“Excellent Hotel”

JW Marriott Cancun Resort and Spa

Excellent hotel with very friendly and efficient staff. While the hotel was near full, there were no crowds in the common areas or restaurants. We booked our room using Marriott's Sand Dollar promotion which includes a $100 credit for meals and drinks, free breakfast buffet for two and children under 12 eat free with their parents. (You'll likely need to remind the front desk about the kids-eat-free part of the program as they had to adjust for this at check-out.) Get your pool chairs early (before 8am) as umbrellas near the pool are a hot commodity with many people staking their claim with towels before heading to breakfast. We were there with our two boys (ages 10 and 6) and they really enjoyed the large pool and the beach. You'll like the beach in the hotel zone if you prefer larger waves for boogie boards (as my two boys do). The only drawbacks to this property are the beds which are very hard and musty smelling linens. Rooms are somewhat damp due to the high humidity. We requested foam pillows (versus down) which helped with the smell but didn't completely fix the problem. Otherwise, the room was very clean and well kept.

We used Cancun Valet for the ride from the airport. There are many options, but it was nice to have a driver waiting for you with a sign as you exited the airport (especially with all the drivers and booth attendants shouting for your attention).
Reasonable rate, booked over the internet.

We took a side trip using a rental car to Xel-Ha. It's 90 minutes from the hotel but worth the trip. We rented the car from the onsite rental agency which was convenient but pricey. The rate was comparable to Avis and Hertz (over $100 for a compact after refueling). I'm sure there are better deals out there if you take the time to check it out. While expensive, the rental fee was comparable to going with a tour operator but we were able to get there early and be on our own schedule. If you go to Xel-Ha, I recommend the all-inclusive ticket which includes your locker rental, towels, snorkeling equipment, lunch and all of your soft drinks and ice cream. Don't forget to take pool shoes or sandals for walking as the paths are very rough.

We chose Snorkeling Adventures for our snorkeling trip after reading favorable reviews on this and other sites. They were very professional, the food was good and the staff was very courteous. They provide transporation to their own beach site which is set up with tiki-covered tables, hammocks and changing rooms. While there's alot of people (60+), they do a good job of dividing the group into 6 or 8 boats so that everyone is not right on top of one another. You spend about two hours in the water in the morning (about 1/2 to 3/4 mile out), return for lunch and go back in the afternoon for another hour or so. The reef is beautiful with plenty of fish and marine life. While there's also snorkeling at Xel-Ha, it didn't compare to this open water reef snorkeling.

Hope this helps as you plan your trip!

“Hotel of Excellence”

JW Marriott Cancun Resort and Spa

We just returned from staying at the JW Marriott (7/20-7/28). The Hotel is awesome and the staff very accomodating. The food is excellent, pricy, but well worth the price. Only drawback is that after the 1st day, when I specifically inquired about the "Sea Lice" I was told no problem this time of year. I went into the water and received a rash the very first day that I still carry with me 9 days later. Hotel was 90% occupied, so you had to reserve a chair under the umbrella (Beach or Pool) well before 8 AM. A lot of families with children, not in the Bar pool (pool small there). All in all would return again as the color of the water is truly a site not to miss. Did not even care to venture off the property as it was too beautiful to leave. Did see the ruins at Chichen Itza (full day trip).

“First Rate Hotel”

JW Marriott Cancun Resort and Spa

We spent six nights at the JW Marriott in July. It is a lovely hotel.
We found the service to be excellent as well; we never had any problems. Our room was quiet, well air-conditioned and beautiful. All the rooms have balconies, whereas at the Ritz Carlton and Le Meridien you have to upgrade to get a balcony. We had a gorgeous view of the pools and the water. There is some construction on one of the pools on the north side, so request a room on the south side if you're going there in the next couple of months.

The bathrooms are especially pretty, and come with all the creature comforts: comfy robes, good quality soap and shampoo, separate shower, tub and toilet, etc. Everything is marble, wood, and granite. The maids come in the late morning, and turndown service is in the late afternoon to early evening.

The real standout is the spa. There is a large, beautiful indoor pool that overlooks the lagoon, and at sunset one evening we even had it to ourselves. The spa facilities are first rate. It's free to use the workout room and pools. If you want to use the saunas and steam rooms, it's an extra $10 a day. The pools outside are large enough that you're not on top of kids all the time, which we appreciated, and the infinity-edge pool is especially nice. Tip: Go down first thing in the morning and save your spot if you want an umbrella.

The restaurants were good, though not inexpensive. Be sure to get an E-plus card and the coupons that they give you at the airport because there are coupons for all the JW Marriott restaurants. The only time we didn't get a discount was for the breakfast buffet at Salsa. The buffet is huge, and excellent.

I highly recommend this hotel. We would definitely stay there again.

“Wonderful Couples Getaway”

JW Marriott Cancun Resort and Spa

My husband and I visited Cancun for the first time and couldn't be happier with our experience. It took me forever to decide where to stay as I wanted someplace very nice and very romantic. The JW Marriott was a wondeful hotel --- the room was spectacular and the service was truly first class. We stayed in a Grand Oceanfront Master Suite which I would highly advise. The room was stunning and you could easily hear the ocean waves as you were lying in bed. The service was amazing --- honestly everyone we came in contact was friendly and extremely polite.

We plan to visit Cancun again in the future and would stay at the JW again without question.

“One of the best........”

JW Marriott Cancun Resort and Spa

My wife and I have been going to Mexico for ten years and usually make one or two trips annually. Previously we had always gone to Acapulco, Puerto Vallarta, Mazatlan, Ixtapa, or Los Cabos. We finally went to Cancun and stayed at the J W Marriott. What a grand place. It is the best hotel we have ever stayed at in Mexico and that includes the Acapulco Princess, and the Westin Regina in Los Cabos and Puerto Vallarta. Everything was first rate: excellent service; beautiful clean rooms; and their signature restaurant, the Gustino Italian Beachside Grill is absolutely wonderful. The name belies its upscale ambiance.
This is not a casual restaurant.. don't think "beachside grill." Next to Ristorante CasaNova in Acapulco this is definitely our favorite restaurant in all of Mexico. The J W is not cheap but we believe we got our money's worth. We will definitely go back.
