I would rate the Royal Carribbean 7 out of 10. We traded a week with Marriott Vacation Club to stay at the Royal Carribbean. The accomidations were not as nice as Marriott, but were very acceptable. Royal Carribean is between the Royal Islander and Royal Mayan. All three resorts are very similar in quality and features. The only difference we could see is different decor in the rooms and around the resort.
Pros: Full feature condo with daily cleaning service. Use of 4 resorts. Several Restaurants and Bars to choose from. Tradewinds restaurant was excellent. Many daily activities. Onsite car rental. Onsite REASONABLY PRICED grocery store. Very clean rooms. Friendly staff. Location is close but not too close to everything Cancun. Get the guacamole and chips at the pool bar. The best guacamole I have ever had.
Cons: Not being a owner of the time share, we were frequently bothered by your personal concierge to join them for Breakfast or Lunch. High pressure to go to the timeshare presentation. We resisted and were bothered every day. The rooms were very clean and nice but were dated. Lots and lots of stairs and walking. The pool is on the fourth floor, the beach is on the 1st floor and our room was on the 7th.
Piece of advice: DO NOT come in on Saturday. After spending all day flying to Cancun. We spent 2 1/2 hours unexpectedly in Imigration to get into Mexico and this is common on Saturdays because most resorts are Sat to Sat.
Overall our trip to Cancun was very nice. After the long wait in imigration, and being bombarded by taxi drivers. The Royal staff pleasantly greets you and takes your bags to your room while you check in. We spent Sunday and most of Monday lounging by the pool drinking Pina Coladas and relaxing, while dining at night at Tradewinds and going to La Isla mall. Tuesday, we rented a car and ventured down to Playa Del Carmen (45 min) and visited the ruins of El Rey (south hotel zone in Cancun). Be sure to visit Tulum and take advantage of the free snorkeling equipment and sailboats. By Saturday, we were well rested, tanned and more relaxed than we had been all year. We would highly recommend Royal Resorts, just dodge your personal concierge and dont get pulled into the high pressure timeshare presentation. Unless, you want to. I hear that if you hold out long enough you may get a free dinner at the Bandstand.
