Just came back from Gran Cost Real Resort in Cancun , stayed from Aug 21 to Aug 26 with my husband and 2 kids. We had a good time, the resort was nice , very family oriented environment and the service was great. Satyed there 7 days and have absolutly no complaints , the staff is very friendly, food is great and we were treated like kings. I highly recommend this Hotel and will definitly visit again in the near future.

We just got back from vacationing in Cancun, Mexico. The Gran Costa Real was absolutely fantastic. The staff we met (hola Caesar, Jesus, Mario, Abraham!) were all there to make sure that your stay was one you would never forget. The food was wonderful, the view was magical, and the atmosphere was friendly and relaxed. I cannot say more about the staff and the facilities. As a young couple, we had tons of things to do (we're going back to do the things we didn't have time for) We met really great people there as well....
It was nice to be treated like royalty for a few days! For those of you traveling to Cancun book reservations at the Gran Costa Real...you won't be disappointed!

Stayed at GCR 8/20-24 - Excellent service everywhere (bars, restaurants, maids, other personnel) ..... maybe that is because we tipped everyone, but we were one of the few ..... in fact, I was shocked when I would see others tip .... I sat at lobby bar alot, just to get out of the sun when at the pool, and in the evenings, and it seems like the tip glass in front of where I was sitting was filling up fast, but I would look across the bar at others also sitting there, and their tip glasses were empty ..... a couple of hours of sitting at the bar drinking, and no tips ..... thought that was tacky ..... I know we had excellent service and top shelf brands were always offered to us .... I drink bourbon and water mostly, and I was offered either Beam or Jack Daniels .... I drink scotch on occasion, and was offered J&B. Staff was friendly, and really tried to please us, which they did. My daugher is into fruity drinks, and tried about 20 different ones while there, and thought they were always great .... rum and coke was made with Bacardi. Beach bar was also good, but only went there a couple of times, and both times got bitten, I imagine by mosquitos. When we hung out at the lobby bar and pool, never got bitten.

Restaurants were all good, but we are not big eaters .... ala carte restaurants were very good, all service was very good .... but again, we tip, and rather well .... not sure why, but again, people did not seem to tip in restaurants either, which I just considered tacky and cheap .... I doubt that it was because of their cultures .... maybe those are the people that tend to rant and rave about either poor food or lousey service, huh? The portions were much more than I could ever eat, and we were very satisfied with both the food and portions and service. Mind you, their food is different than what we have in the states, which should be taken into consideration. I feel that their coffee is very strong, so I like 1 part coffee to 3 parts water, and the waiters were eager to please .... another reason to tip them!!

Our room was #223, right next to the elevator, the 24-hour AI club. That is both good and bad .... our room was excellent, and never heard noise, except 2 nights about 4 am when the clubs closed, the young punks that were away from home for the first time in their lives, were still partying and yelling and screaming in the AI club, from about 3-6. All in all, our room was perfect, right over the bar, and we could listen to music (not "head-banger" and stated earlier, mostly 80s-90s type stuff, and we both liked it (we are 39 and 62, and like to laugh and drink and watch people), so we had the perfect spot!! Our first room, #423, had no air, so they moved us the next morning by 11am to #223. The frig in our room was very cold, always stocked with XX beer, water, soda, and always stocked full ..... again, tips for the maid, and little treats (new packaged makeup, hair jewelry, gum), and always put in a little gift bag with her name on them. It was worth it ..... again, excellent ..... when we went to check our our room when we were being moved, the maid was in an inch of water, scrubbing the floor for its new occupants .... can't get much cleaner than that, and that was when we gave her our first tip and treat bag; she really liked that ..... and maybe that's why we got extra towels and extra clean service.

Beach is very clean, but small, and the water doesn't look very inviting. We did not go to Gran Caribe, but I think it used to be Continental Plaza, and we had stayed there our first trip ..... can agree that that is a very nice beach.

As for kids, not too many, but the parents do not watch them, and I blame the idiot parents for that ..... again, the bratty kids would splash us intentionally, and their goofy parents never said a word to them; after the first day, we picked another spot. We suggested that the kids should be supervised at the AI club as we saw some of them throwing food, etc., and I wanted to spank them myself ..... they stopped when I told them I was going to start throwing food at them ..... there is no reason for that type of behavior ..... anyway, the unsupervised kids and the punks at 3-6 am in the AI Club is on our critique of the hotel.

If anyone is still reading this, we would rate the service, bar drinks, cleanliness and food as excellent .... their food is different than we have in the states, but they did a great job, and always try to please.

