheaper and better because we had so many grocery bags, it would have been awful trying to maneuver them on the hot bus. Taking the bus is really the way to go. It's so cheap, and you never have to wait very long before one shows up. Use a map to know which direction you need to go and then go to the bus stop on the correct side. Just go out to the front of the resort and take a left. To go to a place on the beach, you will need to wait at the bus stop on the same side. To go to a place on the lagoon side, you'll need to cross the street at the first crossing and walk a block or so to the bus stop on the opposite side. In either case, it's not very far.
The timeshare presentation wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. The rep fed us a great breakfast (which we dawdled to eat up time) and then handed us over to an agent. We really played up our lack of sleep from not having a mattress pad, and he didn't push when we said "no". He just stood up and shook our hands.
The grounds and rooms are nicely kept. The pool was warm, but the hot tubs weren't consistent in temperature. Usually they were just lukewarm, which we didn't mind because it was so hot. I used the tip about leaving the maid a few dollars (200-300 pesos) each day. She was very accommodating and even did our dishes each day. I never had to ask for extra towels after the first tip.
We got the nice Cancun maps from mapchick.com which helped us to know our way around and even had locations for and tips about restaurants and attractions. We put an asterisk beside each restaurant that was a 2 for 1. Our favorite restaurant was "Lorito Joe's Lobster Shack". Ask for Cornelio--he's the best! We enjoyed the coconut shrimp and lobster (note: 2 for 1 lobster is only on Fridays there). The food and service were excellent--get a table by the lagoon. The sunset is breathtaking! Another restaurant that is a 2 for 1 and more upscaled is "Casa Maguey". Authentic delicious Mexican cuisine, exellent service, and a live mariachi band at 7:30pm. Sit in the front of the restaurant to get access to the band and the sunset! We at at Hard Rock for our son. The food was so-so, but he got a shirt. We also ate at Planet Hollywood, which was better. He got another shirt. The mapchick site also has good info on money exchange rates and info.
We also followed the advice to lay out our towels before 10am on the palapas to ensure getting one. However, we saw where someone left their towels unattended for too long (hours) and the towels were taken up. You have to leave your towel card to get a towel, and the towel place closes at 6pm. I think it opens at 7am. I didn't see any problems with seaweed. The staff does a pretty good job of keeping it cleaned. When it rained, the maids were quick to mop up entry ways and put out towels for folks to wipe their feet on.
The tours that we enjoyed were the Tulum/Xel Ha) combo and Isla Mujeres (Island of Women). Again, tips we learned from this forum helped us to better prepare. We used the discounts given to us by the timeshare rep instead of the EPlus card because they were a little better. However, the tours weren't private and take a little longer with no control over how long you stay at one place, so if you'd rather pay a little more for private tours, go through the Brant card. You'll still get a discount. Usually, the more folks you have, the better the discount. We enjoyed Xel Ha so much that we plan to go back to Cancun and spend more than one day at Xel Ha. It's hard to do everything there in one day. It's all inclusive, so all the food and booze you want. If you book through the Casa Maya, the Tulum will be after Xel Ha that day. So make sure you eat before having to be back on the bus. Neither my husband nor I are big drinkers, so we never get our money's worth in that respect. Tulum was awesome too, and the beach was spectacular. Our son had already changed out of his swim trunks but jumped in anyway because he loved the large waves. If you think you might want to swim there, keep on your swim clothes because there isn't a place to change there.
For Isla Mujeres (Guarrafon Park) tour, we took the Royal Guarrafon option and were so glad we did. It was a little more, but you get a full breakfast, lunch, drinks (alcoholic and non on the boat) towels, lockers, a nice (air-conditioned) boat, and unlimited zip-line (very important for our son). Remember to order your bio-degradable sunscreen through the EPlus card ($10 as of this post). You will need it for both aquatic parks mentioned. We had our airport transfer driver deliver our Brant card and sunscreen when he picked us up at the airport.
All in all, I don't think it could have been a better stay, thanks in large part to all the advice I found on this forum. I hope your vacation is as pleasant and memorable as ours was. Thanks again!!!
