Excellent hotel with very friendly and efficient staff. While the hotel was near full, there were no crowds in the common areas or restaurants. We booked our room using Marriott's Sand Dollar promotion which includes a $100 credit for meals and drinks, free breakfast buffet for two and children under 12 eat free with their parents. (You'll likely need to remind the front desk about the kids-eat-free part of the program as they had to adjust for this at check-out.) Get your pool chairs early (before 8am) as umbrellas near the pool are a hot commodity with many people staking their claim with towels before heading to breakfast. We were there with our two boys (ages 10 and 6) and they really enjoyed the large pool and the beach. You'll like the beach in the hotel zone if you prefer larger waves for boogie boards (as my two boys do). The only drawbacks to this property are the beds which are very hard and musty smelling linens. Rooms are somewhat damp due to the high humidity. We requested foam pillows (versus down) which helped with the smell but didn't completely fix the problem. Otherwise, the room was very clean and well kept.
We used Cancun Valet for the ride from the airport. There are many options, but it was nice to have a driver waiting for you with a sign as you exited the airport (especially with all the drivers and booth attendants shouting for your attention).
Reasonable rate, booked over the internet.
We took a side trip using a rental car to Xel-Ha. It's 90 minutes from the hotel but worth the trip. We rented the car from the onsite rental agency which was convenient but pricey. The rate was comparable to Avis and Hertz (over $100 for a compact after refueling). I'm sure there are better deals out there if you take the time to check it out. While expensive, the rental fee was comparable to going with a tour operator but we were able to get there early and be on our own schedule. If you go to Xel-Ha, I recommend the all-inclusive ticket which includes your locker rental, towels, snorkeling equipment, lunch and all of your soft drinks and ice cream. Don't forget to take pool shoes or sandals for walking as the paths are very rough.
We chose Snorkeling Adventures for our snorkeling trip after reading favorable reviews on this and other sites. They were very professional, the food was good and the staff was very courteous. They provide transporation to their own beach site which is set up with tiki-covered tables, hammocks and changing rooms. While there's alot of people (60+), they do a good job of dividing the group into 6 or 8 boats so that everyone is not right on top of one another. You spend about two hours in the water in the morning (about 1/2 to 3/4 mile out), return for lunch and go back in the afternoon for another hour or so. The reef is beautiful with plenty of fish and marine life. While there's also snorkeling at Xel-Ha, it didn't compare to this open water reef snorkeling.
Hope this helps as you plan your trip!