Finally, we wish to thank Jonathan, Don Ramon, Luz, Neri, the Veronicas, and anyone else who we missed to mention, for helping us to have a great vacation.

Yesterday I returned from a 7 day stay at Grand Costa Real with my 11 year old son. The staff was mostly friendly and helpful, especially the waiters and bar staff. I was very disappointed with the beach - tiny and dirty with tons of boat traffic around it. If you are travelling to Cancun to enjoy the beach... please don't go here. The pool was ok but it was way too crowded (maybe due to the dissmal beach). Lounging around the pool was never relaxing because of the constant entertainment/activities.

The food was ok but the buffet was boring. After 4 days, we started to eat at least one meal each day outside the hotel. The drinks were good and poolside/beachside service was great.

All the above I could have tolerated. But what I found very upsetting was that there was a leak from the air conditioner (at least that's what they said it was) into our bathroom above the toilet. I complained the minute we checked in and the maintenace guy was sent up promptly. The leak recurred within 2 hours. This went on for the ENTIRE 7 days and when I asked to be given another room, I was told that I could not get another beach front room (which is what I paid for). There was dripping water and pooled water in the bathroom the whole time (couldn't use the toilet without getting water on our heads). I am sure that this was not a new leak. Management knew this was a problem and still put us in the room. In addition, there were slow drains in my bathroom as well as the 2 other common bathroom sinks I used in the building.

The leakage problem and management's unwillingness to assign us another beachfront room or offer some other concession was totally unacceptable. I have to say coupled with the other things mentioned above - don't stay here. This is my second trip to Cancun and I will never stay here again. I stayed at another hotel for less that was indeed a 5 star and will go back there next time.

Just returned last week from Costa Real! Me, my husband, 2 sons (10 & 7), my brother (25) and my mom all went. We were EXTREMELY impressed with the hotel, the food, the pool, the service - everything! Some have complained about wearing an armband - hello! How else would they distinguish between the Europian plan, and the All-Inlcusive? I mean, it was an ARM band, for gosh sakes! We were not offended at all!

Yes, the pool does get a little murky mid-day, and occassionally there would be trash floating by. But I tell you this - there were employees working that pool and those grounds ALL THE TIME!! They couldn't have worked HARDER!!! Maybe, we humans need to be a little more RESPONSIBLE with ourselves!

Yes, the beach is small and quaint. We visited the sister - Gran Caribe - one day. Which you must do! The beach there is to DIE for!! However, I would not stay at that hotel. TOO big, spread out. I loved visiting it for a day, and having my more "homey" hotel to return to! And while the waves are fun, at Gran Costa there are no waves, and I didn't have to worry so much about my boys getting sucked under! They enjoyed the swimming area at Gran Costa very very much.

Drinks - omg! Were AWESOME!! Not watered down, or anything! Great waitress service at the pool and beach!! My 10 year old, learned "Strawberry Daiquairi-Virgin" and he thought he was the big man, ordering at the bar!!

Restaurants are great too. The buffet does get old, but just make reservations for the other 3 restaurants! We did - at night, we'd make a reservation at one, for the following night. It was nice to be in air conditioning, and nice to eat in a more formal atmosphere.

We took the pirate ship cruise the last night there. At $63 a person, it was kinda steep for me, but I thought, we'll only be here once, let's go out with a bang! And man - was it SUPERB!!! The drinks (all inclusive) NEVER stopped flowing! (Being tipsy and on a boat in the ocean, makes for hard walking!!) The food they served was so delicious! The "battle" out in the ocean was so much fun - of course my boys talked about it for days! If you can, this is a must-do. If you go - get Carlos for your waiter - the man is a GOD! lol

The rooms, are so nice! They have been newly remodeled. LOVED the shower!! Maybe a slight musty smell (if you just stood and SNIFFED as hard as possible!) but I took a tin candle, and burned it when we'd be in our room, and that was fine! All rooms have new flat screen tv's AND DVD players! We took our kids DVD's - so every afternoon, we'd escape for a siesta, and they'd pop in a movie. Very nice. Also had room service one afternoon - GREAT food, very fast service!

99% of the staff was WONDERFUL. However, there were a few not so friendly (but aren't there EVERY where in the world??). One guy at the front desk one early morning was a ----. And the people in the hotel gift shop were snotty as heck! But I was only in there one time, for 2 seconds, so no big deal.

One thing, there was not near enough bottled water. It was difficult to get one. I think only the bars had them, not any restaurant. I just thought bottled water would be a little more accessible. It was there, just had to look for it. Again, no big deal really.

Overall, we were very pleased with the Gran Costa Real. A trip to the sister hotel is a must. Very wise choice for family on a budget.
