This hotel is an old school style hotel, so if your a snobby traveler who believes that a trip is all about being papmered at your hotel, this place is not for you. It is all inclusive and the food was above average, while the drinks were made strong. Day to day the breakfast buffet was pretty much the same, but the lunch and dinner had variety. The view from our hotel room was AMAZING. The private beach was great because it was never crowded. Also there is a travel agent right at the hotel so everyday we were off doing something different. Parasailing, Mayan ruins, speed boats, swimming with dolphins, etc..

The Maya caribe shared property with Dos Playas. So you are able to use both hotel facilities, pools, restaurants etc..

Folks remember.. Hurricane Dean came through there a couple years ago so some of the other reviews you read are from when Mexico was tring to rebuild. We had no problems that some of the other reviews talked about. Being on a vaction is not about staying at your hotel the whole time.

Myself, my partner and our 18month old son stayed at the Maya Caribe hotel in April this year.

After reading some of the reviews I was a little aprehensive but I found the hotel to be nothing like the negative reviews left.

We stayed in the main building with a view over the garden. Tthe rooms were clean and tidy with 2 double beds and a full door on the bathroom. The maids changed all of our bedding and towels everyday, swept the floor and sprayed nice smelling freshener in the room. You do need to leave the sign on your door requesting your room to be cleaned.

The area outside of the rooms around the pool is a little tired and could do with a lick of paint and some new decking but it was by no means dirty.

There are 5 pools, 2 restaurants and a snack bar on site. We mainly used the Dos Playas restaurant for food and found the meals to be excellent. There was always lots of choice and the fish in batter was delicious. I can understand how it may get a little repetative after2 weeks but we were happy. They even provided us with milk for the baby as and when we asked. The restaurant opened promptly at the times it was supposed too and we never waited more than 5 minutes for a table.

The beach is a little litered but as all the beaches in Cancun are public its not really the responsibility of the hotel.

The staff were polite and friendly with much better English than my Spanish. They offer a free safe behind reception and free airconditioning in the rooms.

Overall I was very pleased with our experience and have recommended the Maya Caribe to my family. You do get what you pay for and if you are able to look past the faded paint and dodgy decking then you will have a great holiday.

  • Liked — The 5 pools and excellent food and weather!
  • Disliked — Some of the outside areas were a little dangerous for my 18 month year old.

Okay so here is the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth. This hotel is a two stars, so don't expect soft cushy beds and chocolates on your pillow. Here is the overal description of this hotel:
1) Cleanliness is next to godliness: They do not believe this. I am not a picky person, at all, but our rooms felt sort of like motel rooms. The sheets did not smell clean and did not feel fresh. I know for a fact that one of the days they did not change the sheets because i had dirtied the sheets with make up from the night before and when i got back to the room (after the maid was done) it was still there. The floors feel kind of yucky. The bathroom has no ventilation or air filters so of course if someone uses it it automatically smells up the room. My toilet broke on the third day (water pressure is non-existant) The ac did work. The bathroom sick had yellow stains and dust on it. I used flip flops on the shower because it just felt dirty. I did not like this at all, thank God half the times when i got to the room i was so drunk that it did not matter.

2)The staff is rude!!! the staff in the restaurants are very rude. The only way you can get treated well is if you tip them. One of the workers actually pulled me to the side and told me that she had noticed i had left food on my plate from lunch earlier and that if i continued to do this that they would open a tab for me (even though i had payed for all inclusive). The waiters do not ask you if you want a drink or pick your plate up until you call them. Not good service at all. The bartender was pretty nice though (again only until you tip them).

3) I had a really bad experience with the tour agency that is inside the reception office. I had payed for a tour to chitchen itza (which was my major reason for going to cancun) only to find out the next morning (at 7:50 am nonetheless) that they had overbooked the trip. So my sister and I were left behind. The lady at the agency apologized and of course i demanded my money back. I was very upset over this because not only did i not get to go on the tour but i had not gone out the night before because i knew i'd have to wake up early. Do not book any tour with any of them!

Some of the good stuff:

1) The view: of course the view is beautiful, you're in cancun, it is that way no matter what hotel you stay in.

2) The activities director (Marco Polo) is pretty nice and tries to keep everyone busy with different activities.

3) The food was decent half the time, nothing great though.

I will def go back to cancun because I fell in love with the place but will not be returning to this hotel at all.... they need to learn how to keep a clean hotel.

we have just got back from the maya caribe and I think I know why some of the reviews are great and others are not so good. the first 2 nights we stayed in their garden bunglelows and the other 8 nights in the main buildings. there realy is a big difference. in the bunglelow the bathroom has swing saloon style doors, with nine inches gap at the bottom and eighteen inches at the top, offering very little privacy for your room-mate. The plug hole was set above the bottom of the sink which left a water stain, and they are unloved. We asked to be moved to the main building. the reception moved us as soon as possible. The main building was much better. we had one room with a sea view, and the other oppersite. We found them of a much better standard. the rooms were clean. the plumbing good, and the bathrooms with real doors. we ate mainly at the dos players and found the food excelent with different choices every day(the fish in batter was better than our local fish and chip shop). We tended to drop a dollar every other round to the barman and had excelent service finishing our meals with either tequila slammers or aniseed liqueur, or both. In the interest of fairness I must confess to speaking spanish, and paying next to nothing for our stay (£524 for four people for 10 nights). if you go say hi to eric the barman, Tomas and Pepe the waiters and veronica the head waiter. I would go back in a flash
