Jw Marriott ... what's not to like? From check-in to check-out, our service was second to none. The marble floors, walls and columns, fresh flowers throughout the hotel common areas and the general landscaping of the property are absolutely beautiful. The resort is designed so you rarely see any behind the scenes operations, which makes the resort/spa feel even more relaxed. We chose low season and the resort was 40% occupied for our week stay. Never a line until check-out day, when it was pouring rain and the guests were coming in for Labor Day weekend, wandering the common areas and occupying the restaurant, waiting for a weather break. That gave us an idea of how busy the resort might be during high season. We had excellent sunny weather, but muggy and hot ... we drank at least a gallon of water each day. The room balcony is a nice addition to the room at the JW, but keep the door shut or the room gets steamy in just a few minutes. We read about the musty odor and soggy beds, but that can easily be avoided if you use the ample AC and keep the humidity out of the room, at least at the JW. Umbrella shade was first come, first served, so get there early if you plan to hang out at the pool. Many guests reserve their spots and never show up, leaving the premium pool areas unoccupied much of the day. The pool staff could control that better. We would have enjoyed music at the pool, in addition to the sounds of the sea. The beach area has ample papala shade, showers, lounges, food and beverage service and the view is spectacular. We preferred the beach setting to the pool, although the pool is fabulous with the vanishing edge appearing to drop into the sea. If you prefer a "hip" environment, JW is not ideal. The music is lulling in the hotel, but compatible with the "spa resort" environment JW is successfully providing their guests. The spa therapists and staff were kind, helpful and gracious in their demeanor and the spa itself was by far the cleanest and most elegant we had visited. The treatments were well worth the investment of time and cost. The JW's breakfast inclusive package includes a buffet to please everyone from toddler's to the gourmet lover. The smoked fish, chef's special's (usually an italian dish), cook to order items, pastry bar ... endless choices. The salads were spectacular at the Salsa as well as "to go" at the little gift shop. A few non-hotel tips for your Cancun visit ... buy prepaid phone cards in the US, get the necessary code information before you leave because the phone charges would be excessive otherwise. Unless you love the "club" scene and rap music, skip the Bar Leap tour ...
it's misrepresented and starts much later than you are told. The nicest part of the bar leaping tour is the bus ride in the Senior Frog's open bus. The first two bars (Come and Eat and Carlo's and Charlie's) are open air and extremely uncomfortably hot. Best restaurants ... La Brisas (near the Camino Real north of the JW) - mesquite grilled fresh fish, unique appetizers and salads and fabulous service, as well as a good value. Skip the Plantation House - very over-rated. La Dolce Vita on the lagoon, within walking distance from the JW is a nice nearby dinner away from the property - good value and the sunset was terrific.
The small market next door is a quick stop for bottled water and snacks, if you don't want to pay the premium for the mini-bar in the room. Exchange rates were best downtown, but be sure to take your passport to cash a traveler's check, as they won't accept a driver's license for identification. Shopping at the flea markets is a bit stressful ... just say no and enjoy your experience more. The Isla of Mujares is a worthwhile four-hour trip, but do it on your own, rather than a tour. We took the ferry from "Fat Tuesday's" dock area for $15 per person round trip. Upon arrival, rent a golf cart and see the entire island and how the locals live. We saw uniformed school children waiting for their bus, women hanging their laundry on lines and even a Mexican Naval operation hand pushing a navy ship to make a street crossing. Near the turtle habitat is the Casa Rolandi, a small, intimate gourmet hotel ... a lovely stop for lunch and a margarita or two. We missed Tulum and a few other things we planned to do this trip, because the JW was so wonderful you wanted to relax and enjoy all they had to offer. Next trip!
