We just returned from a 5 night stay the JW Marriott Cancún. I spent a lot of time reading reviews on this web site before making my decision and stayed at the JW due to the great reviews. It is in fact a great hotel. I bought the 5 night pacakge through aavacations.com and got a much better rate than through the hotel direct, or any of the other normal sites such as Expedia, Travelocity, etc. although I wish I had paid the extra $18 tax included or so per night offered by aavacations.com for the Premium Ocean View over the Deluxe Ocean View (which is the basic room). The hotel offered me a "special deal" of $30 per night plus tax for the upgrade, which I declined. I felt kind of cheated by their offer knowing what it should really cost. We did have a good view of the ocean, but also of the Marriott Casa Magna next door. The rooms are the same, however. Staying at the JW gives you full access to the Casa Magna next door, making it like 2 hotels in one. The JW pools are awesome, but kind of boring. The Casa Magna pool is not as interesting looking, but the crowd is younger and they play music. We ate at the Argentinian steak house in the Casa Magna and it was fantastic. Prices were not as bad as I had anticipated. By the way, DON'T PASS UP THE LITTLE BAG THEY WILL TRY TO HAND YOU AT THE EXIT OF CUSTOMS AT THE AIRPORT. It has coupons for virtually every restaurant at the JW and Casa Magna, and all other major restaurants and clubs in Cancún. Most are for 15-20% discounts, which is really nice. One odd thing is that I wanted to exchange $10 out of a $20 bill. They refused to give me the $10 change in U.S. currency and made me exchange the whole $20, even though people are changing money litterally all day long and I cannot believe they didn't have 10 U.S. dollars laying around. Our package from aavacations.com included a $100 credit at the spa. I used it for an 80 minute shiatsu massage. The spa is awesome!
Don't pass it up. In summary, if I return to Cancún, unless something better opens (a new Sofitel is under construction and looks impressive) in the meantime, I will definitely stay again at the JW Marriott.
