My sister and I stayed at the Marriot (Club 91 level) using points for 4 days before I met up with my fiancee and ventured farther south to the Riviera Maya to look for a destination wedding location. Between the two of us we have stayed in hundreds of Marriots, both domestically and internationally primarily for business.
To me the point of staying in a Marriot is you know exactly what you're getting. This Marriot, like many others, was decorated in such a neutral style you could have been in Indianapolis had you not looked outside. If you're looking for anything close to an authentic experience keep looking. If you want a few relaxing days being pampered at an excellent spa you're in the right place.
The main draw back of this hotel is that the beach has been completely destroyed by the last hurricane. All the pics from the hotel website/expedia etc. show the beach BEFORE the hurricane. There is at best 20 feet between the sea wall and the pounding surf now. And pound it does. The flag was red all 4 days we were there and according to the few locals we spoke to that is pretty much the norm. Being young enough and desperate for warm water, New Englanders we went in. We had a good time dodging the waves but the waves are big enough that you must dive under them or you get clobbered. Any older person or anyone younger than a teenager would have no chance. Getting in and out is perilous as the washed up coral and rock is hidden from view and the undertow is strong. About 15 feet into the water and I was up to my neck (i'm 5'7"). You also can't see your feet since the water is so churned up from the surf. If you're a beach person this would be a deal breaker.
Thankfully the pool is nice and to boot has a great view of the ocean. It was womb-like in temperature and big enough to accomodate most everyone. Mind you we were there during low season, this place would be tough in high season as there really aren't that many pool chairs. Pool side the service was good in terms of the food and the quickness of service.
The spa was heavenly and is upstairs from the gym which for a hotel gym was excellent. If you have a spa treatment you must shower at the spa. It's heavenly with 8 jets and has a wall of glass (don't worry it's one way glass) that overlooks the beach. There are two soaking tubs one hot and one cold as well as a steam room and sauna. The quality of the spa services (I had the mayan purity facial, oriental massage and the God of corn scrub) was excellent. The God of corn scrub will leave you soft as a baby but beware they really ought to give you something to bite on for this treatment! I've been scrubbed but this was more like being scoured with steel wool. Well worth it if you can grit your teeth.
I was actually surprised when we walked through the Marriot Magna Casa next door to find that it was much more aesthetically pleasing. The lobby was worlds better looking and actually had a little Mexican flavor to the arcitechture.
Tip: What made our few days great was upgrading to the club floor. They put out nibbles of food 3X per day that are filling enough for two women although my guess is most guys would be ready for a real meal by dinner. Breakfast was probably the best. The bar is open all day and is included/unlimited as long as you drink your drinks in the club. Not a bad perk that saved us a little cash. Also, if you are club level you have complimentary access to the spa without having a service booked which for us was worth it even without the free food/booze.
