We spent 2 weeks in Cancun just following the Swine Flu scare. The 1st week we stayed at the Royal Mayan and the second at the Royal Islander. We have been to Cancun and stayed at the Royal Resorts many times (we own at the Royal Islander). The thing that makes these resorts special is the service that you get - it just doesn't compare to anything we've experienced in the U.S. Many of the same employees have been there for the past 15 years that we have been going there.
On our trip we had our 3 boys (ages 9, 6, and 3) as well as one set of grandparents. There is something for everyone. There is a great activities staff with programs for both kids and adults. This is not a drop-off program but all of the activities are free except for more expensive crafts like t-shirt painting, mask making, etc. They always have a pinata party for the kids on Sunday. On Friday, they have a Mexican Fair with games and prizes that you can win. The boys met lots of kids through participating in the activities and we'd see those same families all week.
The food is always top-notch at the Royals and we hardly ever leave to eat off-site even though the resort is not all-inclusive. It is priced fairly. At the Royal Islander, there is the Cayo Largo for nicer meals. The only thing that disappointed us there is that they stopped having a breakfast buffet which we always enjoyed. You can still get the buffet at the Royal Caribbean next door. They had a nice Mariachi Night with a great band. The upstairs restaurant, called Paco's Taco's, had a nice selection of more standard Mexican fare (burritos, tacos, enchiladas, etc.) and we ate there a couple of times. We really enjoyed getting take out from Tradewinds at the Royal Caribbean - you can eat fairly inexpensively if you do that some.
The rooms are large (we had a 2-bedroom ground floor oceanfront) and the housekeepers keep them spotless. We love the way they upgraded the former sleeper sofas with Murphy beds that pull out of an entertainment center - these were great for the kids.
There are tons of sightseeing things to do in Cancun. The on-site Thomas More Travel always does a top-notch trip. Now that we have a larger family, that can get expensive so we did some new things. We used Thomas More to hire a private van for us that we had all day. We had another family with us so we had 13 people and this was a great value. We created our own itinerary to Akumal Bay, Yal-Ku lagoon, and Crococun Zoo. It was a great day and we will do this again. We had a great driver and he adhered to our schedule and we could leave things in the bus with him.
The one thing that the resort can't help is that the beach is not very usable right now - it is very rocky since the hurricane. The view is still gorgeous and you can get great photos with the rocks. Cancun is beginning a beach recovery program right now so hopefully that will improve.
We had an excellent vacation as always!!!
