After staying at Dreams for 4 days, my friend and I wanted to extend our vacation a bit. We used Priceline (I'm a big fan) and our bid was accepted by the Hyatt Regency. It was about as convenient as you could get, it is the hotel right next door to Dreams. While it's not all-inclusive, we had already had enough of the cookie-cutter average buffet food & drinks, and were in the mood for a change.

Well, this was a very welcome change. First, the hotel is beautiful and well-maintained. Inside you'll find a circular construction with a very modern feel, and an atrium. It reminded me of a hotel you'd see in South Beach or Los Angeles. Check-in was simple, we arrived shortly after 3pm. While we didn't get an oceanside view, we were very pleased with the room. The shower was heaven and the complimentary toiletries were very nice. We had a King bed with very soft, high-end linens. Housekeeping did a great job, and the room was cleaned early in the day. The only gripe I have was that the elevators were really hot inside, but how much time are you spending in the elevator?

The outside of the hotel was just as impressive, both in style and comfort. There was no beach access, but I didn't miss it. The pool had built-in lounge chairs. The loungers and "shade pods" around the pool were also very comfortable. Closer to the oceanside, there were large beds and cabanas. We didn't order anything from the pool bar, so I can't comment on service.

We only ate at the hotel once, for breakfast at O. While it was on the pricey side for breakfast (It was roughly $32 for two, we didn't try the buffet.), it was worth it. The food was tasty and well-presented.

All in all, I really enjoyed this hotel. It was within a 5-10 minute walk of the main tourist area, and it was quiet and relaxing. It's good for singles and couples. There were a few families with kids, but not many.

“Great location, not so great hotel”

My friend and I came to this hotel mainly because of its location...after falling in love with the Hilton last year but not falling in love with its distance from the party center, we decided to try the Hyatt after looking at the enticing pictures online. We knew the hotel had no beach, so that is not a reason contributing to this bad review...however I still found this hotel to be a major let down...

Although this hotel looks in pictures as though it is going to be pristine with its spa-like decor and picturesque pool scene, this is not what you actually receive when you arrive! The lobby looks as though randomly colored chairs and sofas were simply thrown together in a circle...but still is better looking than the bad disco colored neon lighted, unconditioned and too hot to breathe in elevators....I decided to simply not this bother me as I am just a college student looking for a clean place to stay...

The rooms were clean and cool, and I was very happy to see that the room had a beautiful view of the ocean with a balcony (something I had missed while staying at the Hilton). From the look of things, it was going to be a good stay

My friend and I just got back from a very long trip so we decided to first go down to the pool and get some lunch. We sat down at the pool bar which only had one other guest sitting there at the time, and 3 waiters simply standing around with nothing to do. We waited for about 15 minutes for the waiters to greet us, and when none of them did I motioned one to come over...he throws a menu at us, and leaves for another 30 minutes without even taking our order...when he arrived back for our order he scowled at us like we were bothering him...service I must say I am not used to in Cancun where most of the locals will bend over backwards to make you happy...

Other service issues we came across were the fact the maid never brought us washcloths despite asking her, the front desk, and guest services over and over again, being charged for over 4 items that were never in our mini bar when we arrived, the bell man arguing with me about letting my friend who was a local of Cancun into the hotel without a "fee", and continually being ignored at restaurants and bars around the hotel.

The food was terrible in room service...i think the Oasis might have served better burgers than the ones we were brought at 13.50 a pop...food was standable at the Grill downstairs, yet extremely overpriced...Carlos and Charlie' s gave you more and better food at a better price...

On top of that I had a bag of Senor Frog's souvenirs that was in the room when we left at the beginning of the day, and was mysteriously missing when we got back after the maid had visited...when I made a claim about it the staff simply told me either it was my friend who visited 3 nights prior to that that stole it or I must have shoved it off my own balcony....yeah...okay...

Only great thing about this hotel was the location...simply one or two doors down from most of the night life of Cancun...I wouldn't stay here again however.

Was it a dump? No, but they seriously need an attitude adjustment here at the Hyatt Regency and they are not what they advertise to be...I'll be staying elsewhere next trip...

We stayed at the Hyatt Regency Cancun for $96/night. So, maybe I don't need to complain too much.

The hotel's style is up our alley, very modern and chic. The pool has "chairs" in the water, and they have canopied beds by the pool, too. The pool area was very nice, especially when you compare it to the neighboring NH Krystal pool. All the hotel food we had was good, and frankly, it was the same price as all the restaurants around us. We ate almost every meal there. The guys who worked at the restaurants and the poolside cafes, etc. were great. We had a great view of the ocean on the 12th floor. They upgraded us to the Regency Club level because we asked. And for clubbers, the location is very central. We were there to park it and relax, so we had no interest in bootyshaking. The deli has computers for Internet access. 20 pesos for 15 minutes, which I think is very a good rate.

The moldy smell didn't really go away even when we blasted our AC. The guest services staff didn't seem to understand our initial complaints about it, so we kinda gave up and dealt with it by buying a $5 can of Glade spray. And seemed to be the main thing...there were many employees who did not speak English. Lots of miscommunication, and it was inconvenient. I wouldn't expect everyone in the hotel zone to speak English, just the ones that worked at an American chain like the Hyatt. And that was somewhat invconvenient, but for next time, we will definitely brush up on our Spanish and take a dictionary. But my husband and I did come to the conclusion that we were both more Hawaii than Mexico. Then again, maybe we need to go to a quieter Mexican beach town. Any recommendations?

“Great location for partying”

Hyatt Regency Cancun

Apr 4, 2008

The hotel is average from the outside, but very clean and nice inside. A circular hotel with full interior atrium that impresses. We upgraded to the suite, and utilized a roll-away bed (which was very comfortable). The room had an amazing east and southern view.

A small on-site deli was a bonus and a good Mexican restaurant is across the street. There isn't a beach (hurricane washed it away) but is within walking distance to beaches. You can lay out in chairs or cabanas oceanside.

The staff was top notch (we rec'd apples and champagne on day 3). The hotel almost has a business feel and was very quiet; not much customers about. The hotel seems to appeal to those wanting style, since there is nothing 'latin' in feel; more LA.

The greatest asset or deficit is it's location, depending on your objectives. The hotel is located at the point of the L shaped peninsula, on the north end of a cul-de-sac. The north end is where all of the massive partying occurs. We are talking spring break atmosphere: lots of bars & restaurants within walking distance, lots of foot traffic, and blarring music that other hotel guests said they could hear when trying to sleep (they switched to a room on the north side). So if you want to go out partying and get blotto, you will be within short walking distance. The sounds of crashing waves drowned out the noise and we slept fine. I would recommend the hotel for couples and singles; not so kids. Consider your objectives (party, ruins, diving, beach time, shopping) carefully and plan from there.

The large promenade shopping center is about 1 mile south. The mall is about 2 miles south. Playa del Carmen is about 40 miles south. It has a relaxing atmosphere and more authenic Mexican vibe. We rented a car and didn't have any problems with roads or police (it will take an hour to check in and out).

Very nice experience. Club lounge should be open the whole day and the bath room toiletries should have filled in daily but otherwise brilliant.
